Dual Task Performance: The Effects Of Task Emphasis And Ear Of Input, Pamela R. Jordan
Dual Task Performance: The Effects Of Task Emphasis And Ear Of Input, Pamela R. Jordan
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This experiment explored the lateralization of the processing of spatial and verbal information during dual-tasks. This study also investigated the relationship between right ear advantage and spatial ability, degree of handedness, and degree of familial handedness. Thirty-two male subjects performed a spatial rotation task and a dichotic listening task. During half of the dual tasks, subjects concentrated on both tasks equally. During the other half of the dual trials, 16 subjects emphasized the spatial processing task and 16 subjects emphasized the dichotic listening task. The results of this experiment do not support either the independent-hemispheric resources or the task-hemispheric integrity …
The Assessment Of Imagery Scales As Potential Predictors Of The Effectiveness Of Thermal Biofeedback Training, Douglas A. Thomas
The Assessment Of Imagery Scales As Potential Predictors Of The Effectiveness Of Thermal Biofeedback Training, Douglas A. Thomas
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Based on the theories pioneered by Sargent, Green, and Walters (1972) in the treatment of migraine headaches, this study has examined the relationship between imagery skills and thermal biofeedback abilities. A counterbalanced design was used to train subjects to cool and warm their hands. They were also given four imagery tasks - the Betts QMI, Verbalizer-Visualizer questionnaire, Paivio's Task, and Block Design task. The results indicated that subjects were capable of controlling hand temperature changes, and subjects trained initially in cooling were more effective at subsequent hand warming, positive transfer. No transfer was found from warming to cooling. Of the …

Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test Norms For Preadolescents, Donna Homer
Student Work
The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test is an easily administered assessment technique designed to measure immediate memory span and provide a learning curve. It consists of six trials of a 15-word list with an intervening task between Trials 5 and 6 . However, norms were established in France several years ago. To update the norms the AVLT was administered to 236 children between the ages of 9 and 12. The students are representative of preadolescents in a large urban school district. Means and standard deviations are provided for each of seven trials, their repetitions, and additions.
Findings from this study generally …
Communication's Oratorical And Natural Rights Heritage And The Liberal Arts, Stewart Hudson
Communication's Oratorical And Natural Rights Heritage And The Liberal Arts, Stewart Hudson
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article explores the philosophical and historical roots linking communication studies to the liberal arts tradition. Drawing on the oratorical heritage of classical Greece and the natural rights philosophy of early English empiricists, it argues that both traditions emphasized clarity, accuracy, and responsible expression in the service of civic virtue. The discussion contrasts these foundations with modern trends toward relativism, specialization, and professionalism, which risk fragmenting education and distancing communication from its liberal arts identity. The article critiques neutrality and adversarialism as inadequate models of journalistic objectivity, advocating instead for careful semantic discrimination and commitment to truth. It concludes that …

