The Effects Of Enclosure Type On Aggressive Behavior In Captive Chimpanzees, Erica Renee Findley Jan 2002

The Effects Of Enclosure Type On Aggressive Behavior In Captive Chimpanzees, Erica Renee Findley

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Male chimpanzees are known to be aggressively territorial in the wild. It is expected that the limited enclosures of captivity would make them even more aggressive. The Kansas City Zoo was chosen as an ideal venue to explore this assumption because it boasts the largest outdoor enclosure of its kind, and the apes alternate between this and much smaller indoor housing. Quantitative data on crowd size, time of day, temperature, and frequency/intensity/duration of aggressive behaviors were recorded for the alpha male in both enclosures during 300 hours of observation. These data were used to test the following hypotheses: as measured …

Measuring Water Bell-Being: Water Indicators And Indices (Chapter 4), Peter H. Gleick, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Arlene Wong Jan 2002

Measuring Water Bell-Being: Water Indicators And Indices (Chapter 4), Peter H. Gleick, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Arlene Wong

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter reviews methods for assessing the relationship between freshwater resources and human well-being through the development of indicators and indices. It examines single-factor measures like access to clean water, sanitation services, and per capita availability, as well as multifactor indices that integrate economic, environmental, and social variables. Case studies include the Falkenmark Water Stress Index, Basic Human Needs measure, Water Resources Vulnerability Index, and Water Poverty Index. The authors highlight the usefulness of these tools for policy, planning, and public awareness, while emphasizing limitations such as data gaps, changing definitions, scale mismatches, and the difficulty of aggregating diverse measures. …

Water And Space (Water Briefs), Elizabeth L. Chalecki Jan 2002

Water And Space (Water Briefs), Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter explores the discovery, origins, and significance of water beyond Earth. It reviews theories of how Earth obtained its water—ranging from volcanic outgassing to delivery by comets, meteorites, and “cosmic snowballs.” Scientific missions have detected evidence of water or ice on the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter’s moons (notably Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto), as well as in interstellar clouds, distant planetary systems, and even other galaxies via water-vapor megamasers. These findings have implications for future space exploration, as in-situ water could supply life support and fuel, and for astrobiology, since liquid water is a key prerequisite for life as we …

School Age Bullying : The Victim's Point Of View, Jacquelyn L. Miller

Graduate Research Papers

Bullying is a common problem in schools across the world including in the United States. This paper focuses on the problem of bullying from the victim's point of view. Bullying can be defined in a variety of different ways and occurs in a variety of different situations. Victims of bullies suffer from a wide variety of academic, social, behavioral, and emotional problems. Bully prevention and intervention programs can help victims more effectively if they change their orientation from focusing on the …

Male Childhood Sexual Abuse : Do Not Overlook It, Elizabeth Soenen Jan 2002

Male Childhood Sexual Abuse : Do Not Overlook It, Elizabeth Soenen

Graduate Research Papers

Male childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is often unrecognized and under-reported; therefore, its symptoms are often left untreated. The research reveals it is more prevalent than previously thought and is accompanied by a variety of maladaptive symptoms. Clinicians' awareness of these findings, along with self-awareness of their own beliefs about male CSA, is likely to lead to identification of its presence and the opportunity to choose appropriate interventions.

Fossils On The Prairie.Pdf, Chris Laingen Jan 2002

Fossils On The Prairie.Pdf, Chris Laingen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Between 1935 and 1992, the number of farms in the United States decreased from approximately seven million to fewer than two million. This change left a noticeable imprint on the landscape. Working farmsteads have been reduced to idle, desolate buildings, or in some cases there are no buildings left at all. To study this transformation, black and white air photographs from 1950 were compared with 1990 air photographs. Also, plat books and ground checks in four townships in Watonwan County in southwestern Minnesota helped document changes. Farmsteads were abandoned or demolished because people began to find they could not economically …

The Haptic Muller-Lyer Illusion In Sighted And Blind People, Morton Heller, Deneen Brackett, Kathy Wilson, Keiko Yoneyama, Amanda Boyer, Heather Steffen Jan 2002

The Haptic Muller-Lyer Illusion In Sighted And Blind People, Morton Heller, Deneen Brackett, Kathy Wilson, Keiko Yoneyama, Amanda Boyer, Heather Steffen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

We examined the effect of visual experience on the haptic Mu« ller-Lyer illusion. Subjects made size estimates of raised lines by using a sliding haptic ruler. Independent groups of blind- folded-sighted, late-blind, congenitally blind, and low-vision subjects judged the sizes of wings-in and wings-out stimuli, plain lines, and lines with short vertical ends. An illusion was found, since the wings-in stimuli were judged as shorter than the wings-out patterns and all of the other stimuli. Subjects generally underestimated the lengths of lines. In a second experiment we found a nonsignificant difference between length judgments of raised lines as opposed to …

Procrastination, Conscientiousness, Anxiety, And Goals: Exploring The Measurement And Correlates Of Procrastination Among School-Aged Children, Steven Scher, Nicole Osterman Jan 2002

Procrastination, Conscientiousness, Anxiety, And Goals: Exploring The Measurement And Correlates Of Procrastination Among School-Aged Children, Steven Scher, Nicole Osterman

