Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

In response to rapid population growth and new development, the City of Sherwood is reevaluating its transit provision. Working closely with planning staff from the City, six Portland State University Students (the Project Team) gathered information from residents about transit use and desired improvements to existing service.

The Effects Of Cross-Level Conflict: The Moderating Effects Of Conflict Culture On The Group Faultlines - Performance Link, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn

Psychology

We examine how task, relationship, and process conflicts arise from group faultlines. We define group faultlines as hypothetical dividing lines that split a group into subgroups based on the group members' attributes (adapted from Lau & Murnighan, 1998). We further link group conflict to performance, and predict different effects for individual performance, group performance, and employee satisfaction. We also examine the moderating effect of the organizational conflict culture on the relationship between group faultlines and group conflict. We define conflict culture as employees' beliefs about the amount and intensity of a certain type of conflict (i.e. task conflict, relationship conflict, …

Illegal Weapons Traffic In Eastern Europe, Zaur Borov, Stephen R. Bowers

The primary focus of this study is on illegal weapons trade in Romania and the Caucasus region of the former USSR. Illegal weapons traffic in these regions is linked with both organized crime and terrorist activities. The main source of weapons for conflicts in the Caucasus region is corruption in Russian military circles.

In 1994, Oregon residents approved the Death with Dignity Act. Immediate implementation was delayed due to legal battles, however, and it did not go into effect until 1997. The debate over physician assisted suicide remains contentious, and has recently received much attention. This article offers a briefhistoiy of the issue and explanation of current activities related to physician assisted suicide.

Whereas earlier studies in this area focused on the rigidities in the quantity side of the employment relationship, e.g., changes in job tenure and rates of displacement, the authors focus on the price side of the contract - whether wage structures have become more flexible.

Sources Of Inter-State Alignments: Internal Threats And Economic Dependence In The Former Soviet Union, Eric A. Miller

This dissertation develops a framework for understanding the alignment patterns of states of the former Soviet Union (FSU) vis-à-vis Russia. The framework challenges traditional alignment theories, such as balance of power and balance of threat theories, and suggests that these theories provide less accurate predictions of alignment behavior in the FSU than the present framework because of a variety of situational and contextual factors. In particular, the present framework highlights the impact of two variables on alignment patterns, (1) the internal political threats to leaders, and (2) the economic dependence on Russia. Cain slew Abel. “Two men,” says Elie Wiesel, and “one of them became a killer.” Throughout human history, social conflict is ubiquitous. Wars erupt naturally everywhere humans are present. On Sept. 11, 2001, Americans were brutalized by an undeniable statement of hatred that made an indelible impression on not just its thousands of victims, but on the consciousness of the whole world. The terrorist attacks that toppled the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and destroyed part of the Pentagon Building in Washington D.C., defiled symbols of American enterprise and military might, and robbed us of any complacency we felt as a nation immune to attack.

The Vindication Of Hate Violence Victims Via Criminal And Civil Adjudications, Brian Levin

Attempts by victims of hate violence to vindicate their claims through civil courts have a long history in the United States that predates the Civil War. The most notorious Supreme Court decision in American history commenced auspiciously in a St. Louis, Missouri county circuit court in two racially based tort actions on April 6, 1846. Slaves Dred and Harriet Scott petitioned Judge John Crum for permission to sue their owner and for “reasonable liberty” to effectively pursue their case. In an action remarkable for its time, Judge Crum granted the motions and stipulated that neither slave be removed from the …
