Gesturing In An Interview Situation : Effects Of Gender, Renee R. Tillinger

Subjects observed a prerecorded job interview of a male or a female applicant whose gesturing was either broad (hands/arms moving away from the body), narrow (hands/arms moving close to the body), or not used (hands folded on lap). Subjects then completed evaluations on the applicant and the type of gesturing used. Results suggest that in placing individuals in jobs, women stereotype both men and women according to the type of gesturing used. Men, on the other hand, stereotype only men according to the type of gesturing used, but stereotyped women regardless of the type of gesturing used. Implications of this …

Australia's live sheep trade to Middle Eastern countries is an important export industry. However, about 2 per cent of the sheep die, mainly during the sea voyage. The Western Australian Department of Agriculture has conducted a major research programme to improve the health and welfare of sheep during live export. The programme has'examined many aspects of the export sheep industry, and a substantial part of it has focused on why sheep die during sea transport.

We heard this afternoon about the challenge., presented by both the changing demographics and the changing realities of adolescence in this country. The application of recombinant DNA technology to plant breeding promises important applications in agriculture and advances in many plant science disciplines. Gene transfer at the molecular level can be routinely accomplished in an increasing number of plant species. For many of the world's important crops, new methods or refinements of proven methods will be needed and are being developed. Experience with gene regulation in transgenic plants is accumulating in many laboratories around the world. Small proteinaceous inhibitors (Mr<20,000) of the digestive serine proteinases of animals and microorganisms are found as moderately abundant proteins in storage organs and leaves of many plant genera. The proteins are powerful inhibitors of the digestive enzymes of plant predators and therefore are considered to be part of the array of defensive chemicals of plants. Proteinase inhibitor genes show excellent promise, using DNA technology, to manipulate plant genomes to express these biologically active proteins in order to improve natural defense systems. Members of two unrelated families of serine proteinase inhibitors found in tomato and potato plants, called Inhibitor I (monomer Mr 8000) and Inhibitor II (monomer Mr 12,300), are under both environmental and developmental regulation in different tissues of the plants. Genes coding for wound-inducible Inhibitors I and II have been isolated from both tomato and potato genomes and characterized. Tobacco plants have been transformed with the chimeric genes containing wound-inducible promoters fused with the reporter gene, chloramphenicol acetyl transferase, to assess promoter function and signal transmission. Transacting factors that regulate their expression in response to wounding are also being identified and purified. Intact genes are being employed to transform agriculturally important crop plants to determine their potential usefulness to enhance defensive capabilities of plants against herbivores and pathogens.

From 1983 co 1985, more than 1,000 channel catfish (Icatalurus punctatus) were sampled with rotenone from 50 streams and rivers in Iowa to assess differences in population densities, standing stocks, viral statistics, age and growth, and habitat use Catfish densities ranged from 5 fish/ha in sites on the South Skunk and Upper Iowa Rivers to more than 4,400 fish/ha at a site on the Thompson Fork of the Grand River. Climatic change will lead to changes in the carbon dioxide C0_2, temperature, and precipitation. There have been many predictions of the effect of climatic change on plant growth but none on the soil parameters or water use. To fully understand the implications on soil management from climate change the expected changes in soil temperature, water use, and water and nutrient use efficiency need quantification.

Radon Measurements In Houses In Eastern And Central Iowa, C. V. Weiffenbach, T. J. Hart

Radon concentrations in air in main floor areas of 213 houses in Central and Eastern Iowa were measured with alpha track detectors integrating over periods of five months to one year. Forty-two houses in Central Iowa had significantly higher radon concentrations (lognormal distribution with geometric mean 2.1 pCi/L, geometric standard deviation 2.2, and arithmetic mean 2.75 pCi/L) than 171 houses studied in Eastern Iowa (geometric mean 1.6 pCi/L, geometric standard deviation 2.2, arithmetic mean 2.1 pCi/L). The Effect Of Harvesting On Macrophyte Regrowth And Water Quality In Ladue Reservoir, Ohio, G. Dennis Cooke, Angela B. Martin, Robert E. Carlson

Two experiments in a bay of LaDue Reservoir (Geauga Co., northeastern Ohio) during summer, 1985 demonstrated that removal of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) root crowns with an aquatic weed harvester retarded plant regrowth to quantities well below nuisance levels for 28 days. Nearly summer-long control was achieved following a "touch-up" harvest on day 42. In contrast, the harvester was used in this bay in 1982 to "mow" milfoil, leaving intact "stumps." The mowed plants regrew to preharvest and control area biomass levels within 23 days. The difference in plant regrowth between these two methods strongly suggests that user dissatisfaction …

Plant Parasitic Fungi Of Four Tallgrass Prairies Of Northern Iowa: Distribution And Prevalence, Lois H. Tiffany, Judy F. Shearer, George Knaphus

Throughout the 1980's, most intensively during the past five years, collections of fungal parasites of prairie plants have been made at various times of the growing season from four prairie preserves, Cayler, Freda Haffner Kettlehole, Hayden, and Stinson prairies, in northern Iowa. A total of 216 species of parasitic fungi were collected on 129 prairie plant hosts. Ninety-nine of the fungi were not previously documented from Iowa. Also, fungus species previously reported were found on 72 host species not included in earlier records.

Family Communication Patterns: Measuring Intra-Personal Perceptions Of Inter-Personal Relationships, L. David Ritchie, Mary Anne Fitzpatrick

Mass communication researchers interested in family communication have traditionally assumed that family norms are shared by all family members, and apparent disagreement has been ascribed to instrument unreliability rather than to the influence of family structure. A survey of 308 adolescent children and their parents, using the Family Communication Pattern (FCP) instrument, yields evidence of systematic patterns of disagreement between mothers and fathers as well as between parents and children. These results suggest that future theories of family communication cannot ignore the influence of intra-familial conflict and power relationships on communication norms and habits.

From the introduction: "The goal of this paper is to present evidence for Possessor Ascension in Dakota Sioux. In this construction, a nominal which is semantically a possessor is syntactically not a constituent of the noun phrase, but rather a constituent of the clause. I first discuss the universal characterization of Possessor Ascension from within the framework of Relational Grammar and give an introduction to the ways possession is expressed in Sioux. The fundamental basis of William James's psychology - the rock-bottom foundation on which it is constructed - is "the stream of thought" or "the stream of consciousness. " ¹* The first and preeminent characteristic of our flowingly continuous experience of "thought" or "consciousness," James (1890/1983d) said, is that it is personal (pp. 220-224). Every thought, every psychological experience, is mine, or hers, or his, or yours.
