You Bet They're Having Fun! Older Americans And Casino Gambling, Janet Hope, Linda Havir Jan 2002

You Bet They're Having Fun! Older Americans And Casino Gambling, Janet Hope, Linda Havir

Sociology Faculty Publications

This exploratory two-stage study of a small sample of older Minnesotans finds no evidence that casino gambling activities threaten their well-being. For most respondents, the social benefits were the most salient parts of this activity and they were well aware of the danger signs of problem behaviors. Social exchange theory explains why they visit casinos and how much they spend. The life course perspective explains their decisions based on past behaviors and is consistent with how they have lived their lives. We suggest that age norms determine the public's perceptions that casino gambling is problematic for older people. Results are …

A Vote Cast; A Vote Counted: Quantifying Voting Rights Through Proportional Representation In Congressional Elections, Michael Mccann Jan 2002

A Vote Cast; A Vote Counted: Quantifying Voting Rights Through Proportional Representation In Congressional Elections, Michael Mccann

Law Faculty Scholarship

The current winner-take-all or first-past-the-post system of voting promotes an inefficient market where votes are often wasted. In this system, representatives are selected from a single district in which the candidate with the plurality of votes gains victory. Candidates who appear non-generic can rarely, if ever, expect to receive the most votes in this system. This phenomenon is especially apparent when African-Americans and other minority groups seek elected office. In part because white voters constitute at least a plurality of voters in every state except Hawaii, minorities in the forty-nine other states have had historically little success in gaining election …

Recent Trends In Global And Irish Tourism, Kevin Griffin Jan 2002

Recent Trends In Global And Irish Tourism, Kevin Griffin

Articles

2001 will long be remembered as one of the most difficult years for tourism in Ireland. The outbreak of Food and Mouth disease in the first half of the year was seen as a major blow to the industry, with many businesses suffering from the resultant restrictions on travel. These problems were further increased by the global effects of the economic slow-down in the USA. As the sector began to recover and was shaping up for a healthy Autumn, the terrorist attacks of September 11 devastated the industry globally, with knock–on effects which are only now beginning to be assessed. …

On The Evolution Of Depression, Mike W. Martin Jan 2002

On The Evolution Of Depression, Mike W. Martin

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

In "Depression as a Mind-Body Problem," Walter Glannon outlines a psychosocial-physiological explanation of depression as a psychological response to chronic stress—today, especially social stress—in which cortisol imbalances disrupt neurotransmitters. Accordingly, treatment for depression should combine psychopharmacology and psychotherapy—a valuable reminder in light of the current restrictions on funding for health care (Hobson and Leonard 2001). My comments focus, however, on Glannon's objections to evolutionary theorists who explain our capacity for depression as adaptive to the natural and social environment. His objections are implausible because he fails to distinguish depression as a mood and a disorder.

Wu Wei In Chuang Tzu As Life-Systematic, Kuang-Ming Wu Jan 2002

Wu Wei In Chuang Tzu As Life-Systematic, Kuang-Ming Wu

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Wu wei (non-doing) in Chuang Tzu is expressed in story-bits reflecting life-slices. They are lifesystematic,

not random, not having a system. One; Chuang Tzu is a dragonfly over the pond of

life, dotting the water of daily ongoing without dotting it. Two; the dotting is dot-sayings that

yam life's concrete bits into story-coherence. Three; Chuang Tzu dots and struts around to let

others say, and life-coherenc.e appears. FoUl'; life-coherence is a life-family of concrete bits, a

thread of many life-fibres twisted together. Five; Chu Hsi and Chuang Tzu have dot-sayings

that draw readers into making systems of their own to …

The Politics Of The Ngo Movement In Northeast Thailand, Somchai Phatharathananunt Jan 2002

The Politics Of The Ngo Movement In Northeast Thailand, Somchai Phatharathananunt

Asian Review

This paper examines the struggle of the NGO movement in northeast Thailand (Isan) during the 1980s and 1990s. The paper begins with analysis of the differences between the NGOs in the 1970s and in the post-1970s era. This analysis gives the background to the debate within Isan NGOs between the political economists, who engaged in political mobilization, and the community culturalists, who refrained from any kind of political mobilization. In the 1990s, the differences between the two sides were resolved in the course of struggle.

Comprehensive Community Initiatives (Cci): A Comparison Of Community Implementation Plans, Teri L. Perkins Jan 2002

Comprehensive Community Initiatives (Cci): A Comparison Of Community Implementation Plans, Teri L. Perkins

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

People in crisis often require multiple community services. A homeless person may need medical health care and behavioral health care, along with shelter. A woman who is the victim of domestic abuse may need help with childcare, transportation, food, and emergency housing. Comprehensive community initiatives (CCIs) attempt to provide this interrelated range of community services.

