The purpose of this study was to identify needs of parents during the hospitalization of their critically ill neonate. Studies indicate that parents of critically ill neonates are under a certain degree of stress and that sources of stress are identifiable by parents and equated to needs and the importance of those needs.; This study used an exploratory, descriptive design to document the needs of parents while also identifying variables that influenced those needs. Past experimental research on the distribution of power in social networks indicated that central positions in a social network have a significant exchange advantage over peripheral positions. All of these studies have focused on economic exchange situations, in which the economic rewards are the sole basis of the exchange. These studies have not examined social exchange situations, in which the exchange of social courtesy between network positions is seen as important or more important than the economic rewards being exchanged. Feminist academicians and activists have been working diligently for decades to incorporate the experience of women into existing theory and research. The field of mediation and negotiation is no exception. Mediation, a form of conflict resolution, has become a more widespread alternative to litigation in recent years. Supporters describe it as a balanced, fair, and egalitarian mode for the resolution of disputes and the construction of agreements. Disputants come to the mediation table as "equals." Power imbalances are supposedly left at the door. Mediation empowers disputants, allowing them to create agreements, while litigation requires disputants to passively accept the -judgment …

The findings of the Arcata Police Stress Survey have produced a variety of important discoveries. These results can not only be used to help reduce the stress experienced by APD personnel, but can also help create awareness amongst the public and governmental sectors. Above all, this research directs the attention of its readers to three major facets of police stress: levels and groups experiencing stress, sources of stress, and coping strategies. First, stress levels within APD reveal that the majority of personnel are experiencing moderate to high levels of stress. In particular, one group stands out and illicits attention. Those …

In 1959, political scientist David Truman described the complexity of congressional leadership: "Everyone knows something of leaders and leadership of various sorts, but no one knows very much. Leadership, especially in the political realm, unavoidably or by design often is suffused .by an atmosphere of the mystic and the magical, and these have been little penetrated by systematic observation" (Truman, 1959, p. 94). House leadership remains a complex concept, but it has been defined more clearly and more systematically in the years· since Truman's observation.

African-Americans, with their traditionally African features, have always had an uneasy coexistence with the European (white) ideal of beauty. According to Angela M. Neal and Midge L. Wilson, "Compared to Black males, Black females have been more profoundly affected by the prejudicial fallout surrounding issues of skin color, facial features, and hair. Such impact can be attributed in large part to the importance of physical attractiveness for all women" (328). For black women, the most easily controlled feature is hair. While contemporary black women sometimes opt for cosmetic surgery or colored contact lenses, hair alteration (i.e., hair-straightening "permanents," hair weaves, …

The Government of India and the United States Agency for International Development began the Innovations in Family Planning Services Project (IFPS) in Uttar Pradesh under the management of the State Innovations in Family Planning Services Agency (SIFPSA). The goal was to reduce the fertility rate in Uttar Pradesh by accelerating family planning (FP) services at the district level through innovative approaches. IFPS’s main objectives were to increase access to FP services, improve the quality of FP services, and promote contraceptive use. While the details and particularities of his ideas may not be compatible with today's unsettled and transitory world, what he strove and quested for is as applicable today as it was at the beginning of the modem state system. According to the interviews with successful women in nationally and internationally renowned companies/organizations in the sports world, there were ten concepts discussed most frequently in reference to how women succeed in this particular male-dominated field. From December 1994 through March 1995, the D2T2M consulting group took a serious look at the future of Civic Stadium and its position in the regional community. This study was prepared for the Portland Metropolitan Sports Authority.

In an effort to develop a series of alternative scenarios on the future of Civic Stadium the group conducted an exhaustive series of interviews and a national data search. These interviews included financial experts, event promoters, current tenants, city and regional officials, stadium experts, concerned citizens and others.

The individual and departmental factors affecting graduate students' professional socialization were studied by employing data from 309 PhD students in 16 graduate programs in sociology. Using Rosenbaum's tournament model of opportunity structures and aspects of Tinto's model of social psychological integration, this study examines students' access to initial funding, resources in the department, indicators of prior ability, current professional activities, mentoring processes, and social psychological factors for their effects on socialization into the academic profession. Access to initial funding and to mentoring have substantial effects on PhD students' professional socialization, but prove to be less than rational processes in the …
