Integrating Indian Health Programs Into Medicaid Managed Care Systems, Part 1, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Ann Zuvekas

Center for Health Policy Research

The Indian Health Service (IHS), recognizing that state Medicaid programs are rapidly purchasing managed care plans for their beneficiaries and that managed care enrollment has significant implications for both Indians and Indian health facilities, convened this Roundtable to discuss options for participation in such care. The purpose of this roundtable was to identify options to increase Medicaid managed care participation by Indian health programs. These include programs operated directly by IHS, programs operated by tribes under the Indian Self-Determination Act, and urban Indian programs under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act.By design, Roundtable participants were a group …

IIMB Management Review

Organisational Ethnography, by Suchitra Mouly and Jayaram Sankaran applies the insider or ethnographic perspective to the study of Indian R&D settings. In spite of its rather forbidding title, (ethnography according to the Webster’s dictionary is cultural anthropology), there are some interesting and novel aspects to this research work.

Delayering Organisation Structure, Nina Jacob, V S Mahesh, N M Agrawal Mar 1996

Delayering Organisation Structure, Nina Jacob, V S Mahesh, N M Agrawal

IIMB Management Review

Delayering as a tool for organisational re-structuring has been a concern of both theorists and practitioners for some years now, but analyses of the literature have been inconclusive with respect to its impact on actual performance. Delayering has been conceptualised as the process of removing specific levels from the existing hierarchy of an organisation. The result is a flattening of the organisation’s vertical boundaries, affecting such traditional structural manifestations of hierarchy as span of control, chain of command, and limits of authority.

Share Buyback Aspects And Implications, Dilip D Kare, R Vaidyanathan

IIMB Management Review

Allowing Indian firms to buy back their shares has been a subject of debate for some time. It is currently under consideration by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). India’s second largest corporate, Reliance Industries (Rs 94 billion by market & capitalisation), set a trend recently by getting its shareholders’ approval for buy-back, subject to other statutory approvals.

Gearing Up For Competition New Challenges For Indian Banks, J V Shetty Mar 1996

Gearing Up For Competition New Challenges For Indian Banks, J V Shetty

IIMB Management Review

Influenced by the economic reforms programme, banking in India is witnessing a shift away from meeting social priorities to confronting market forces. This has led to its improved performance during the last two years, generating considerable optimism that the country will eventually be blessed with a sound, streamlined and competitive banking system that would help it successfully meet the challenges of the global marketplace.

Religion And Healing The Mind/Body/Self, Meredith B. Mcguire Mar 1996

Religion And Healing The Mind/Body/Self, Meredith B. Mcguire

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

In order to understand the linkage between religion and healing, we must go well beyond the theme of body regulation. Although religion does involve body regulation and control, and although these functions are reflected in healing practices, there are many other ways by which religion is linked with human bodies. We will arrive at a far richer appreciation of this linkage if we start with a broad sociology of the human body, its illnesses and healing, and ask the expanded question: How is religion involved in these complex processes?

What Is The Value Of Scientific Knowledge? An Application To Global Warming Using The Price Model, William D. Nordhaus, David Popp Mar 1996

What Is The Value Of Scientific Knowledge? An Application To Global Warming Using The Price Model, William D. Nordhaus, David Popp

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Governments must cope with the enormous uncertainties about both future climate change as well as the costs and benefits of slowing climate change. This study analyses the value of improved information about a variety of geophysical and economic processes. The value of information is estimated using the “PRICE model” which is a probabilistic extension of earlier models of the economics of global warming. The study uses five different approaches to estimating the value of information about all uncertain parameters and about individual parameters. It is estimated that the value of early information is between $1.5 and $2 billion for each …

An Asymptotic Expansion In The Garch(1,1) Model, Oliver B. Linton Mar 1996

An Asymptotic Expansion In The Garch(1,1) Model, Oliver B. Linton

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We develop order T -1 asymptotic expansions for the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) and a two step approximate QMLE in the GARCH(1,1) model. We calculate the approximate mean and skewness and hence the Edgeworth-B distribution function. We suggest several methods of bias reduction based on these approximation.
