It takes whole villages and it takes all members of the community, regardless of race, creed, color, neighborhood for that village to be whole. People need unimpeded access to that wholeness.

Take a look at that chart (see Figure 1). Perhaps in this room there is a rather nonrepresentative sample of people who, if I say, "Are you a youth development professional?" will say, "yes." When you tell people what you do, how many people use that term or something close to it when they describe what they do? Two. How many use "youth worker?" Four. As we examine and explore the programs that we will be developing in our agencies and organizations, one of the factors in the program development process is examining youth age characteristics. The developmental stages of youth have been examined in a variety of ways by educators and research analysts. We will explore the stages of youth development as taken from, The Primary Program: Growing and Learning in the Heartland (1993). This is a primary level education curriculum developed by the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Area Education Agencies and the Nebraska Office of Child Development-Department of Education.

Marlene Wilson devotes an entire chapter of her book, Survival Skills for Managers, to the topic of creativity. It is because she feels that it is central to the survival of individuals, organizations, and society. A Comparison Of Protective Service Workers' Perceptions Of Ritual And Sexual Abuse In Children: An Exploratory Study, Cathleen A. Lewandowski

Social Work Faculty Publications

This article compares protective service workers' perceptions of sexual abuse to their percepons of ritual abuse. Perceptual elements examined include the type of problem the abuse is for victims, difficulties encountered when investigating an allegation, treatment and assessment resources available in their communities, and a comparison of their definitions of sexual and ritual abuse. The professional community has not reached a consensus on the ritual abuse controversy. Perceptions found in the literature range from the presentation of ritual abuse as a serious social problem that is distinctly different from sexual abuse to a consideration of the ritual abuse phenomenon as …

The right of the public to know and the right of the individual to be let alone are inherently in conflict. The origins of these rights are quite different: the former derived from the First Amendment's protection of a free press, the latter in a law journal article published in the late nineteenth century. So, too, has the development of these ideas followed different paths: the former as Constitutional law, the latter as tort law. This article examines the relationship between privacy law and the press. A century ago two lawyers called for legal relief from aggressive newspaper reporters. At …

The chapter addresses a number of important methodologic issues that are relevant to occupational-stress researchers. The issues addressed have arisen in the context of an ongoing research program involving cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of stress in teachers; the issues, however, apply to occupational research in general. The first issue involves measurement strategies required in operationalizing the stress process. The focal concern is the reduction of confounding in measures of the work environment. The second issue encompasses the question of whether to sample new or veteran workers. The third issue applies to types of job stressors. The chapter describes a …

An Overview Of Parallel Distributed Processing, Jonathan P. Heyl

Modern Psychological Studies

Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP), or Connectionism, is a frontier cognitive theory that is currently garnering considerable attention from a variety of fields. Briefly summarized herein are the theoretical foundations of the theory, the key elements observed in creating simulation computer programs, examples of its applications, and some comparisons with other models of cognition. A majority of the information is culled from Rumelhart and McClelland's (1986) two volume introduction to the theory, while some concerns from the field and the theorists' accompanying responses are taken from a 1990 article by Hanson and Burr.
