The role of shame in the lives of people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is examined. Although some will argue that shame can be healthy, it can also be destructive, resulting in immense suffering and dysfunction. Shame is defined as existing not only within an individual, but in families, communities, societies, and nations. This work is heavily documented with supporting materials from sociologists, social workers, psychologists, and historians; as well as the author's personal experience as a woman of Puerto Rican/Taino Indian descent. This thesis is a beginning of appraisal of programs in Humboldt County designed to facilitate the adjustment of adult Southeast Asian Lao-Hmong refugees to the host culture and Humboldt County community, examined from the perspective of social psychology and application of Naomi Golan's (1981) strategies for transitions of persons who have experienced radical changes in their life structure. The assessment focuses on the purpose and methods of assistance, and the difficulties and successes encountered in aiding the Hmong in their adjustment to American culture, from the viewpoint of the assistance programs. PREFACE: I would have to cite the five months I spent in Cork, Ireland as the biggest motivating factor behind this paper. I knew next to nothing about Northern Ireland before this period. Soon after my arrival in Cork, however, I became fascinated with the socio-religious anomaly to the north of me. This chapter discusses simulation estimation methods that overcome the computational intractability of classical estimation of limited dependent variable models with flexible correlation structures in the unobservable stochastic terms. These difficulties arise because of the need to evaluate accurately very high dimensional integrals. The methods based on simulation do not require the exact evaluation of these integrals and hence are feasible using computers of even moderate power. I first discuss a series of ideas that had been used in efforts to circumvent these computational problems by employing standard numerical analysis approximation methods. The martingale-equivalence condition delivered by a non-arbitrage assumption in complete asset markets has implications for fine-time-unit asset price behavior that can be rejected with finite spans of data. Most institutional and individual portfolios are very undiversified in real estate: many hold no real estate at all, many have holdings highly concentrated in certain regions or types of real estate. The risk of these concentrated holdings is not hedged. We propose here that cash-settled futures and options markets be opened on real estate to better allow diversification and hedging, and show that these markets solve problems that have hampered other real estate hedging media in the past. This thesis attempts to combine the elements of oral interpretation and rhetoric in order to create a group performance piece that contains interesting movement and dialogue as well as persuasive rhetorical elements. This new genre of group oral interpretation is called Rhetorical Theatre and implements only non-fictional material for the manuscript. Metaphoric blocking and direction is discussed, as well as the use of other conventions currently employed in group interpretation.

An explanation of oral tradition and its portent for language clarifies the fairy tale genre. Its purpose, various cultural impacts, criticism and limitations are introduced. Ludwig and Wilhelm Grimm translated their personal interest into a form of speech that endures past cultural and linguistic barriers. The Grimms' scholastic credentials and lifework reveal the original storytellers and subjects in a historical/geographical framework. Part II isolates 68 tales of animal dialogue, discusses human-like character responses of help and harm, and submits a brief narrative criticism of the conglomerate rhetorical entity. However, by the mid 1980's it was apparent that the state was not so much reforming society as society was drastically altering the state. The purpose of this thesis is to examine some of the various non-monetary effects on inflation within the framework of the price-gap model. Some of the non-monetary shocks that can affect inflation include wage adjustments, changes in basic commodity prices (for example, crude oil), changes in the exchange rates, and shifts in inflationary expectations.

The purpose of this study was to determine sex equity compliance and sex equity achievement in athletic programs in grades 5-8 and 9-12 attendance centers in the eight county area served by Illinois Educational Service Center #13. Champaign, Douglas, Ford, Iroquois, Kankakee, Livingston, Piatt, and Vermilion Counties were included in the study. An 18 question survey instrument, keyed to the 1990 Illinois Sex Equity Rules, was sent to building administrators in all attendance centers in the eight county area that contained grades 5-8 and/or 9-12. Independent living centers (ILCs) provide support services to adults with physical disabilities. Originally created through federal funding, most ILCs serve urban areas, leaving a large rural area and its population unreached by independent living ideas or services. Data on the expansion of the ILC service model to rural areas are presented. The need for further program development is discussed. 0ne third of the U.S. population lives outside of a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (Korte, 1983) and 26% live in towns with less than 2,500 inhabitants (Bureau of the Census, 1970 as cited in Photiadis & Simoni, 1983).
