Co-Parenting Influences: A Positive Report For The Millenium, Andrea Chrismer-Still
Theses
In this correlalional study of later adolescents who experience parental divorce, six co-parenting influences were assessed in an effort to identify predictors and factors that contribute to overall satisfaction with life. Subjects completed a survey comprised of demographic information which included an adaptation of a survey (Silitsky, 1996), a Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) (Diener, E. Simmons, R. Larsen, R. & Griffin, S., 1985), and a Perceived Social Support Family Scale (Pss-Fa) (Procidano, M & Heller, K., 1983). The adapted scale and the PSS-Fa measured perceptions by the later adolescent of their family of origin and their levels of()) parental …

Popular And Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View, Peter Swirski
Popular And Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View, Peter Swirski
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "Popular and Highbrow Literature: A Comparative View," Peter Swirski discusses the role and status of popular fiction in contemporary culture. Starting with the basic question, "Who needs popular fiction?," he surveys select sociological evidence and prevailing aesthetic arguments in order to take stock of the ways in which highbrow literature and popular fiction relate to each other. He begins with statistical and socio-economic data which casts a different lights on many myths prevailing in scholarship as well as in general social and cultural discourse, such as the death of the novel, the alleged decline of the reading …
A Comparative Approach To European Folk Poetry And The Erotic Wedding Motif, Louise O. Vasvari
A Comparative Approach To European Folk Poetry And The Erotic Wedding Motif, Louise O. Vasvari
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "A Comparative Approach to European Folk Poetry and the Erotic Wedding Motif," Louise O. Vasvari posits that while the corpus of folk poetry in any one area of Europe always differs from neighboring traditions, of greater interest is the existence of a large amount of related material across the continent. Nevertheless, while research in folk poetry has been rich in field collecting and cataloguing, there exists little in-depth comparative study of folk poetry. Doubtless, this is owing in part to the fact that the great majority of the texts are accessible only in the original language or …
Western Mediations In Reevaluating The Communist Past: A Comparative Analysis Of Gothár's Time Stands Still And Andonov's Yesterday, Roumiana Deltcheva
Western Mediations In Reevaluating The Communist Past: A Comparative Analysis Of Gothár's Time Stands Still And Andonov's Yesterday, Roumiana Deltcheva
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Roumiana Deltcheva's article, "Western Mediations in Reevaluating the Communist Past: A Comparative Analysis of Gothár's Time Stands Still and Andonov's Yesterday," offers a comparative analysis of two films, Peter Gothár's Time Stands Still and Ivan Andonov's Yesterday. Both films appeared in the 1980s, in Hungary and Bulgaria, respectively, and were highly acclaimed by the critics and the audience. Both films deal with the Communist past of these two countries. In her analysis, Deltcheva's adopts the perspective of "in-between peripherality," a particular manifestation of the post-colonial paradigm in its application to East Central and Central Europe. The two films use similar …
A Comparative Analysis Of Text And Music And Gender And Audience In Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Andrea Fábry
A Comparative Analysis Of Text And Music And Gender And Audience In Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Andrea Fábry
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Andrea Fábry discusses in her article, "A Comparative Analysis of Text and Music and Gender and Audience in Duke Bluebeard's Castle," the image of Bluebeard as a metaphor for gender relations. Béla Bartók's opera and its libretto represent a prime example of the metaphor that in turn can be found in a range of text types, from fairy tales through novels to films. In the article, Fábry analyzes Bartók's contribution to the metaphor, namely with his opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle. She relates the opera to the text of the opera's libretto, written by film theoretician Béla Balázs, and places her …
Literature, "In-House" Writers, And Processes Of Success In Publishing, Frank De Glas
Literature, "In-House" Writers, And Processes Of Success In Publishing, Frank De Glas
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Frank de Glas discusses in his article, "Literature, 'In-House' Writers, and Processes of Success in Publishing," the fact that too many studies of twentieth-century publishing practices concentrate on individual case studies while neglecting more general patterns and that too little use is made of theoretical concepts developed in the sociology of cultural production. He argues that one of the contributing elements in the economic and artistic success of a publishing house is the bringing together of a productive group of "in-house authors." To build up and to maintain such a group, publishers steadily launch new authors who they hope will …
Implementing Organizational Change In A Public Agency, David E. Freed
Implementing Organizational Change In A Public Agency, David E. Freed
Dissertations
A major challenge that faces most institutions is that of adapting to and managing change. The leadership of an organization is a key focal point for analyzing how change is accomplished.
This study examines both a theoretical and practical approach to the study of organizational and cultural change. The focus is a public agency and the actions and decision processes of the top leadership relating to organizational and cultural change during the period 1992 to 1995.
From the theoretical perspective, Karl Weick’s approach called sensemaking is examined and a model is created. Sensemaking is an activity that is an explanatory …

