An Examination Of The Efficacy Of Shelter Residence In Empowering Battered Women, Janette Bizzell

This study was an effort to provide a research basis from which to judge domestic violence shelter programs' effectiveness in empowering battered women. The instrument used to gather statistical information was the Survey for Residential Clients of Shelters for Women CSRCSW>, a 20-item, self-report questionnaire, designed to measure empowerment at pretest and posttest intervals. The subjects were 25 battered women who were sheltered at The Women's Center, in St . Charles, Missouri, from 21 to 30 days. These women participated in an intensive, highly-structured program geared toward independent living , and empowerment, defined as the renewed ability to act …

Changes In A Prairie Bird Population From 1940 To 1989, Neil P. Bernstein, Kristine K. Baker, Sherry R. Wilmot

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We repeated a bird census of a prairie/field community that was done by Kendeigh (1941) in 1940. Changes in the bird populations were compared with changes in vegetation, agricultural land use for the county, and trends in urbanization. Grassland birds did decline in abundance due to causes similar to those cited in other studies. The increase in forest and edge nesting species was more unusual to this study, and probably correlated with the woody succession that had occurred.

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has devised a doctrine called equitable
discretion to screen congressional-plaintiff suits. The Author argues that the doctrine should be abandoned. She proposes that the courts be guided by existing standng principles in deciding whether to hear these cases.

He Sowed So That Others Could Reap: Niels Ebbesen Hansen 1866 -1950, J. Christian Bay

The Bridge

January 4 punctuates two events. On that date in 1851 type-setting began for the printing of a new novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. On the same date in 1866 a boy was born on a farm near Ribe, Denmark, who in baptism in the cathedral was named Niels Ebbesen Hansen. The baptismal vessel used had passed from one generation to the next for over 200 years and had the ring of old Danish silver.

This issue of SEEDS describes a project that was started in 1985 to encourage the growth of a new agricultural sector, dairy farming, in Thailand. While the major aim of the project was to increase incomes of rural families in the Muek-Lek Land Reform Area in Saraburi Province, Central Thailand, it also sought to integrate women into dairying activities, and offer these women, whether married or single, access to credit. Body mass of adult female and male sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) increased an average of 17 and 20%, respectively, from early September to late October on staging areas in central North Dakota and varied by year. Increases in body mass averaged 550 and 681 g among female and male G. c. canadensis, respectively, and 616 and 836 g among female and male G. c. rowani. Adult and juvenile G. c. rowani were lean at arrival, averaging 177 and 83 g of fat, respectively, and fat reserves increased to 677 and 482 g by mid-October. Fat-free dry …

The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine how a meaning-centered approach versus a code-centered approach affects student performance: (a) in the teaching of language arts; (b) in regular education classrooms containing low achieving, low socio-economic, multi-ethnic, and learning handicapped students; (c) in grades one, three and six; and (d) in the first year implementation of the California English-Language Arts Framework. In our culture as well as other cultures, there are social norms that are prescribed and expected to be followed. If an individual does not act in accordance with these social norms, there are often consequences. In Edgerton's (1971) article, "Anthropology, Psychiatry, and Man's Nature," he states, "Sometimes, of course, the sanctions against deviant behavior are supernatural, consisting of immediate and horrible punishment by gods, spirits, ancestors or the like" (p. 45). In present day culture in the United States, the researcher contends that there are both traditional and modern belief systems that serve to ostracize the stigmatized deviant.
