The Long-Run Costs Of Moderate Inflation, Gregory Hess, Charles S. Morris Jan 1996

The Long-Run Costs Of Moderate Inflation, Gregory Hess, Charles S. Morris

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Long-run price stability is generally considered to be a primary goal of monetary policymakers in many countries. One reason policymakers care about inflation is that it can harm economic performance. Numerous studies of the impact of inflation on economic performance have focused on whether increases in inflation reduce economic growth in the long run (Barro, Fischer 1993, Bruno and Easterly, and Clark). These studies have found that prolonged high inflation does in fact reduce economic growth, but they were not able to detect a significant long-run relationship between real growth and low or moderate inflation. Because anti-inflationary policies typically have …

Environmental Indices For The Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (Minnesota, Usa) Urban Heat Island - 1989, Paul E. Todhunter Jan 1996

Environmental Indices For The Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (Minnesota, Usa) Urban Heat Island - 1989, Paul E. Todhunter

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

A homogeneous, high-density, daily maximum and minimum air temperature dataset was assembled for the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA), Minnesota, USA, to conduct basic urban climatological investigations on the spatial structure and temporal-scale dependence of the urban heat island, and to quantify the urban heat island effect upon several derived environmental indices. By combining data from National Weather Service cooperative stations, the University of Minnesota-St. Paul field station, and the previously unused KSTP-TV cooperative weather station network, a merged dataset of 26 stations was assembled for the TCMA for the year l989. Extensive quality control was conducted to identify suspect …

Semantic And Schematic Similarities Between Database Objects: A Context-Based Approach, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth Jan 1996

Semantic And Schematic Similarities Between Database Objects: A Context-Based Approach, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

In a multidatabase system, schematic conflicts between two objects are usually of interest only when the objects have some semantic similarity. We use the concept of semantic proximity, which is essentially an abstraction/mapping between the domains of the two objects associated with the context of comparison. An explicit though partial context representation is proposed and the specificity relationship between contexts is defined. The contexts are organized as a meet semi-lattice and associated operations like the greatest lower bound are defined. The context of comparison and the type of abstractions used to relate the two objects form the basis of a …

Arkansas And The U.S. Economy In The Late 20th Century: Reinventing Ourselves Inside Out For A Better Tomorrow, Don P. Diffine Ph.D. Jan 1996

Arkansas And The U.S. Economy In The Late 20th Century: Reinventing Ourselves Inside Out For A Better Tomorrow, Don P. Diffine Ph.D.

Belden Center Books

Arkansas is truly an ideal spot in our great land. Situated at the buckle of the Sunbelt, Arkansas is benefiting from the northeast-to-southwest shift of population in the United States. The migration from frostbelt to sunbelt, and the economic emergence of the southern tier of states, have thrust our Natural State into the middle of today's action. A full 50 percent of the U.S. population is within a 550-mile radius of Arkansas' borders. More than 1,000,000 people live within a one-hour's drive of our state Capital.

The entire mid-south has been an underdeveloped region in the past, but it is …

How Do Children Tell: The Disclosure Process In Child Sexual Abuse, April Bradley, James Wood Jan 1996

How Do Children Tell: The Disclosure Process In Child Sexual Abuse, April Bradley, James Wood

Departmental Papers (Psych)

Children's disclosure of sexual abuse has been described as a quasi-developmental process that includes stages of denial, reluctance, disclosure, recantation, and reaffirmation (Sorenson & Snow, 1991, Summit, 1983). It has been reported that nearly 75% of sexual abuse victims initially deny abuse and that nearly 25% eventually recant their allegations (Sorenson & Snow, 1991). The present study examined disclosures in 234 sexual abuse cases validated by Protective Services in El Paso, Texas. Denial of abuse occurred in 6% of cases, and recantation in 4% of cases in which a child had already disclosed abuse. Four of the eight victims who …

The Future Of Francophone Africa Without The Aid And Influence Of Its Former Colonial Power, France, Ryan Mcgovern Jan 1996

The Future Of Francophone Africa Without The Aid And Influence Of Its Former Colonial Power, France, Ryan Mcgovern

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

French colonialism dramatically changed sub-Sahara Africa in the region now called Francophone Africa. In 1960 the French granted the francophone countries independence but French influence did not end. France's neo- colonial influence caused many problems for the newly independent countries including economic dependence, unwanted boundaries and the establishment of an elite class. The Africans themselves have been struggling with mismanagement, corruption and political and economic instability. Recent breaks in Franco-African relations has caused the French to take a step back from its high level of influence in Africa. In order for francophone Africa to prosper without the aid and influence …
