Prehistoric Native American Fisheries Of The Central California Coast, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Terry L. Jones

Over 77,000 fish remains from 51 archaeological sites on the central California coast between San Mateo and San Luis Obispo counties, deposited between 6200 B.C. and A.D. 1830, were studied to assess prehistoric species distribution, diversity, and Native American fisheries. Remains were obtained from exposed rocky coastal sites, lagoon-estuaries at Elkhorn Slough and Morro Bay, and the freshwater drainages of the Pajaro and Salinas rivers. On the rocky coast, 58.4% of the remains represented large inshore species, 26.9% were small schooling species, and 11.8% were surfperches (family Embiotocidae). The Anchor, Volume 109.09: November 1, 1995, Hope College

The Anchor: 1995

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This final report reviews three years of research focused on the coordination of perception and action. Human performance has been evaluated within the framework of a closed-loop system where perception and action are intimately coupled. Four problems have been studied: the control of locomotion, dynamic occlusion, depth perception, and minimally invasive surgery. Studies of the control of locomotion have shown that for control of altitude there was an interaction between the flow structure (splay or depression angle) and the event dynamic (hover or forward flight). Results showed that in hover conditions, depression angle specifies altitude changes most reliably; but in …

An Allais Measure Of Production Sector Waste Due To Quotas, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, Richard K. Perrin

In this paper we adapt a partial equilibrium approach of Allais and Diewert to measure the efficiency loss in the producing sector due to quotas. The measure of waste is the additional profits available due to reallocation subject to constraints that the welfare of persons and firms outside the sector is unaffected. An example is presented using the tobacco quota program in the U.S.

Subscriber's Behaviors In Electronic Discussion Groups: A Comparison Between Academics And Practitioners, Louisa Ha

This paper examines subscribers' behaviors in electronic discussion groups and compares the behavior of academic and practitioner subscribers. Data were collected from electronic mail surveys of the subscribers of four electronic discussion groups. Results of this study show that practitioners are much more likely to participate than academics as discussion leaders, respondents, and information-seekers. Academic subscribers are much more likely to act as quiet observers who only read others' messages and never post one themselves.

The article makes a case for a more flexible and realistic explanatory practice in the family field. The conventional linkage between the worth of an explanatory statement and its predictive power, for, example, reflects cultural assumptions as much as it does rational thought. In one's culture, knowledge implies power so that prediction allows for control of the present and the foreseeable future. A growing paradox faces the United States. There is simultaneously a rise in support for isolationism alongside an increasing globalization of business and economic activity. Examined separately, both trends possess a certain logical appeal. After all, given the end of the Cold War, many Americans expect an increased focus on domestic issues, of which there are plenty. At the same time, a global marketplace based on international trade has arrived. This paper examines the tensions these two trends present when placed alongside one another.

In 1993 and 1994 the Underwater Archaeology Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology conducted an intensive survey of the remains of a small, wooden hulled craft in the Great Pee Dee River near Cheraw, South Carolina. The project was sponsored in part by the Cheraw Historical Society and partially funded by a grant from the South Carolina Humanities Council. The Ingram Vessel (38CT204), named after its discoverer Miller Ingram, lay overturned and largely buried beneath the river sediments and protected by a large mushroom-shaped rock just upstream of the site. Using Recurrence Probabilities To Estimate The Volume Of Multifamily Mortgage Originations, Robert M. Dunsky, James R. Follain, Jan Ondrich

This study uses recurrence probabilities to generate forecasts of the volume of multifamily mortgage originations for the period 1992-2002. The approach concentrates on predicting the volume of property sales using the baseline of a multifamily prepayment hazard estimation to generate the predicted cohort-specific proportion of calendar sales in a given year. The forecast for the volume of originations depends strongly on the definition of the relevant mortgage population. A definition that excludes assumptions but otherwise includes all properties selling between 1971 and 1991 in which a first mortgage was used in its acquisition yields a forecast of $47.2 billion for …

On The Equivalence Of Upward And Downward Inheritance Reasoners, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

In this paper, we analyze systematically the downward (property flow) and the upward (individual flow) views of inheritance for different categories of inheritance networks. We observe that both these views assign the same meaning to tree-structured hierarchies, and explain the divergence in the interpretation of more general networks in terms of their expressive power. This simple analysis sheds light on the inherent nature of nonmonotonic inheritance and can form the basis for the design of efficient algorithms for certain classes of queries.
