Towards Rational Trade Offs Between Environment And Hydro-Power, V Ranganathan
Towards Rational Trade Offs Between Environment And Hydro-Power, V Ranganathan
IIMB Management Review
The economic importance of hydro-power has long been recognised the world over. In fact, a certain correlation between exploitation of hydropower potential and economic growth is clearly discernible. Developed nations of North America and Western Europe, for example, have exploited 83% and 98%, respectively, of their potential hydro- power, while relatively poorer East European, Asian and African countries have a much lower record, ranging between 8% and 36% (see chart). Recent trends in hydro-power development in India are a source of serious concern: for instance, the hydro-thermal ratio of power generation in the country has been steadily declining from 1:1 …
Implementing Service Learning In Higher Education, Robert G. Bringle, Julie A. Hatcher
Implementing Service Learning In Higher Education, Robert G. Bringle, Julie A. Hatcher
Higher Education
In a recent article, "Creating the New American College," Ernest Boyer challenges higher education to reconsider its mission to be that of educating students for a life as responsible citizens, rather than educating students solely for a career. By doing so, the "New American College" will take pride in connecting theory to practice in order to meet challenging social problems, particularly those faced by universities in urban settings. As Ira Harkavey of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Community Partnerships has noted, "Universities cannot afford to remain shores of affluence, self-importance and horticultural beauty at the edge of island seas …

Developing Graduate Educational Technology Programs From A Service Learning Platform, John Lebaron, Dorothy Burke, Christine Maloof
Higher Education
The graduate College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML), is in the second year of a service centered model for graduate coursework in educational technology. The two courses Technology and Learning Environments (T&LE, 1994), and Technology and Schools of the Future (T&SF, 1995) had previously been offered as "traditional" academic offerings. In cooperation with the Lawrence Public Schools, one of the poorest districts in the nation, these courses were modified as "service learning" experiences. A more detailed account of the first year of this project (LeBaron and Scribner-MacLean, 1995) is available on request to the authors. This …
An Empirical Analysis Of The Prices Of Nigeria's Agricultural Export Commodities, Grace O. Evbuomwan
An Empirical Analysis Of The Prices Of Nigeria's Agricultural Export Commodities, Grace O. Evbuomwan
Economic and Financial Review
The study examines the role of price incentives in expanding agricultural commodity exports. Using the concept of efficiency, based on the theory of opportunity cost, nominal and effective protection coefficients (NPC & EPC) were estimated for cocoa, coffee, cotton, palm kernel, palm oil, rubber and soyabean. Their world market prices served as the efficiency benchmarks in order to determine the pattern of incentives or disincentives to the Nigerian agricultural export sector. The NPC values obtained ranged from 0.47 for cotton to I. I 8 for soyabean pre-Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) and during the SAP the values ranged from 0. 63 …
Economic Growth And Foreign Debt: A Case Study Of Nigeria, J. O. Ashinze, E. A. Onwioduokit
Economic Growth And Foreign Debt: A Case Study Of Nigeria, J. O. Ashinze, E. A. Onwioduokit
Economic and Financial Review
In this study, a macro-economic model is used to examine the relationship between external debt and economic growth in Nigeria. The study has established empirically that foreign credit only contributed positively to growth between 1988 and /992 when the resources mobilized externally were used in directly productive activities. However, between 1979 and /987 as well as the period /993-/994, there was a negative relationship between foreign capital and growth. Among other factors, policy inconsistencies, drying up of external assistance and political instability were identified as the main factors that militated against foreign credit-induced growth of the Nigerian economy.
On Early Warning Models For The Identification Of Problem Banks In Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa
On Early Warning Models For The Identification Of Problem Banks In Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa
Economic and Financial Review
This paper proposes alternative early warning models which could be helpful in identifying problem banks in Nigeria. The models rely on the /ogit-analytic technique and the use of financial ratios derived from the monthly returns the licensed banks render to both the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). The two separate models, each developed for commercial and merchant bank, are more efficient in that they drastically reduced the mis-classification errors inherent in other failure prediction models developed in the past. To illustrate the applications of the models for policy, an appraisal of the financial condition …
Further Empirical Analysis Of Inflation In Nigeria, O. M. Fakiyesi
Further Empirical Analysis Of Inflation In Nigeria, O. M. Fakiyesi
Economic and Financial Review
This paper analyses the main factors which influence inflation in Nigeria with a view to determining the relevant policy instruments that will reduce it. The empirical analysis confirms the findings of earlier studies that monetary expansion significantly influences the rate of inflation in Nigeria. The other dominant factor is the exchange rate which has a significant and positive impact on inflation. Growth in real income and level of rainfall are also significant in explaining inflation in Nigeria.

Against Subordination: Morality, Discourse, And Decision In The Legal Theory Of Jurgen Habermas, William Rehg
Against Subordination: Morality, Discourse, And Decision In The Legal Theory Of Jurgen Habermas, William Rehg
Cardozo Law Review
This reflection explores the manner in which Jurgen Habermas's Between Facts and Norms establishes a relationship between law (or legal procedures) and an idealized conception of rational practical discourse. Part I of this Article spells out a problem that arises if one subordinates law to such idealizations of practical reason; here I will argue that the subordination of law to morality is part of a larger problem that one does not escape simply by analyzing law in the broader terms of discursive justification in general. Part II pursues further the question of whether Habermas's legal theory escapes this difficulty, turning …

Reflexive Law, Civil Society, And Negative Rights, Andrew Arato
Reflexive Law, Civil Society, And Negative Rights, Andrew Arato
Cardozo Law Review
Jurgen Habermas has remained faithful to the heritage of Critical Theory-to the method and perspective of imminent social criticism. His concept of "paradigm" is fully intelligible only in context of such background. It means, first and foremost, enlightenment concerning a given society with a normative project in mind-in the present case, the actualization of the system of rights. Thus, a paradigm is a form of diagnosis, based on the rational reconstruction of forms of consciousness, filtered and synthesized into theory, that seeks to orient action. At all points, the construction of paradigms refers to a social totality which is subjected …
