A year ago Provenance was in triage, and the executive board of the Society of Georgia Archivists (SGA) had health care power of attorney. A robust journal, fed by the careful attention of outgoing editor Sheryl Vogt, her staff, and the editorial board, was floundering. Transfusions from other leaders were in order, but an extended search for a new attending physician had not been successful. A sense of despair and resignation was felt by many who had invested their lifeblood in the publication. There was talk of letting it die with dignity, but there was a critical need to evaluate …

This Independent Problem Analysis explores the connection between domestic violence and social conflict in Northern Ireland. Specifically, it will review selected literature on domestic violence and examine social and cultural attitudes regarding violence in Northern Ireland. It will then analyze whether and how occurrences of domestic violence in Northern Ireland are affected by broader social conflict.

This analysis will begin with an overview of conflict theories that will be used to show depth of understanding in the conflict discipline and to determine a specific direction for the problem analysis. This will be followed by an exploration of factors that combine …

Discusses the Native American view of Crater Lake, Oregon, as a place of religious significance and the misunderstandings with whites as to its importance to Oregon's Indian tribes. Created some 6,500 years ago by volcanic eruption, Crater Lake has long been seen by Indians as a sacred place. Their hunting, berry gathering, and vision quests in the lake area were tied to their religious view of the lake. Since the 1850's, whites have treated the lake with a lack of understanding of its significance to the Klamath tribes. The National Park Service restricted hunting and charged Indians fees to pass …

In my work with the tribes and First Nations of western North America, I am told the same stories again and again. In intricate and sometimes gruesome detail, I am told how the white world, in its efforts to occupy and claim the western half of the continent over the last two centuries, employed myriad strategies—strategies of conquest—to separate indigenous peoples from their lands. Founded in 1972, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) is a national non-profit organization that works to protect land for its natural, scenic, and recreational values as parks and open space. One way that TPL accomplishes this is through holding property temporarily until the land can be permanently protected by a government agency or a community land trust.

The Effects Of Cross-Level Conflict: The Moderating Effects Of Conflict Culture On The Group Faultlines - Performance Link, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn

Psychology

We examine how task, relationship, and process conflicts arise from group faultlines. We define group faultlines as hypothetical dividing lines that split a group into subgroups based on the group members' attributes (adapted from Lau & Murnighan, 1998). We further link group conflict to performance, and predict different effects for individual performance, group performance, and employee satisfaction. We also examine the moderating effect of the organizational conflict culture on the relationship between group faultlines and group conflict. We define conflict culture as employees' beliefs about the amount and intensity of a certain type of conflict (i.e. task conflict, relationship conflict, …

The primary focus of this study is on illegal weapons trade in Romania and the Caucasus region of the former USSR. Illegal weapons traffic in these regions is linked with both organized crime and terrorist activities. The main source of weapons for conflicts in the Caucasus region is corruption in Russian military circles.

In 1994, Oregon residents approved the Death with Dignity Act. Immediate implementation was delayed due to legal battles, however, and it did not go into effect until 1997. The debate over physician assisted suicide remains contentious, and has recently received much attention. This article offers a briefhistoiy of the issue and explanation of current activities related to physician assisted suicide.

Whereas earlier studies in this area focused on the rigidities in the quantity side of the employment relationship, e.g., changes in job tenure and rates of displacement, the authors focus on the price side of the contract - whether wage structures have become more flexible.
