Using Reasons For Living To Connect To American Indian Healing Traditions, Thomas L. Crofoot Graham
Using Reasons For Living To Connect To American Indian Healing Traditions, Thomas L. Crofoot Graham
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Responding to high rates of suicide for American Indian youth, helping professionals often struggle to connect healing traditions from American Indian cultures to tools from European psychology. The differences between American Indian healing and European therapy can be vast. Finding connections or building bridges between these two perspectives may be more difficult than it appears (Duran & Duran, 1995). One method to bring together these worldviews is to use the Reasons for Living Questionnaire (RFL, Linehan, Goldstein, Nielsen, & Chiles, 1983); the Reasons for Living Inventory for Adolescents (RFL-A, Osman, Downs, Kopper, Barios, Besett, Linehan, Baker, & Osman, 1998), or …
Envisioning A Healthy Future: A Re-Becoming Of Native American Men, Paul Rock Krech
Envisioning A Healthy Future: A Re-Becoming Of Native American Men, Paul Rock Krech
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Native American men have historically been important to their communities, each having a specific function in the perpetuation of cultural norms and practices. Oral tradition and communal experiential activity were pathways of maintaining a connection with others and in regenerating culture. In contrast, the modern dominant culture values and emphasizes individuation as an indicator of psychosocial growth. This influence seems to have hindered Indigenous people/men in maintaining a sense of connection with the community. Survival for Indigenous men during the establishment of encroaching nations has often occurred through relinquishment of a part of 'self' psychically. Aboriginal men report experiencing hopelessness …
E.L.D.E.R.S. Gathering For Native American Youth: Continuing Native American Traditions And Curbing Substance Abuse In Native American Youth, Warren Skye
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
E.L.D.E.R.S. Gathering for Native American youth: continuing Native American traditions and curbing substance abuse in Native American youth describes the efforts of Native American Elders, traditionalists, and non-native volunteers interested in preserving the culture and traditions of the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse), also known as the Iroquois. This event is held every summer at the Ganondagan Historical site located near Victor, in upstate New York. The purpose of this week long gathering is to bring together Native American youth who are interested in learning more about their traditional ways with Native American Elders who practice these traditions. Much of …
Public Voices And Public Policy: Changing The Societal Discourse On "Welfare", Vicki Lens
Public Voices And Public Policy: Changing The Societal Discourse On "Welfare", Vicki Lens
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Much of the public discourse on welfare reform is subjective and value laden, a composite of socially constructed stories and myths that support the dominant ideology. This article reports on a study that examines the language used by government officials, poverty experts, advocates and others to discuss welfare reform. Statements made about welfare reform were extracted from the Washington Post and the New York Times and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Dissecting the public language of welfare provides insight into how prevailing ideologies are communicated and reinforced, and how they can be changed.

Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts
Understanding Of Emotions And Emotion Regulation In Adolescent Females With Conduct Problems: A Qualitative Analysis, Lynne M. Kostiuk, Gregory T. Fouts
The Qualitative Report
Adolescent girls with conduct problems were interviewed regarding their (a) understanding of positive and negative emotions, (b) parental context of experiencing emotions, (c) ways of regulating emotions, (d) success in emotion regulation, and (e) use of alternative strategies in dealing with emotions. It was found that the girls have relatively little understanding of their negative internal states and/or are unable to express them to others, especially to fathers. They have few successful strategies for regulating negative emotions in themselves and others and are unaware of alternative strategies. This dysregulatory pattern likely prevents them from learning more appropriate ways of expressing …
Use Of Focus Groups In Survey Item Development, Sylvia C. Nassar-Mcmillan, L. Dianne Borders
Use Of Focus Groups In Survey Item Development, Sylvia C. Nassar-Mcmillan, L. Dianne Borders
The Qualitative Report
Focus groups are rapidly gaining popularity as a field research tool. This technique can be particularly effective in survey item development, as illustrated here via development of the Volunteer Work Behaviors Questionnaire. The steps involved in this process, ranging from item generation to finalizing logistics, are outlined. Implications for further research are proposed.
