Carlos Bulosan's "personal history" has evidenced remarkable staying power, and that mainly in the Asian American ethnic communities and the academic programs which describe and support them. This is all the more remarkable in a book that has been damned by Philippine critics for giving a distorted view of the Philippines, and by American critics for distorting the history of the Filipino in America. This book might have worked out as an article, but it was a gross mistake in book form. That is to say, on the development of what Melhem calls the "heroic voice" there might have been an intelligent and informative study of about article length. I can't be certain, however, that Melhem had a definite sense of her subject, because "voice" sometimes means "prosody," sometimes "form," sometimes "subject" (or "theme"), most often (possibly!), "style."

Powers' collection of seven essays (mostly about Lakota culture) is of great value to students of Native American Studies. They vary in approach and topic from ethnomusicology to art, religion, and psychology. In his preface Powers pays tribute to Levi-Strauss' structuralist theory and its usefulness to American Indian cultural studies. But Powers qualifies his tribute by suggesting that because structuralism has its limitations, eclecticism is more appropriate for his purposes.

The Popularity Of Integration Models, 1980-1985, James D. Foster

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Farnsworth’s five integration models were used to categorize integration articles published in the Journal of Psychology and Theology between 1980 and 1985. In addition, the graduate education of article authors was examined to determine if educational background influenced integration approach. Of the 177 articles reviewed, 52 reported research and 76 were considered integration articles. Results of the review indicate that one integration model accounts for nearly two-thirds of the integration work presented in JPT during this period and that differences in educational preparation do not produce preferences for particular integration approaches.

The Importance Of Interstate Highways To Economic Development In Nebraska, David M. Ambrose, Louis G. Pol

This chapter focuses on one aspect of economic growth: the post-construction effect of interstate highways on income and sales expansion. Using data for all Nebraska and Iowa counties, interstate highways are found to have the most positive economic impact on areas with larger populations; small areas are not likely to experience much more than short-term gains. This finding has significant implications for the planned construction of a north-south, four-lane highway in Nebraska. The route of such a highway should be selected only after a careful look at the ability of local areas to capitalize on highway-induced growth impulses.

Taxing and spending decisions made by Nebraska's policy makers have different impacts on Nebraska's metropolitan and nonmetropolitan counties, even though these impacts may be unintended. Furthermore, Nebraska's counties are linked through the operation of state government. Through their fiscal actions policy makers can strengthen these links or cause them to deteriorate. Policy makers should begin to incorporate the geographic dimensions of their decisions into their decision making processes, especially as they are faced with issues concerning property tax relief and rural development. A review of the day care arrangements made by working parents for their preschoolers indicates that the majority use home day care - in the home of a relative, friend, neighbor, or family day care home proprietor. Medicare was established in 1965 under Title XVIII of the Social Security Act. It was originally meant to eliminate the financial barriers to medical care for the aged. It has been called a form of national health insurance for persons age 65 and over. But it was deliberately designed in a manner to avoid modification of the fee-for-services system that is the basis of American Medical Care (Estes, 1979). As a result, inflation in the cost of care has seriously reduced financial benefits to the beneficiaries and in turn limited the access to medical care by the elderly.

In their efforts to report on the forces that affect Boston's racial climate, the local media have typically focused on the more obvious institutional actors: businesses, city hall, school boards, churches, the courts, neighborhood groups. Enhancing Undergraduate Achievement In Educational Psychology With Instructional Objectives, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Eric Rasmussen, Rosemary Nieto, Cheryl Sims

Publications and Research

Two quasi-experiments were conducted to assess the effects of exposure to instructional objectives on the achievement of undergraduates enrolled in an educational psychology course. Students enrolled in morning and afternoon course sections during the fall semester did not receive objects. Comparable students enrolled in morning and afternoon sections of the course during the subsequent spring semester did. Regression analyses that controlled for age and past achievement indicated that among afternoon classes, exposure to objectives improved performance on the midterm and final exams by at least 7 points. No significant effects were found for the morning classes. It was argued that …

The 1978 Conference on the Research Use and Disposition of Senators' Papers affirmed the value inherent in senatorial papers. In the years since the conference, archivists and senate staff have struggled with preservation and use questions relating to those papers. In a continuing effort to answer such questions, the Dirksen Congressional Center and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) sponsored a conference on congressional papers at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia in 1985.
