Since the Nebraska State Historical Society began in the late 1870s, many newspaper editors have served on its Board. Among these was J. Sterling Morton, owner/editor of the Nebraska City News. Morton, and others like him, urged the Society to begin collecting newspapers as early as 1890. The Society's efforts to gather papers from all over the state have resulted in a large and significant historical collection. Researchers use the Society's newspapers today to gather information about historical events, to study the development and demise of communities, and to trace ancestors. It has been a long time since there was so much talk of heroes around the sports scene. Two weeks ago this talk was precipitated by the news that Mickey Mantle was paying the price for his alcoholism and would undergo a liver transplant. Of interest to me was the fact that virtually no one suggested that Mantle was any less a great American hero in the face of his well documented alcoholism.

The Al Davis Oakland Los Angeles Irwindale Raiders are heading back to Oakland; the Chicago St. Louis Phoenix Cardinals are revving the engines on the moving vans headed to Los Angeles; the New York Yankees have signed Darryl Strawberry to a contract to play baseball; the New Jersey Devils have swept the Detroit Red Wings and won Lord Stanley's Cup on their way to Nashville; and Mike Tyson was honored as a hero in a public ceremony in Harlem.

Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up on Tuesday at The Ball Park in Arlington, one of the newest, and by most accounts one of the most beautiful of the new stadiums. Although the concept of an All-Star game dates back to 1858 and a game between allstar teams from Brooklyn and New York, it was sixty-two years ago that the first modern all-star game was held, July 6, 1933.

On Sunday at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown New York that yearly ritual of induction will take place for the 56th time. Once again those players who have been chosen by the Baseball Writer's Association of America or by the Veterans Committee will have their great day of recognition as being among the elite players of the National Pastime.

Was he the greatest ballplayer of all time? He thought so and told everyone who would and would not listen that he was. In the first voting for entrance into the Hall of Fame Ty Cobb outpolled all his rivals. Ernest Hemmingway thought him one of the greatest, but also a despicable human being. It is this latter view that dominates the portrayal of Ty Cobb by Tommy Lee Jones in this stunning and deeply disturbing film just released on home video.
