Self-Employment In Vocational Rehabilitation Building On Lessons From Rural America, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute
Self-Employment In Vocational Rehabilitation Building On Lessons From Rural America, Nancy Arnold Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute
Employment
With this document, the Research and Training Center on Rural Rehabilitation Services prompts us to think anew about the possibilities of self-employment. Self-employment is a part of the American dream. People are drawn to the notion of working for themselves in a way they are not attracted to working for someone else. Americans think of self-employment as a way to control their own futures and to make work more fulfilling. Self-employment is individualistic, but also has a strong connection to the cultural make-up of the country. It stresses independence and self-sufficiency, but is also believed to promote economic vitality for …

Ocean Transport Of Containerized Liner Cargo In The United States-Mexico Trade, Carl Joseph Williams
Ocean Transport Of Containerized Liner Cargo In The United States-Mexico Trade, Carl Joseph Williams
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Commerce between the United States and Mexico will continue to grow due to the incremental benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement. This growth, however, will be slowed at least temporarily by the recent Mexican Peso crisis. Ocean transportation currently only moves about 8.5 percent of US-Mexico cargo by value even though it is the most efficient mode of transport over longer distances. This study hypothesized that the underutilized ocean transport sector has captured significant high-growth general cargo that is amenable to containerized transport from the air and/or trucking and rail sectors of the US-Mexico trade. Historical and ex …
Preliminary Evidence For The Existence Of A Regional Sacbe Across The Northern Maya Lowlands, Scott L. Fedick, D. Reid, Jennifer P. Mathews
Preliminary Evidence For The Existence Of A Regional Sacbe Across The Northern Maya Lowlands, Scott L. Fedick, D. Reid, Jennifer P. Mathews
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
Ancient road systems have often been used by archaeologists to reconstruct interaction and political ties among prehistoric settlements. Roads built by the ancient Maya offer many insights into the political geography of the area, particularly in the northern lowlands where hieroglyphic texts are rare. This study examines ethnohistoric, historic, and archaeological data that suggest that a regional road, some 300 km in length, once spanned the northern lowlands from the modern location of Mérida to the east coast facing the island of Cozumel. The political implications of such a road, if it once existed, are discussed.

"I will not mince my words. We live at a precarious moment in history. Relations of subjection, suffering, dispossession, and contempt for human dignity and the sanctity of life are at the center of social existence. Emotional dislocation, moral sickness and individual helplessness remain a ubiquitous feature of our time. Our much heralded form of democracy has become, unbeknownst to many Americans, subverted by its contradictory relationship to the very object of it address; human freedom, social justice, and a tolerance and respect for difference. In the current historical juncture, discourses of democracy continue to masquerade as disinterested solicitations, and …

Preface
National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs
The University of Northern Iowa's Youth Leadership Studies program was established to foster professionalism in the youth development field through the encouragement of creative and research activities. One major endeavor toward that end has been the conduct of an annual National Youth Leadership Symposium. Begun in 1990, the Symposium has served as a working conference that focuses on solving practical problems for the emerging profession. The purpose of the Symposium is to serve as an agent of change by raising questions, examining circumstances, making decisions and taking actions that realize that common ground and agreement needed to contribute to the …

If youth development is a profession, then it follows that the attitudes and skills needed by youth workers should be similar across specific program settings. This session explored this assumption by discussing the staff competencies needed for quality service delivery. First, lessons from ongoing "cross-program" research were discussed and then a panel composed of a variety of youth serving organization discussed similarities and differences in essential staff competencies.

Youth development as a profession was discussed in terms of staff competencies in the panel that discussed best practices (Creating a Foundation: Principles of Practice). During this session about community perspectives, a panel of community youth development professionals discussed their perspectives of the profession and their successes in the youth development area. In addition, the audience was engaged in discourse about topics presented throughout the Symposium. The following is an edited version of the transcript of that panel discussion.
Why Youth Participate In Youth Programs, Rudy D. Jones
Why Youth Participate In Youth Programs, Rudy D. Jones
National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs
Do you think you have great programs, yet youth are not participating? Are they staying away because they do not know or cannot afford to come? Or do they not come because they do not want to? This session explored reasons youth do not participate in different programs or activities and examined strategies to encourage their involvement. Approaches for identifying and accommodating youth needs were presented. Why are we here at the Symposium? I firmly believe we must address the "whys" and "why nots" before we can more accurately and effectively address the "how to."
The Box Ni Group Of Naranjal, And Early Architecture Of The Maya Lowlands, Jennifer P. Mathews
The Box Ni Group Of Naranjal, And Early Architecture Of The Maya Lowlands, Jennifer P. Mathews
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
The distinctive Early Classic megalithic style of the northern Maya Lowlands did not exist in isolation, but rather shared a number of features with monumental architecture of the central Petén. One particularly striking example is the triadic platform grouping, found at Naranjal as well as Uaxactún and other early sites of the northern and southern lowlands. The temporal and geographic distribution of Maya triadic platform groupings are reviewed in conjunction with such shared architectural features as rounded corners. These comparisons support the early dating ofmegalithic architecture and help define the special characteristics of this northern lowland style.