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

We explore the reliability and validity of a self-report measure of procrastination and conscientiousness designed for use with third- to fifth-grade students. The responses of 120 students are compared with teacher and parent ratings of the student. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were also used to examine the structure of the scale. Procrastination and conscientiousness are highly correlated (inversely); evidence suggests that procrastination and conscientiousness are aspects of the same construct. Procrastination and conscientiousness are correlated with the Physiological Anxiety subscale of the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale, and with the Task (Mastery) and Avoidance (Task Aversiveness) subscales of Skaalvik’s …

Undergraduate Student Internships In Natural Resources At Virginia 4-H Educational Centers, Jeff Kirwan, Barry Fox, Barry A. Garst

Publications

Virginia has six 4-H educational centers that provide residential camping experiences for over 22,000 youth per year, the second largest 4-H camping program in the United States. These children may have many learning opportunities in the areas of natural resources and outdoor living skills. Beginning in 1995, the Chesapeake Bay Program in cooperation with the Virginia Division of Soil and Water Conservation provided funds for water quality instructors at each of the 4-H Centers. In 1998, the Virginia Forestry Educational Foundation began supporting a similar internship program for undergraduate students to serve as forestry instructors. Nearly 50 undergraduate students have …

Orwell's Prophecy, David M. White Jan 2002

Orwell's Prophecy, David M. White

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Even though the year 1984 has come and gone without a totalitarian dictatorship having come to power, George Orwell's predictions in 1984 are still hauntingly relevant in today's world, specifically regarding the effects of language on society and the invasion of privacy made possible by advancing technologies. Orwell's frightening dystopian society of Oceana bears a striking resemblance to present-day America. The United States has been set on a course towards Oceana for some time now. It is becoming alarmingly apparent that the tragic events of September 11 th may well prove to be the final catalyst needed to tum America …

A Place For Children? Children In Families Living In Emergency Accommodation: The Perspectives Of Children, Parents And Professionals, Ann Marie Halpenny, Anna Fiona Keogh, Robbie Gilligan Jan 2002

A Place For Children? Children In Families Living In Emergency Accommodation: The Perspectives Of Children, Parents And Professionals, Ann Marie Halpenny, Anna Fiona Keogh, Robbie Gilligan

Reports

Homelessness affects the lives of an increasing number of children in Dublin. Research by Focus Ireland indicated that 1,262 children were living with their parent(s) in Bed and Breakfast (B&B) emergency accommodation in 1999 (Houghton & Hickey, 2000). More recent figures from the Northern Area Health Board (NAHB) Homeless Service show that 20% of first time referrals to emergency accommodation in the past year were families with 827 children. Much of the available information on these children’s well-being comes from studies on the health care needs and access to health care services of families living in emergency accommodation (Smith, McGee, …

The Use Of Slogans In Political Rhetoric, Cail Newsome Jan 2002

The Use Of Slogans In Political Rhetoric, Cail Newsome

The Corinthian

This paper focuses on the use of slogans within political rhetoric. The research focuses on the phrasing of the slogan, the connotation and association of the words used within them, and the motivational quality of slogans. Simply stated, this paper is a look into how and why political slogans are successful. The research is directed away from political slogans that are specifically created and used for campaign purposes and instead looks at the political slogans that are less vote-getting in orientation and have been used to shape public opinion or motivate a public action.

The Corinthian

This study attempts to understand the differences in activity among an emergent television/Internet audience. The Internet has provided a new entertainment opportunity for producers of television programming. Those television viewers who have also reached out to their favorite television show websites have resulted in a new audience. Examining the programming genre of reality television, two constructs were developed and a written survey administered to a convenience sample of college freshmen. The construct "dual users" was created to examine the television audience that also visits television programming websites. Single users (those that only watch the television show) were compared to the …

Vegetarianism And Virtue: Does Consequentialism Demand Too Little?, Nathan Nobis Jan 2002

Vegetarianism And Virtue: Does Consequentialism Demand Too Little?, Nathan Nobis

Human Health Collection

The article discusses the moral aspects of vegetarianism. This will make vegetarians more compassionate and caring for animals and will result in better health and less finances. The virtue theory or the vegetarian justifying principle connotes that one should not support even symbolically bad practices to animals when good alternatives are readily available. Becoming a vegetarian is a way of attesting to the depth and sincerity of one's belief in the wrongness of how we treat animals and its consequence to humans. Consequentialism does not demand too little because it requires that one conforms his behavior to the vegetarian justifying …

Convergence Of Complex Cognitive Abilities In Cetaceans And Primates, Lori Marino Jan 2002

Convergence Of Complex Cognitive Abilities In Cetaceans And Primates, Lori Marino

Sentience Collection

What examples of convergence in higher-level complex cognitive characteristics exist in the animal kingdom? In this paper I will provide evidence that convergent intelligence has occurred in two distantly related mammalian taxa. One of these is the order Cetacea (dolphins, whales and porpoises) and the other is our own order Primates, and in particular the suborder anthropoid primates (monkeys, apes, and humans). Despite a deep evolutionary divergence, adaptation to physically dissimilar environments, and very different neuroanatomical organization, some primates and cetaceans show striking convergence in social behavior, artificial ‘language’ comprehension, and self-recognition ability. Taken together, these findings have important implications …