Bias In Qualitative Research: Voices From An Online Classroom, Beloo Mehra
Bias In Qualitative Research: Voices From An Online Classroom, Beloo Mehra
The Qualitative Report
The issue of bias in qualitative research is an important one, and demands special attention and discussion in any qualitative research methods class. This reflective paper, written in the tradition of teacher-research, presents an analysis of how my students and I, working in an online classroom environment, learn together about the role researcher self and subjectivity play in designing and conducting qualitative research. While researcher bias and subjectivity are commonly understood as inevitable and important by most qualitative researchers, the beginners in qualitative research classes are generally not very comfortable with the idea of research that is not value-neutral. A …
Redefining Our Understanding Of Narrative, Amardo Rodriguez
Redefining Our Understanding Of Narrative, Amardo Rodriguez
The Qualitative Report
This paper is born out of my concern about the increasing use of narrative as merely a different methodology. I argue that narrative as methodology ultimately depoliticizes the potentiality of narratives. Narrative simply becomes one of the many methods that belong to qualitative inquiry. We generally discuss narrative as story-telling. We also focus on doing good narrative analysis. In this paper I recast in narrative in language of cosmology so as to highlight the libratory potentiality that narrative affords persons who strive for a new and different world. I discuss narrative in terms of being in the world. I also …
What's Rapport Got To Do With It? The Practical Accomplishment Of Fieldwork Relations Between Young Female Researchers And Socially Marginalised Older Men, Cherry Russell, Denise Touchard, Maree Porter
What's Rapport Got To Do With It? The Practical Accomplishment Of Fieldwork Relations Between Young Female Researchers And Socially Marginalised Older Men, Cherry Russell, Denise Touchard, Maree Porter
The Qualitative Report
Drawing on field notes, interview transcripts and personal reflections, this paper describes an ethnographic research project as a practical accomplishment. The project has employed two young female fieldworkers in negotiating and documenting the social worlds of socially disadvantaged and marginalised older men in inner city Sydney, Australia. We provide a rich description of the various processes involved in this kind of research such as gaining entry, recruiting participants, obtaining consent and conducting interviews. Our analytical and interpretive focus is on the social relationships of fieldwork and the problematic role of rapport as the ideal (or only) basis for such relationships. …
"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd
"Do You Have Any Books On..." An Examination Of Public Library Holdings, Cynthia Bassett, John M. Budd
Faculty Publications
Public librarians have long debated the question of whether quality or popularity should drive collection decisions. A survey of the selected holdings of twenty medium-sized public libraries indicates that both quality and popularity may be determining factors in whether to acquire particular titles. Furthermore, the study suggests that the existence and content of reviews may also influence the likelihood of libraries to select particular titles, as may the selectors' perception of the diversity of their community.
Wrestling And Popular Culture, Dalbir S. Sehmby
Wrestling And Popular Culture, Dalbir S. Sehmby
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Wrestling and Popular Culture" Dalbir S. Sehmby investigates a phenomenon of television culture. Wrestling has been for a long time now a main feature of television with a sizable audience. However, scholars in popular culture, audience studies, or television studies have paid little attention to this phenomenon and Dalbir argues that the study of wrestling in popular culture ought to be of interest to scholars of culture. In his discussion, Dalbir addresses notions of high art versus low art along with notions of high television versus low television. He continues with a discussion of the recent history …

Three Approaches From Europe: Waldorf, Montessori, And Reggio Emilia, Carolyn P. Edwards
Three Approaches From Europe: Waldorf, Montessori, And Reggio Emilia, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Waldorf, Montessori, and Reggio Emilia are three progressive approaches to early childhood education that appear to be growing in influence in North America and to have many points in common. This article provides a brief comparative introduction and highlights several key areas of similarity and contrast. All three approaches represent an explicit idealism and turn away from war and violence toward peace and reconstruction. They are built on coherent visions of how to improve human society by helping children realize their full potential as intelligent, creative, whole persons. In each approach, children are viewed as active authors of their own …
Night Moves: A Qualitative Investigation Of Street-Level Sex Work, Rochelle L. Dalla
Night Moves: A Qualitative Investigation Of Street-Level Sex Work, Rochelle L. Dalla