Cognitive Components Of Social Anxiety: A Comparison Of Elderly And Young Adults, Jeffery Alan Mcneil
Dissertations
The present study investigated the underlying cognitive elements of social anxiety in elderly and young adult samples. The young adult participants in this study were 99 undergraduate students from a Midwestern university, recruited through scheduled undergraduate classes from both the Communication and Education Departments. Fifty elderly participants from two independent living senior residence centers were recruited through organizational meetings and contacts coordinated through the housing director or the wellness director. One senior residential center was located in the Midwest, while the other was in the Southeast. The study employed well recognized self-report cognitive measures to assess social anxiety: the Fear …
Foundations Of Board Development: Theory And Practice In Community Service Organizations, David P. Moxley
Foundations Of Board Development: Theory And Practice In Community Service Organizations, David P. Moxley
Dissertations
As community service agencies become increasingly responsible for the provision of numerous social benefits relevant to the advancement of the social welfare of communities, the effective performance of their governance boards becomes an important aspect of a policy of privatization. This dissertation examines the role of these boards in contemporary human services and community development, and the important functions they serve in the effective transfer of social products, goods, and services from the public to nonprofit sector.
The author introduces the idea of board development as an imperative for community service boards to embrace in order to strengthen their service …
Is Trade Liberalization An Important Cause Of Increasing U.S. Wage Inequality? The Interaction Of Theory And Policy, John B. Davis
Is Trade Liberalization An Important Cause Of Increasing U.S. Wage Inequality? The Interaction Of Theory And Policy, John B. Davis
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The majority of mainstream economists believe that globalization and trade liberalization have had a minor role in increasing U.S. wage inequality. A minority argues that capital mobility and outsourcing indicate a larger effect. This paper first surveys these views, and then argues that how we understand the policy consequences of trade liberalization helps determine the character of our analysis of the issue itself. Thus, a shift in policy perspective, to consider the "equity costs" of trade liberalization in terms of eroded U.S. labor market institutions, produces a larger framework for analyzing the consequences of globalization and trade liberalization than is …
Shrinking Kin Networks In Italy Due To Sustained Low Fertility, Cecilia Tomassini, Douglas A. Wolf
Shrinking Kin Networks In Italy Due To Sustained Low Fertility, Cecilia Tomassini, Douglas A. Wolf
Center for Policy Research
Among the closely watched demographic trends of the late 20th Century is a pronounced drop in fertility rates throughout much of the world. Italy presents a particularly interesting case for study: in 1960, Italy’s total fertility rate (TFR) was 2.41; by 1995 it had fallen to 1.17. According to United Nations projections, by 2050 Italy will be the second oldest country in the world, with 3.4 persons aged 60 or older for each person under age 15. Besides overall population aging, another implication of sustained low fertility is smaller families and kin groups. We investigate the consequences of projected changes …

Family And Child Psychosocial Functioning Of Infant Heart Transplant Recipients, Kimberly R. Freeman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
With the advancement of medical procedures, heart transplantation has become a viable alternative for infants born with congenital or acquired heart disease. Although these children are thought to experience much improvement in their overall physical functioning post-transplantation, the long-term psychological functioning of these children and their families is currently unknown. This study examines the long-term family functioning and psychosocial development of infant heart transplant recipients in comparison to children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and non-clinical control children. Results indicate that infant heart transplant recipients and their families experience fewer overall problems as compared to the CHD group, and more …

Estimating The Probability Of Severe Convective Storms: A Local Perspective For The Central And Northern Plains, Preston W. Leftwich Jr.
Estimating The Probability Of Severe Convective Storms: A Local Perspective For The Central And Northern Plains, Preston W. Leftwich Jr.
NOAA Technical Reports and Related Materials
Summary and Conclusions
A procedure to estimate probabilities of the occurrence of severe convective storms within local areas has been described. Probabilities were based on a simulated climatology and the relative frequency of severe convective events when a selected site was contained within an operational Outlook or Watch. Combined data from five local areas were used to develop a general model for local probabilities within the central and northern Plains region. Attachment of probabilities to specific products placed values within a framework familiar to both forecasters and "end-users." Application of results in an operational scenario demonstrated representative local probabilities and …

The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami
The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The focus of this article is the persistent continued strength of wet markets in Hong Kong and the weakness of supermarkets in the fresh food area. This phenomenon is surprising because, based on the experiences in North America and Western Europe and given the well-developed economy of Hong Kong, one would have expected supermarkets to dominate fresh food retailing and wet markets to be in retreat. In this article, the authors explain the reasons for the continued dominance of wet markets. They argue that consumers’shopping and consumption culture, the effectiveness of wet markets in handling consumers’needs, and the appropriateness of …
