The pressure to control hospital costs has had, and will continue to have, an impact on the funding of health sciences libraries. The concept of fees-for-services has been frequently posed as a means of generating revenue. But, there is very little data available on the effect fees would have on the demand for library services. The purpose of this study was to query the users of computer literature searching and interlibrary loan services at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa in an attempt to ascertain the feasibility of charging fees for these services as a means of producing revenue for …

Domestic Violence: Physicians A Link To Prevention, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Domestic violence may result in more injuries and fatalities for women than automobile crashes, muggings, and rapes combined, but according to a recent editorial, physicians largely ignore the problem. Evidence showed that a majority of women treated at an emergency facility for injuries resulting from violent acts of spouses or other persons known to the victims were discharged without any arrangement being made for their future safety. Physicians rarely inquired about an injury victim's past sexual or physical abuse, living arrangements, or future prospects of safety.

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The 1990 National Youth Leadership Symposium was a strong first step for the University of Northern Iowa's program to lead the examination of important content issues for youth serving organizations. The inaugural symposium has set traditions for an annual event while initiating a research and reporting sequence in support of the youth leadership profession. These are exciting new activities to enhance an often overlooked but important field of endeavor. One of the key challenges and targeted purposes of the annual Symposium is to foster awareness, responsiveness, and advocacy to the youth leadership profession.

The shut down of federal programs in early October because of the inability of Congress, and the President to establish spending priorities was just another reminder that the financing of society's needs now and in the future is going to take planning and collaboration. This joy is the possibility of our being in the presence of animals for "(t)he armadillo has some intention to pursue in the palm forest." The present article examines a concern I have had for some time about the compatibility of humanistic psychology with the emerging animal rights movement. Beyond working out my position, the paper has the additional educational and, frankly, political purpose of bringing animal rights issues to the attention of humanistic psychologists.

The article applies certain concepts of contemporary animal rights philosophy, notably "speciesism," to both the philosophy of humanism and humanistic psychology. While on a philosophical level, certain concepts are discussed that would likely block a rapprochement, I feel that humanistic psychologists as individuals are likely to extend their compassion to …

Philosophically, this revolution entails a significant revision in traditional ways of conceiving our mod obligations to other creatures.
