The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

The fiction of William Burroughs focuses on control and the illusion of personal freedom, a situation JOHN Z. GUZLOWSKI finds reinforced in the author's treatment of the family. A teacher in the English Department of Eastern Illinois University and Editor of Karamu, a poetry and fiction magazine, Guzlowski’s work on recent American fiction has appeared in a variety of journals.

Ways of understanding can at times become ways of avoiding reality and real comprehension. Such was the case in Edith Wharton’s Old New York, as discussed by DAVID A. GODFREY. Currently a lecturer at the …

Review Of Michael Bradshaw, Regions And Regionalism In The United States, Robert Stoddard Oct 1988

Review Of Michael Bradshaw, Regions And Regionalism In The United States, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The terms region and regionalism carry various meanings, so the book's emphasis is not conveyed by just the title. Unfortunately this confusion persists, even after reading the book. ... Nevertheless, the text is written clearly (in British English), the maps are pertinent, the index is helpful, and the various subtopics (see below) are presented succinctly.

After reviewing some familiar regionalizations of United States (e.g., the Census divisions, Trewartha's climatic regions, Zelinsky'S cultural area, and ones in regional geography textbooks), the author does a nice job of describing the historical conditions that produced regional differences within the United States. Also cultural …

Meeting The Patron At The Opac Crossroads: The Reference Librarian As An Online Consultant, Robert A. Aken Oct 1988

Meeting The Patron At The Opac Crossroads: The Reference Librarian As An Online Consultant, Robert A. Aken

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Reference librarians play an important role when users interact with online catalogs. As consultants at the point of interaction they must educate patrons in the use of the machine and demonstrate their role in finding and providing information. Specific areas of consultation are discussed as is the relationship of formal instruction to point-of-use instruction. The librarian's efficiency and filtering roles are emphasized.

A Little Magic With The Cauchy Distribution, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 1988

A Little Magic With The Cauchy Distribution, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The standard Cauchy distribution is completely characterized by theproperty that it has no atmos and is distributionally equivalent under the involution X → – 1/ X , i.e., X ≡ – 1/ X . Since maximum likelihood is invariant to the choice of normalization rule in structural equation estimation this property establishes that the LIML estimator is standard Cauchy in the leading case of a canonical structural equation. This is a proof by identifying characteristics and is a major improvement over the usual apparatus of change of variable methods and reductions by multiple integration. The new approach has applications in …

A New Proof Of Knight's Theorem On The Cauchy Distribution, Peter C.B. Phillips Oct 1988

A New Proof Of Knight's Theorem On The Cauchy Distribution, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We offer a new and straightforward proof of F.B. Knight’s [3] theorem that the Cauchy type is characterized by the fact that it has no atom and is invariant under the involution i : x → –1/ x . Our approach uses the representation X = tan θ where θ is uniform on (–π/2, π/2) when X is standard Cauchy. A matrix generalization of this characterization theorem is also given.

Human Rights, Women, And Third World Development, Winston E. Langley Oct 1988

Human Rights, Women, And Third World Development, Winston E. Langley

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

As part of the effort to inaugurate a new international socio-political order after World War II, international emphasis was given to certain moral and legal entitlements we have come to call human rights. That emphasis initially found its most forceful expression in the Charter of the United Nations, which not only asserts its members' faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, as well as in the equal rights of men and women of all nations, but also recites its members' commitment to employ international machinery for the promotion of the social and economic …

The Professional Communicator: Developing The Speech Communication Core, Reta A. Gilbert, David L. Cornelius Oct 1988

The Professional Communicator: Developing The Speech Communication Core, Reta A. Gilbert, David L. Cornelius

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes the development of a common core curriculum in communication at Eastern Washington University designed to unify undergraduate study across both liberal arts and applied degree tracks. The initiative sought to establish a shared instructional philosophy and foundation of courses that would equip students with essential knowledge, skills, and conceptual abilities for professional communication. The article explains the conceptual bases guiding the design, which included rhetorical theory, social cognition, and action theory, and how these perspectives were integrated into a sequence of five courses. The curriculum emphasizes progression from information processing and observation to interaction strategies, message design, …

Service: Meeting Youth's Need To Be Needed, James C. Kielsmeier, Rich Willits

Special Topics, General

In April 1861, hours after the smoke cleared at Fort Sumpter, the first volunteer military units from the North were organized in preparation for the battle to preserve the Union. They were from Minnesota.

The North Star State is again mobilizing, capturing some of the fresh air of the service movement sweeping the nation, and adding its own populist brand of citizen involvement. Youth service is blooming in America's heartland, and community educators are leading the way.
