Economic Development And Income Inequality: The Taiwan Case, Ju-Kuang Chang

This thesis examines income inequality in Taiwan from three perspectives: economic development, political democracy, and world-system/dependence. Education, population growth, population structure, unemployment, savings, and export growth are treated as variables. Below are the important conclusions.

Economic development has an effect on income inequality. The level of development is crucial. In the 1950s and 1960s, the relationship was significant, but in the next two decades economic development did not further decrease income inequality. Sector dualism was not a good predictor.

Democratization did not have an obvious relation with income inequality. But the stable political environment and the endeavors of government to …

The psychotherapeutic environment is changing. Pressure from outside the profession is motivating changes that are resulting in cost cutting and cost containment. Health management organizations and preferred provider organizations are beginning to control third party payment to mental health providers. This is counselling the profession to reevaluate and remodel how it performs therapy as numbers of sessions become more limited. Therapy is changing from a long lasting relationship with a therapist, in which personality transformation is sought for the client, to forms of brief therapy in which only problems and solutions, arising from the immediate issues, are focused on. The Effect Of Cooperative Games/Activities Involving Elementary Students On Cooperative Social Interaction, Karen S. Collins

The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether Cooperative Games/Activities influenced children’s cooperative values and interdependence in the classroom. Twenty-seven boys and twenty-eight girls were assigned to three groups: two cooperative games/activities experimental groups and one control group. Each student was pretested using a Group Behavior and Atmosphere Scale. Following the pretests, students in the control group continued with their regular physical education activities and the experimental groups played cooperative games. Cooperative games were played twice a week, for six weeks, for an average of forty-five minutes. After six weeks, all students were retested to determine changes in behavior. …

As is well known, a monetary union with a common currency confers on its members the advantage of fixed exchange rate and consequent relative price stability. While these advantages held sway up to the mid-1980s in the case of the seven member countries of the CEA franc zone in West Africa, the vulnerability of the zone to external shocks became manifest from the second half of the 1980s. In today's competitive world of athletics it is not uncommon to discover a few athletes actively involved in some form of vision enhancement motivated by the promise that the exercises will improve their athletic performance. A review of past and present literature in the area of sports vision revealed that these athletes are performing exercises based upon a very weak scientific foundation. Most of the research investigating the relationship between vision and athletic performance has been plagued by flawed methodology, as well as extremely low numbers of subjects. This paper analyzes the simplest neoclassical economy in which agents have finite lives and there is sustained per capita growth. The growth rate of the world economy depends upon countries’ savings propensities and common technology. Trade can reverse an economy’s autarkic growth trajectory, and a country with a high savings rate runs a current account surplus. If a surplus country expands aggregate demand while a deficit country contracts analogously, world growth increases. An appropriate international policy can change the path of the world economy from stagnation to growth.

A New Way Of Thinking About The Current Account, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

Extending the theory of generational accounts, I show that the conventional current account is not related to the real effects of a country's fiscal policy. For any international array of fiscal policies, a country can implement its own policy so that the conventional government and current account deficits are zero in every period. I argue that economists should develop a new measure of the current account. This measure is forward looking and keeps track of expected transfers between countries.

Serial Pattern Learning By Event Observation: Effects Of Varying Amounts Of Pattern Experience, Roger Stubblefield

The present study was designed to replicate the findings by Howard, Mutter & Howard (1992) that (1) overt behavioral responding is not prerequisite to serial pattern learning and (2) that observation produces a qualitatively different form of representation than an overt motor response. We also sought to extend these findings by determining how much exposure to the pattern is necessary to replicate these effects and by examining the role of stimulus-to-response mapping by adding an additional response group (unmapped-response). A version of the serial learning task used by Howard et al. (1992) was used. The task consisted of two phases. …

Undergraduates' Attitudes Toward The Causes Of Poverty And Homelessness: Individualistic Or Structural, Bentley Ponder

The objective of this thesis was to test whether undergraduate students support individualistic, structural or mixed explanations in explaining the causes of poverty and homelessness. The study was undertaken with the assumption that undergraduates would be more likely to use individualistic explanations, rather than structural, as previous poverty perceptional studies had found. A short questionnaire was administered in March and April 1994 to students in a mid-size Southern University. The final sample consisted of 299 students. Cross-tabular analysis, bivariate correlations, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Surprisingly, results indicated that students were more likely to support structural …

This paper presents a forward recursive procedure to calculate the expected system marginal cost curve (EMC). The EMC formulation allows for multi-state and multi-block dispatch of generating units and is used to determine the optimal energy of pumped-storage units. A new approach is developed to compute the first and second derivatives of the expected generation energy of a thermal unit with respect to the capacity of all thermal units in the system. The salient feature of the proposed approach is that it applies to hydro-thermal systems with multiple limited-energy hydro units.

The purpose of this management plan is to regulate fishing for rock lobsters (Family Palimuridae) in waters off the west coast of Western Australia such that the breeding stock of rock lobsters is maintained at a level known to have generated adequate recruitment of young lobsters in the past. This management plan does not constitute a change in the management arrangements for the rock lobster fishery. It essentially replaces the West Coast Rock Lobster Limited Entry Fishery Notice 1993 made under the Fisheries Act 1905 and makes the required changes to wording and structure necessitated by the proclamation of the …

This paper was originally prepared for the first National Fisheries Managers Conference in 1993. It is now updated and includes the current bag and size limits from around Australia as at 1 July, 1995. It is fairly obvious from this paper that there is a need for more cooperation between the states, particularly for species which have wide distributions. However, regional solutions can be a good approach for specific management needs, while general rules can be made more consistent in a number of cases.

Adult day care is a new and rapidly growing alternative to long term care for the burgeoning population of frail and disabled elderly. A review of the literature regarding adult day care services revealed a limited number of studies addressing client satisfaction. The current study of 68 participants of nine Kentucky adult day health and social model adult day care centers assessed client satisfaction with services and explored variables related to satisfaction. It was hypothesized that clients who preferred to be at the adult day care center rather than in another location would report higher levels of satisfaction with services …

Although sexual harassment has received a considerable amount of publicity since the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, current literature lacks an abundance of studies examining the outcome of sexual harassment cases. The researcher sought to examine the effect of an extralegal (legally irrelevant) factor and the amount of evidence on jury decision making. Specifically, the race of the defendant served as the extralegal factor, while the amount of evidence presented was determined in relation to how many variables (0, 2, or 4 sources of evidence) were included in a particular sexual harassment scenario.