CCIs developed as a part of community building efforts in the late 1980’s (Kubisch, 1996; Stagner and Duran, 1997). “Comprehensive” can either refer to an initiative that incorporates social, educational, cultural, physical, and economic development in a community or to an initiative whose purpose is …

Developing Linguistic Literacy: Perspectives From Corpus Linguistics And Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Douglas Biber, Randi Reppen, Susan M. Conrad Jan 2002

Developing Linguistic Literacy: Perspectives From Corpus Linguistics And Multi-Dimensional Analysis, Douglas Biber, Randi Reppen, Susan M. Conrad

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In their conceptual framework for linguistic literacy development, Ravid & Tolchinsky synthesize research studies from several perspectives. One of these is corpus-based research, which has been used for several large-scale research studies of spoken and written registers over the past 20 years. In this approach, a large, principled collection of natural texts (a 'corpus') is analysed using computational and interactive techniques, to identify the salient linguistic characteristics of each register or text variety. Three characteristics of corpus-based analysis are particularly important (see Biber, Conrad & Reppen 1998):(1) a special concern for the representativeness of the text sample being analysed, and …

Research Proposal: Relationship Between Pay And Job Performance, Jessie M. Bell Jan 2002

Research Proposal: Relationship Between Pay And Job Performance, Jessie M. Bell

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

There is no argument that employee morale has an effect on an employees production and job performance. I want to see if pay ties in with employee morale and research whether there is a relationship between pay and job performance. I find myself often saying things like "They don't pay me for this" in my workplace which leads me to believe that if people were paid more they would be willing to do more. Job satisfaction is so important because it is one of the three most important predictors of overall well- being (Judge & Watanabe, 2000). Sousa-Poza (2000) states …

Research Proposal: Teacher Feedback And Student Grade Improvement, Sara Sullivan, Sara Sullivan Jan 2002

Research Proposal: Teacher Feedback And Student Grade Improvement, Sara Sullivan, Sara Sullivan

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

I am proposing a research project to discover whether there is a significant grade improvement in students receiving positive feedback from teachers on tests, assignments, or papers, as opposed to students receiving negative feedback or no feedback at all. I decided to look into this question because I have read several studies pertaining to student motivation and achievement and am interested to know how much, specifically teacher feedback, will improve student grades throughout the course of a semester. The studies I have reviewed discuss student motivation and achievement and indicate students’ perceptions of how these behaviors are likely to occur.

Research Proposal: Is Corporal Punishment As Effective As Positive Reinforcement?, Aaron Deakin Jan 2002

Research Proposal: Is Corporal Punishment As Effective As Positive Reinforcement?, Aaron Deakin

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Research today has revealed various methods for behavior change and behavior change strategies. A question that leaves many researchers turning their heads is, what is the most effective and efficient way to change aggressive delinquent and violent behaviors. Is punishment as effective as positive reinforcement? This is interesting because in an image concerned society, people may be more apt to model behaviors that are rewarded positively rather than to behave appropriately from being punished. My hypothesis is that positive reinforcement will be more effective than corporal punishment. “Most family and pediatricians favor the use of corporal punishment and pediatricians agree …

Research Proposal: The Effect Of Income On The Probability Of Divorce, Johanna Bisges Jan 2002

Research Proposal: The Effect Of Income On The Probability Of Divorce, Johanna Bisges

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The research question I am proposing is whether the income of a couple has an effect on their probability of getting a divorce, especially among couples in the lower class or upper class. This is of great interest to me because lately I have heard of several divorces of upper class married couples, and I wondered if the reason that they were getting a divorce was related at all to the couples’ income. Researchers examining the economic contest of American families living in the 1990’s noticed several interesting trends (White & Rogers, 2000). White and Rogers (2000:13) found “significant positive …

Underachievement And Movitation : Why Children Underachieve And The School Counselor's Role In Helping Students, Sarah M. Kakacek Jan 2002

Underachievement And Movitation : Why Children Underachieve And The School Counselor's Role In Helping Students, Sarah M. Kakacek

Graduate Research Papers

Underachievement and lack of motivation are two matters of concern that are significantly affecting elementary children in North American classrooms (Wigfield & Eccles, 2002). School counselors have responsibilities to encourage and foster growth in children's learning through the use of combined techniques such as self-monitoring and self-evaluation. In addition, counselors are attempting to understand and further explore channels that may stifle a child's progress including, but not limited to: the classroom environment, the child's belief system, internal needs and cognitions, the child's sense of autonomy as well as competency, and basic needs of belonging and fun.

In aiding the underachieved …

Language is a powerful tool of which metaphorical language is one compelling feature that the therapist has at his or her disposal. Through the use of metaphor, therapeutic communication is enhanced and abstract ideas become more tangible. This paper begins with a dictionary definition of metaphor and how some of the experts in the field have defined it. Several types of metaphor will be described along with some practical examples for each type. Metaphor can be used in various counseling modalities. Four modalities will be described along with why metaphors are useful. Finally the paper will conclude with the process …

Issues Impacting The Quality Of Mental Health In Older Adults, Rachel I. Pettit Jan 2002

Issues Impacting The Quality Of Mental Health In Older Adults, Rachel I. Pettit

Graduate Research Papers

Older adults are confronted with a variety of developmental and unexpected issues that can impair or strengthen their mental health. Affective and anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and suicide are some of the mental health issues when older adults experience difficulty with the aging process. On the other hand, the quality of their physical and mental health, their support system, the resolution of grief and loss issues, and the strength of their spirituality assist older adults in recreating meaning. Thus, they are able to live their senior years with purpose. These issues will be addressed and recommendations will be described with …