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The subculture of street-level sex work including the social environment, drug use and abuse, and violence was examined. Personal interviews were conducted with 43 women involved in streetwalking prostitution. Data were analyzed using Phenomenological Descriptive Analysis (Colaizzi, 1978). Several participants reported developing emotional relationships and having children with clients, former clients, or pimps; some participants were married to men who pimped them. Supportive relationships with other streetwalkers were largely nonexistent; streetwalking constitutes a solitary business for most. The majority reported drug addiction, although less than half entered prostitution to support an already established drug habit. Financial need propelled many into …
How Late To Pay? Understanding Wage Arrears In Russia, John S. Earle, Klara Sabirianova Peter
How Late To Pay? Understanding Wage Arrears In Russia, John S. Earle, Klara Sabirianova Peter
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We organize an empirical analysis of Russian wage arrears around hypotheses concerning factors that create incentives for firms to pay late and for workers to tolerate late payment, both reinforced by a prevalent environment of overdue wages. Our analysis draws upon nationally representative household panel data matched with employer data to show substantial interfirm variation with the probability of arrears positively related to firm age, size, state ownership, and declining performance. Estimation of a constrained multinomial logit model also reveals intrafirm, variation related to job tenure and small shareholdings in the firm. Workers tend to have higher arrears in rural …
Less Developed Country Business Cycles, Hing-Man Leung
Less Developed Country Business Cycles, Hing-Man Leung
Research Collection School Of Economics
Less developed countries (LDCs) have experienced considerable business cycles in recent decades. This coincides with significant increases in their external debt to GDP ratios. Recent theoretical credit cycles literature suggests that indebtedness, and the resulting liquidity constraints, could explain LDC business cycles. This paper builds a macroeconomic model to trace the LDC income paths. In this model indebtedness and liquidity constraints reduce aggregate investment. We use the World Data (1995) to calibrate for the convergence parameter. It is found that LDC cycles are convergent and non-oscillatory, and indebtedness delays the return to long-term steady state income.
Point Of Transition Service Integration Project: A Multiple-Case Study Of A Systems Change Intervention, David A. Noyes Edd
Point Of Transition Service Integration Project: A Multiple-Case Study Of A Systems Change Intervention, David A. Noyes Edd
Dissertations
The Point of Transition Service Integration Project (POTSIP) was initiated in 1997 in California as a three-year model demonstration grant funded by the Department of Education. The goal of the project was to improve the level of cooperation and collaboration among public schools, the State Department of Rehabilitation, and the State Department of Developmental Services related to efforts assisting students with severe disabilities who are transitioning from school to adult life. This qualitative study examined a stakeholder-centered perspective on the transition process within the POTSIP model. The purpose of this study was to identify the critical incidents and factors that …
Networked Growth, Hing-Man Leung
Networked Growth, Hing-Man Leung
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper searches for a new growth engine in the new Info-Tech economy. IT-network effects are incorporated into Romer’s (1990) framework. Network effects support long-term steady state growth in per capita variables even without innovation, and growth rate increases with network externalities. Networked growth is sub-optimal, so should we break up an IT monopoly? To answer this we compare monopoly, Cournot and Bertrand set-ups. Cournot always ranks last socially, but Bertrand can be superior to monopoly if network effects are strong. When network interacts with Romer’s endogenous innovation, growth rate increases, probably by up to a percentage point per year.
Has Training Helped Employ Xiagang In China? A Tale From Two Cities, Benu Bidani, Chor-Ching Goh, Christopher J. O'Leary
Has Training Helped Employ Xiagang In China? A Tale From Two Cities, Benu Bidani, Chor-Ching Goh, Christopher J. O'Leary
Reports
This study evaluates the effectiveness of training programs for workers retrenched from Chinese state-owned enterprises in the cities of Shenyang and Wuhan. A variety of impact estimators were applied, however ordinary least squares (OLS) controlling for observable characteristic s was robust. We find that training dampens reemployment prospects in Shenyang but improves them in Wuhan. Training impact estimates computed by propensity score and log odds ratio matching imposing various support condition rules, yielded estimates very similar to those from the OLS. The estimates suggest that participation in training reduces the probability of being employed one year after participation by about …
