Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Suspended-Sediment Yield In The Saskatchewan River Basin, Peter Ashmore, T J. Day Sep 1988

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Suspended-Sediment Yield In The Saskatchewan River Basin, Peter Ashmore, T J. Day

Geography & Environment Publications

Long-term suspended-sediment concentration and load records are available for 23 Water Survey of Canada sediment-monitoring stations in the Saskatchewan River basin, where the drainage areas range from 10 to over 300 000 km2. Mean annual sediment yield is greatest in the western Alberta Plains along the Oldman and Red Deer rivers (over 100 t km−2 year−1) and tends to increase downstream along the North and South Saskatchewan rivers until major reservoirs in Saskatchewan intervene. Average sediment concentration shows a pattern of variation similar to that of yield. Temporal aspects of suspended-sediment transport vary along the …

The Power Of Commitment, Chien-Fu Chou, John Geanakoplos Sep 1988

The Power Of Commitment, Chien-Fu Chou, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

History has seen many examples of the lone man — like Christ, Luther, Gandhi, or Hitler — who without initial wealth or position, succeeds in changing the behavior of an entire society, for good or for ill. Whence comes this power. No doubt such leaders have possessed extraordinary ability, and have formulated original ideas with great appeal which others could readily follow. But there is another striking similarity among these leaders; namely their single-minded devotion to their, ideals, and their uncompromising attitude toward those who opposed them, no matter what the personal cost. There is hardly any need to document …

Nonparametric And Distribution-Free Estimation Of The Binary Choice And The Threshold-Crossing Models, Rosa L. Matzkin Sep 1988

Nonparametric And Distribution-Free Estimation Of The Binary Choice And The Threshold-Crossing Models, Rosa L. Matzkin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies the problem of nonparametric identification and estimation of binary threshold-crossing and binary choice models. First, conditions are given that guarantee the nonparametric identification of both the function of exogenous observable variables and the distribution of the random terms. Second, the identification results are employed to develop strongly consistent estimation methods that are nonparametric in both the function of observable exogenous variables and the distribution of the unobservable random variables. The estimators are obtained by maximizing a likelihood function over nonparametric sets of functions. A two-step constrained optimization procedure is devised to compute these estimators.

College Library Friends Groups In New York, New Jersey, And Connecticut, Janet Munch

Publications and Research

Friends of the Library groups are largely undocumented in the professional literature at non doctoral-granting colleges and universities. Through a survey of Friends activities at colleges and universities in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, this study fills a gap in knowledge about these groups.

Profits, Welfare, And Class Position: 1965-1984, Marcus D. Pohlmann Sep 1988

Profits, Welfare, And Class Position: 1965-1984, Marcus D. Pohlmann

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The study utilizes an extended version of a Charles V Hamilton paradigm in order to estimate yearly income transfers between classes in America's system of "welfare state capitalism." Analyzing the period from 1965 to 1984, what becomes most obvious is the substantial annual transfer from the middle/working class to the owning class. The transfer rose to more than $150 billion by 1984-a full 10% of middle/ working class income. Yet when looking at the implications, an interesting paradox emerges. Although the amount of transfer has increased some over the period, it has not grown nearly as fast as the after-tax …
