A survey of child care arrangements for Nebraska preschool children was conducted in 1988 by the Center for Applied Urban Research (now, Center for Public Affairs Research), University of Nebraska at Omaha, under the direction of Dr. Christine Reed. The purposes of the survey were to document the characteristics of the child care arrangements used in 1988 by Nebraska parents with preschool-age children and to identify household characteristics associated with the different types of child care that parents chose.

The College World Series began in 1947. But it did not have a national television contract until 1980, when ESPN agreed to carry some of the games.

Since then college baseball, and specifically the College World Series, has experienced a popularity explosion. That popularity increase can be directly attributed to ESPN.

The question, "Does the message of the Blacksburg Manifesto fit the times that we are in now and the times that seem to be shaping up in the next decade or longer?" is addressed by epistemologically locating the Blacksburg Manifesto and by introducing the postmodern debate to the field of public administration. The well-known Blacksburg Manifesto is described as an example of high modernism, beyond the functionalist paradigm, because although the central commitment is to reason and progress, the classic forms of administrative rationality are surpassed. Reliability And Construct Validity Of An Adjective Rating Scale Of Concept Of God, James D. Fischer

The reliability and construct validity of Gorsuch's (1968) adjective rating scale of concept of God (COG) was investigated. Two separate samples of 72 and 197 participants were utilized to complete four statistical analyses: (a) test-retest reliability was computed on a sample of 120 participants; (b) measures of internal consistency were computed providing coefficient alpha's for each scale of the COG; (c) the COG was correlated with the Spiritual Well-Being scale, the Spiritual Maturity Index, the Religious Orientation Scale, and the Spiritual Distress Scale; (d) a confirmatory factor analysis was completed hypothesizing both a one- and four-factor model. This article describes a proposed social justice curriculum and presents a case study of attempts to establish it in a graduate school of social work. The study is set in the context of the history of activism in social work and an analysis of societal and professional forces which may inhibit such activism. The rationale for a specialization in social justice is discussed along with the process and politics and developing the program and seeking its acceptance. The article describes specific types of resistance to a social change curriculum and possible strategies for dealing with such resistance.

The purpose of this research was to determine whether whole wheat and lentils, food staples consumed in the Middle East, will exhibit delayed protein complementation when fed in alternating meals. Lentils are limiting in sulfur containing amino acids, especially methionine, while whole wheat is limiting in lysine, and when these proteins are fed together they supplement one another.

Sixty male, Sprague-Dawley weanling rats were divided into six diet groups with ten in each group as follows: diets fed ad libitum; wheat, lentils, wheat and lentils combined; diets pair-fed; wheat and lentils combined, wheat alternating with lentils, lentils alternating with wheat. …

While the campaigns of the New Christian Right on abortion, affirmative action, school prayer and other issues have been well documented, little is known about the movement's attitude towards state welfare programs. Identifying three distinctive sources of fundamentalist antipathy to the welfare state, this paper seeks to draw attention to interesting although unconventional ideas about social welfare that should be recognized and understood by scholars concerned with the study of social policy.

Social Work has been embedded in a structural and ideological contradiction throughout its history. The profession, its employing institutions, and the problems confronted by its clients are all produced by the same political economy that pays its workers and supports its schools. Ideologically, the profession has avoided the confrontation implied by its dependency upon individual defect explanatory or causal analysis frameworks that constitute a betrayal of its real constituencies. An advocacy! empowerment paradigm is offered as an alternative.

Applying The Fishbein-Ajzen Theory Of Reasoned Action To A Study Of Message Impacts On Responses To A Health Risk, Robert J. Griffin, Kurt Neuwirth, Sharon Dunwoody

A laboratory experiment, using a 2x2x2x2 design, investigated the effects of four characteristics of risk news stories on behavioral beliefs about risk. Based on the Fishbein-Ajzen Theory of Reasoned Action, amended to include perceived behavioral control, we expected that changes in these cognitive structural variables would alter attitudes toward actions taken to alleviate risk, and that attitudinal change would affect intention to take subsequent action. Results indicate that information about risk probability affected the behavioral belief that drinking infested tap water would lead to personal illness. This belief combined with other components of cognitive structure to affect attitudes toward drinking …
