Anna Marie Smith On Welfare Reform And Sexual Regulation, Richard Blum Jan 2002

Anna Marie Smith On Welfare Reform And Sexual Regulation, Richard Blum

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

"Why is 'welfare reform' a queer issue?" That question was posed to a gathering of New York-based social services and LGBTQ advocates a couple of years ago at a meeting that launched the Queer Economic Justice Network (QEJN). Since then, QEJN has reached out to mainstream LGBTQ organizations to help them recognize the myriad ways that "welfare reform" has harmed poor queers.

The Perils Of Queering The Curriculum, David William Foster Jan 2002

The Perils Of Queering The Curriculum, David William Foster

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

A student came into my office the other day who provided a direct challenge to my efforts to queer the curriculum. Let me say first that, although I respect the value of teaching courses on topics that are presented as queer-marked — indeed, I teach graduate courses in English on Queer Theory and Queer Filmmaking - my ideological preference in the courses I teach in both Spanish and Portuguese is to engage in queer readings across the canon, toward demonstrating that 1) sexual/gender identity is problematic in all texts, and any facile or obvious attribution is likely to be the …

Violence, Mourning, Politics, Judith Butler Jan 2002

Violence, Mourning, Politics, Judith Butler

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

I’d like to speak to you this evening on the matter of politics and, specifically, how the struggles of gender and sexual minorities might offer a perspective on current issues that are before us, questions of mourning and violence, which we have to deal with as part of an international community. I'd like to start, and to end, with the question of the human, of who counts as the human, and the related question of whose lives count as lives, and with a question that has preoccupied many of us for years: what makes for a grievable life. I believe …

The Business Plan: A Road Map To Success, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Jan 2002

The Business Plan: A Road Map To Success, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

The business plan is like a road map. The process of writing a business plan helps the business owner make good decisions and reach his or her goal or destination. The number one reason businesses fail is lack of planning! Instead of making mistakes on paper, business owners too often make them with real money and real customers. That is why many, but not all, business funding institutions and agencies require business plans and may be reluctant to fund business start-ups that cannot provide a well-developed plan.

No. 10: Criminal Tendencies: Immigrants And Illegality In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams Jan 2002

No. 10: Criminal Tendencies: Immigrants And Illegality In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Vincent Williams

Southern African Migration Programme

South Africans believe that immigrants are largely responsible for the post-1994 crime wave in the country. In a national survey of South African citizens conducted recently by the Southern African Migration Project (SAMP), for example, respondents were asked what, if anything, they had to fear about people from neighbouring countries (McDonald 2000: 209). Almost half the population (48%) felt that migrants were a “criminal threat” (compared to 37% who thought they were a threat to jobs and the economy, and 29% who thought they were a health threat). The simplistic, and largely unsubstantiated, association of foreignness with criminality, job-stealing and …

Life Under The Third Reich As Seen Through The Eyes Of Women Who Lived It, Amanda Stout Jan 2002

Life Under The Third Reich As Seen Through The Eyes Of Women Who Lived It, Amanda Stout

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

History is a collection of personal experiences. Much ofthe information amassed about the Third Reich comes from records and personal testimony, whether in journals or interviews. It's unfortunate that time must move forward and people pass on, taking their personal histories with them. Testimonies coming from those who lived under the Third Reich give the younger generations an interesting history lesson as well as preserve those personal narratives for further study. For this thesis, I interviewed two women who not only lived through the Second World War but grew up in the Third Reich society. Additionally, I used Alison Owings' …

Reactive Attachment Disorder : Diagnosis, Assessment, And Treatment, Kimberly A. Rees Jan 2002

Reactive Attachment Disorder : Diagnosis, Assessment, And Treatment, Kimberly A. Rees

Graduate Research Papers

In recent years, there has been an increasing trend toward the use of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) as a diagnosis to describe myriad problem behaviors and disturbed interactions between infants, young children and their caregivers. There is considerable disagreement about what RAD actually entails and, in particular, what types of assessments and treatment interventions to use with affected children and families (Hanson & Spratt, 2000). This paper is intended to clarify what the current research states about Reactive Attachment Disorder. It includes the definitions and diagnosis, importance of attachment, biological components, risk factors later in life, assessment, and treatment available …

A Positive Political Model Of Supreme Court Economic Decisions, Tony Caporale, Harold Winter Jan 2002

A Positive Political Model Of Supreme Court Economic Decisions, Tony Caporale, Harold Winter

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We develop a positive political model of the U.S. Supreme Court. Looking at the Court's economic cases for the period 1953-1993, we find a significant larger fraction of conservative decisions under Republican presidents and more conservative leadership of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. Conservative decisions are also found to be positively correlated with the fraction of the Court appointed by Republican presidents and the rate of price inflation. We argue that our findings cast serious doubt on the common view of the Supreme Court as a completely independent, apolitical institution.
