Divestiture, By-Pass, Entry, Cross Subsidization: Conflicting Forces In The Deregulation Of The South Dakota Telecommunications Market, Dwight Adamnson, Jack Triweiler

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This study reviews the impact the divestiture of AT&T had on the South Dakota telecommunications market, and explains the technological changes that have occurred and how these changes have been translated into lower costs. The South Dakota telecommunications market is examined under the scenarios: 1) fully regulated; 2) partial regulation; and 3) unregulated market. ARIMA procedures are used to forecast changes in revenues under the two different regulatory schemes. The degree of contestability of the South Dakota Telecommunications market is investigated to determine if competitions is suitable for the unregulated scenario. The study argues that the market is competitive.

Two Comparisons Of Rural Public Television Viewers And Nonviewers In, Will Norton Jr., John W. Windhauser, Susan Langdon Norton

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

A study of public television viewers in Oxford, Mississippi, in 1977 and 1989 found both consistency and differences in viewing patterns. In both periods, viewers watched television in general about six hours a day. But viewers of all education levels were much more likely to watch public television in 1989 than in 1977, when watchers tended to be those with higher levels of education. The amount of time spent watching public television inched up in 1989, and there is evidence that viewers assimilated public television more into their regular viewing. Winona Campus Life

Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

Probably the most famous halftime speech ever given was the Knute Rockne, "Win One for the Gipper" classic, which many of us have seen delivered by Pat O'Brien in "The Knute Rockne Story." It is remembered as well because the Gipper was played by the somnambulant President of the United States who incessantly evoked its memory for whatever feeble cause he was pushing. As motivational speeches go this one has no peer.

The Anchor: 1992

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Massachusetts has undergone radical changes in its racial/ethnic composition in the last ten years. The Latino population, owing to its extraordinary growth rate during the last two decades, is the largest racial/ethnic minority group in the state. Yet relatively little is known about this population because of the "information gap." Based on 1990 census data, this article focuses on the growth and geographical distribution of Latinos in Massachusetts. It considers the undercount of Latinos, the growth of Latinos in the commonwealth from a national perspective, and assesses the increase of Latinos in the New England states. The Cost Of Home Ownership In Vermont, 1975-1990, Arthur G. Woolf

Housing prices in Vermont, like those in the other New England states, shot up dramatically during the economic boom of the 1980s. This article investigates the causes of that price increase and focuses on the cost of home ownership in Vermont in the years 1975 to 1990. Cost of home ownership is defined as the percentage of family income needed to finance an average-price home. Although prices skyrocketed during the 1980s, the actual cost of home ownership as a percentage of income was about 15 percent greater in 1990 than it was during the mid-1970s. Boston Harbor earned a widespread reputation as "the dirtiest harbor in the nation" during the 1988 presidential campaign. Well before that campaign began, though, efforts were under way to reduce the amount of pollution entering the harbor. The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority was created in 1985 to undertake a massive public works program — including construction of a 1.3 billion-gallon-per-day sewage treatment plant and a sludge fertilizer processing plant — to end the decades-old practice of dumping sewage wastes into the ocean. The program will also cause water and sewer charges to rise dramatically during a fifteen-year period.

The selection of a new university president, an event of major importance in academic life, is usually filled with tensions on the part of those concerned about its outcome. The 1992 presidential search at the University of Massachusetts exemplifies such tensions. There were mixed reactions to the overall performance. When they finished reviewing candidates, the search committee had eliminated all but Michael K. Hooker, who, they deemed, has the necessary competence, vision, and stature for the task.
