Abduction In Annotated Logic Programming, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

The author investigates techniques to make the logic programming paradigm more expressive for knowledge representation, while simultaneously retaining the computational advantages of efficiency and simplicity. He extends the annotated language of K. Thirunarayan and K. Kifer (1989) in various directions to obtain an enriched representation language. In particular, rule bodies are permitted to be a conjunction of literals, and the rules to be recursive. A class of annotated logic programs called the stratified programs is identified which can be given a unique supported minimal Herbrand model as their meaning. Abductive reasoning is integrated into this annotated logic framework. The notion …

71125: Fifty Years of Silence and B 11226: Fifty Years of Silence, Artists' Books on the Holocaust. Purchased with funds from the Jerome and Arlene Gerber Endowment Fund.
The Library recently acquired two limited-edition artists' books in which Holocaust survivors Eva and Eugene Kellner recall their experiences in Nazi concentration camps. The books were designed and printed by their daughter Tatana, who is artistic director ofthe Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, New York.

These four flower books represent a blossoming of attractive popular books describing prairie plants. Each of these four books has a slightly different goal. In terms of area covered, Farrar focuses on Nebraska, Vance, Jowsey and Mclean consider plants of the northern Great Plains, Freeman and Schofield aim at roadside wildflowers of the southern Plains, and Runkel and Roosa on wildflowers of the northern tallgrass prairie. The types of plants included vary also. Farrar includes both common and rare Nebraska wildflowers but no shrubs or trees, Vance et al. include common native wildflowers, visible introduced species, and some woody plants. …

Perception/Action: An Holistic Approach, John M. Flach

A general systems approach is taken to studying the emergent properties of the human perception/action system. Two task domains, the control of locomotion and the recognition of objects, are used to study human performance. The locomotion task involves the control of altitude. Experiments are described that will manipulate the type of texture, the speed of forward motion, and altitude. A general hypothesis is presented that performance in the altitude control task is a function of the signal-to-noise ratio within the flow field--where signal refers to optical activity resulting from change of altitude and noise refers to optical activity resulting from …
