The occasion of this essay is an unsolicited but welcome invitation to comment on Irving Louis Horowitz's (1993) most recent book, The Decomposition of Sociology, a work that is generating considerable discussion (e.g., Bauer Mengelberg 1995; Chriss 1994; Goldman 1994; Horowitz 1994, 1995; Pizzorno 1994; Wagner 1994). For the past decade, Wheaton College, a small liberal arts institution located in Norton, Massachusetts, has been creating, refining, and integrating a range of initiatives designed to develop students into active and reflective learners. Some of these initiatives grew out of explicit institutional commitments to teaching and learning innovation, while others were in fact happy accidents of circumstance, or situations where an individual interesting program idea took hold, spread into other units of the College, and was itself transformed in the process.

What we know about service-learning programs regarding impacts on students, communities, institutions:
• little systematic data analysis has been done;
• most existing findings are anecdotal;

The aim of the study is to examine the cross-cultural features of Australian and Korean complaint letters. The point of view adopted is that cultural barriers generate difficulties to producing efficient and successful intercultural communication in addition to linguistic barriers. Although the concept of complaint letters is the same in the two countries, there are difficulties when Australians and Koreans attempt to communicate with the other culture. 本地文化與流行歌詞的關係

文化，就是指人類慣有的生活模式。它會因時代、地域、歷史、民族性等差異而有所不同。香港開埠已歷百餘載，但真正建立屬於"香港人"的文化，還只是近數十年的事。舊日歷史遺留的問題，令香港被視為無根的土地：加上其特殊的地理位置，香港自然成為東西方不同文化的交流點。香港的本土文化，就在強大的外來文化壓力下建立起來。

流行歌曲是流行文化的一個組成部分，亦能反映出時代變化。所謂 "流行" 是指一段時期內，大部分人熱衷於某種生活模式；時間一久，人們又轉而追求新一種生活模式。這種潮來潮去、乘時盛衰的表現，正是通俗文化發展的特點。值得注意的是，香港的流行歌詞或多或少沾有商業味道，而香港流行歌曲之所以發展蓬勃，亦有賴於 "經濟掛帥"；故此，仔細研究本地的流行歌詞，就像把弄著鏡子，不難照出香港獨特文化的真面目。

例如七十年代中期，香港經濟起飛，"大香港文化" 一時成為主流，許冠傑的通俗淺白的粵語歌曲大行其道；八九年六四前後，香港洋溢著一片愛國氣氛，遂於當時湧現了一批支持學運的歌曲。

由此可見，本地文化與流行歌詞的關係相當密切，歌詞反映的是六百萬香港人多年來的眾生相。本文以近三十年來粵語流行歌詞的演變作藍本，逐一細析香港這一時代的歌詞，並兼論三位具代表性的填詞人，探索他們的詞風在潮流漲退之下，如何產生變化。

There is a need for validation of new cultural-sensitive tests for assessing the Hispanic population in the United States that will take into account their cultural competence in the psychological evaluation practice. The purpose of this study was to explore the suitability of the Kinetic Family Drawings as a measure of Minuchin's Structural Family Theory among Hispanic American families with substance-abusing and nonsubstance-abusing adolescents.

Method. The Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD), the Structural Family Interaction Scale-Revised (SFIS-R), and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales (FACES II) were administered to 141 families, 74 with an adolescent with substance-abusing problems and 67 …

A Case Study Comparison Of Brief Group Treatment And Brief Individual Treatment In The Modification Of Denial Among Child Sexual Abusers, John F. Ulrich

Problem Statement. O'Donohue and Letourneau (1993) demonstrated success in modifying denial among child sexual abusers with brief group treatment when probable incarceration existed for subjects who did not admit. This current study replicated and enhanced their treatment model while omitting the adverse legal consequences for subjects remaining in denial. Brief individual therapy was used as a comparison treatment condition. Factors theoretically contributing to denial were explored.

Methodology. Ten subjects were evaluated as individual case studies in two non-randomly assigned treatment conditions. Five subjects received nine group therapy sessions and five received nine individual therapy sessions. Subjects were selected from …

Problem. Although moral development research has focused extensively on Kohlberg's moral judgment theory and Gilligan's considerations of moral orientation, little has directly addressed the issue of integration of the voices of care and justice. This study proposed that, with maturation, a more integrated moral orientation would guide moral decision making. Integration and the impact of age, gender, ego maturity, and religious commitment were examined from a developmental perspective.

Implicit And Explicit Memory In Experimentally Induced Moods, Erika Garvin-Dale

This experiment compares implicit and explicit memory in college students in experimentally induced moods. It was designed to eliminate the confounding of implicit-perceptual and explicit-conceptual memory tests by using conceptual implicit and explicit tests. It was hypothesized that the depressed mood group would perform as well as the neutral group on the implicit measure, but not the explicit measure. College students underwent neutral or depressive mood inductions, then participated in an incidental learning task in which they judged whether or not a word fit in a sentence. Mathematical problem solving has been the focus of recent curriculum reform. Researchers have investigated factors that appear to influence mathematical problem solving: one of these factors is metacognition. This study identified metacognitive aspects and investigated the relationship of metacognition and age in the context of mathematical problem solving. Twenty four children were randomly chosen: eight children from years two. four and six. The children were given the same non-routine problem to solve. A semi-structured interview and observation protocol were developed and used to determine students' metacognitive aspects. This study employed a survey research approach, utilising a questionnaire to explore this topic. This survey was given to a group of one hundred and six students in Year Six and Seven in a metropolitan Western Australian primary school. A single study investigates two cognitive theories of anger arousal, and the hostile attribution bias (HAB) phenomenon from the aggression literature. It was argued that the role of B. Weiner’s (1985, 1986) casual attribution dimension of intentionality has been underestimated in anger arousal; and it was hypothesised that when attributions of intentionality increase anger arousal increases. R. S. Lazarus and K. A. Smith's ( 1988) appraisal theory holds that emotions arc aroused in response to personally relevant events, and without this appraisal process causal attibutions are insufficient to evoke emotions.
