Catalogue Of The Living Collection Of The Iowa State University Botany Department Greenhouses, Richard W. Pohl, Deborah Q. Lewis

The Botany Department greenhouses at Iowa State University are a rooftop facility including 17 separate houses, divided into three temperature zones. Some illuminated houses are provided to encourage good plant growth during the winter. One greenhouse is operated as a short-day facility and provided with curtained chambers for short days. Summer cooling of the greenhouses is effected by evaporative coolers.

The living teaching and research collections include over 800 plane taxa, ranging from bryophytes to orchids and composites. Propagation materials, as available, may be provided to other educational institutions for teaching or research.

82-Phase I Archaeological Survey Of The Tanners Ridge Resort Area, Sodus Township, Michigan, Elizabeth B. Garland

Reports of Investigations

The Tanner's Ridge archaeological survey was carried out at the request of Mr. Warren Burke, following a series of telephone conversations and correspondence with the Bureau of History, Michigan Department of State, during the summer and fall of 1987. The author's prior archaeological work (Garland 1984) In the immediate vicinity of the planned resort area suggested the high probability of prehistoric sites at this locale, particularly at elevations above the 100 year flood line.

The Growth Of Service Industries In California 1960-1980, Ayalew Adamu, James G. Strathman

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This paper investigates structural changes in the service economy in California between 1960 and 1980. The service sector is disaggregated into four segments - distributive, business, personal and social - and a model is developed and estimated relating the relative growth of employment in services to changes in economic, demographic and urbanization factors. Substitution and complementary linkages among the service segments, and between these segments and manufacturing are also explored. Our results are consistent with the Fisher-Clark hypothesis, and the general importance of demographic and urbanization factors is also established.