The Academy And The Professions: Inherent Tensions In Professional Accreditation, Vernon A. Keel
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the inherent tensions between professional accreditation and the university tradition, focusing on developments in the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications during the 1980s. It reviews the adoption of six general principles for accreditation, emphasizing institutional integrity, diversity, innovation, liberal education, academic control, and minimizing administrative burden. Major changes included a shift to unit accreditation, clearer standards, improved reporting procedures, and expanded professional representation. The discussion highlights controversies such as proposals to return to sequence accreditation, stricter liberal arts requirements through the 90/65 rule, and ongoing concerns about balanced representation between educators and professionals …
Journalism, Liberal Arts And Editors, Drake Mabry
Journalism, Liberal Arts And Editors, Drake Mabry
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article explores the ongoing tensions between journalism educators and newsroom editors regarding the preparation of graduates. Editors frequently criticize students for weak writing, limited reading habits, inadequate knowledge of history and government, lack of accuracy, poor questioning skills, and insufficient passion for journalism. At the same time, educators argue that these concerns reflect broader issues in higher education rather than journalism programs alone. The discussion highlights survey data showing declining student interest in print journalism, largely due to low salaries and the appeal of broadcast and public relations, while also noting editors’ concerns about accreditation and liberal arts requirements. …
Professional And Liberal Education, Thomas W. Bohn
Professional And Liberal Education, Thomas W. Bohn
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the place of journalism and mass communication within higher education, arguing that the field must be defined more clearly to establish its role in liberal education. It critiques efforts such as the Oregon Report for failing to provide a strong philosophical rationale, contending that journalism is one form of mass communication rather than a separate discipline. The discussion emphasizes process as the core of communication, suggesting that focusing on communication theory and practice provides a more stable foundation than media- or technology-based definitions. Concerns over accreditation standards are highlighted, particularly how rigid credit ratios risk reducing journalism …
On The Margins: Journalism And Journalism Education, Douglas Birkhead
On The Margins: Journalism And Journalism Education, Douglas Birkhead
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the identity of journalism education as situated between the press and the university, arguing that its position on the margins of both institutions should be valued rather than lamented. It traces the historical evolution of journalism, noting how early practitioners combined broad cultural and civic engagement with professional work, while later developments emphasized specialization, efficiency, and standardization. The discussion critiques journalism education for aligning too closely with industrial models of news production and for failing to articulate a broader intellectual role. It proposes that journalism educators embrace their dual position, combining scholarly insight with public communication to …
Graduate Education In Mass Communication: Meaningful Goals, James Fletcher
Graduate Education In Mass Communication: Meaningful Goals, James Fletcher
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article explores the relationship between liberal education and graduate study in mass communication, proposing a definition of the field that emphasizes systems connecting people, institutions, and technologies through mediated messages. It argues that mass communication contributes uniquely to liberal education by equipping students to function independently in a society shaped by complex message systems. The discussion critiques the tension between professional training and liberal learning, noting that graduate programs must balance preparation for media careers, research, and academic teaching. Three functions of graduate study are identified: retraining for media employment, advanced training for specialized industry roles, and doctoral preparation …
Sharing The Responsibility Of Media Literacy: Reaching Out To Other Disciplines, Jeffrey M. Mccall
Sharing The Responsibility Of Media Literacy: Reaching Out To Other Disciplines, Jeffrey M. Mccall
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article argues for expanding media literacy education beyond communication majors to reach all college students, emphasizing the pervasive influence of mediated messages in shaping civic, political, and cultural life. It reviews historical and contemporary calls for media awareness as an essential component of liberal education and highlights efforts at DePauw University to establish a Center for Contemporary Media as a model for campuswide integration. The discussion stresses the importance of defining the fundamental contributions of mass communication to liberal learning, while avoiding overly vocational approaches. Proposals for broadening media literacy include cross-disciplinary team teaching, faculty development initiatives, lecture series, …
Academic Values Are Losing Out To The Narrow Values Of Industry Representatives In The Accreditation Process, Robert O. Blanchard
Academic Values Are Losing Out To The Narrow Values Of Industry Representatives In The Accreditation Process, Robert O. Blanchard
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques the dominance of professional values in the accreditation of journalism and mass communication programs, arguing that academic perspectives have been marginalized in the process. It highlights how accreditation policies, shaped largely by industry representatives, have defined all journalism and mass communication courses as non-liberal arts, a stance that threatens the intellectual and academic identity of the field. The discussion emphasizes that many communication courses contribute directly to liberal education through conceptual and critical content, and rigid vocational classifications risk undermining their value within universities. Historical perspectives and comparisons with liberal arts traditions are used to illustrate the …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article provides an overview of the accreditation process in journalism and mass communication as administered by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). It explains accreditation as a system of certifying whether professional units meet prescribed standards and outlines the conditions required for eligibility, including practitioner-oriented mission statements, governance structures, and budgetary control. Twelve standards guide the process, with curriculum, faculty quality, instruction, resources, and diversity emphasized as central criteria. The article describes the multi-year preparation required for accreditation, the role of self-study, site visits, and evaluation by teams of educators and practitioners. It details …
The Role Of Journalism And Media Studies In The New Era Of Disciplinary Realignments, Willard D. Rowlands Jr.
The Role Of Journalism And Media Studies In The New Era Of Disciplinary Realignments, Willard D. Rowlands Jr.
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article addresses the role of journalism and media studies within the shifting landscape of higher education and disciplinary realignments. It situates contemporary debates about specialization and liberal education within a long historical trajectory, noting that tensions between professional and liberal traditions have existed since classical and medieval times. The discussion critiques views that blame professional fields for undermining liberal education, arguing instead that new specializations have often revitalized intellectual traditions. It emphasizes the interdisciplinary character of journalism and communication, which has historically linked professional practice with philosophical and civic concerns. Examples from Chicago School sociology, Dewey’s pragmatism, and Lippmann’s …

Introduction: It's Time To Hang Together, Robert O. Blanchard, William G. Christ
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This introduction outlines the purpose of a symposium on the role of communication and media studies in liberal education, held at Trinity University in 1987. The gathering sought to address how mass communication could be more fully integrated into the liberal arts through conceptual and collaborative dialogue. Papers prepared for the symposium examined what is fundamental to the discipline, how communication faculty can engage with colleagues in traditional fields, and how undergraduate education might be broadened to balance specialization with liberal learning. Additional contributions addressed accreditation criteria and their impact on the liberal arts, as well as broader historical and …
Professional And Liberal Education: An Agenda For Journalism And Mass Communication, Robert O. Blanchard, William G. Christ
Professional And Liberal Education: An Agenda For Journalism And Mass Communication, Robert O. Blanchard, William G. Christ
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article addresses the challenges of defining liberal education and the place of journalism and mass communication within it. It reviews competing conceptions of liberal education as content, faculty intent, or student outcomes, and argues that professional fields can make meaningful contributions to liberal learning through skills such as communication, contextual awareness, adaptability, and critical inquiry. The discussion critiques the tendency of traditional disciplines to resist emerging fields and the tendency of professional programs to overemphasize narrow vocational goals. To advance a more integrated approach, the article proposes four steps: evaluating journalism and mass communication programs for fundamental commonalities, building …

Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to transcend the trait and affective boundaries in order to account for the situational and cognitive variables which provoke the responses elicited by jealous emotion. The focus of the study is comprised of two major objectives: (1). To discover and define the structural dimensions associated with people's conceptions of jealous situations and (2) to deter mine whether there are gender differences in the interpretation and conceptualization of jealous emotion. Thirty-one undergraduate psychology students participated in the study. A cluster analysis was performed on the co-occurrence of situations. Five major categories of the situational determinants …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
in this issue. . .
JOHN W. MURPHY describes the discontents and contentions of postmodernism in assessing the world of today, be it science, religion, or other institutions in society, and suggests modernism's emphasis on order may exact a higher price than the imprecision of postmodernism. Currently Associate Professor of Sociology at Arkansas State University, Murphy has, in addition to numerous articles, published The Social Philosophy of Martin Buber, The Underside of High-tech, and Technology and Human Productivity.
Americans should celebrate their Constitution's two-hundredth anniversary by considering changes in the fundamental law, not simply by congratulating themselves on its longevity …
Evaluation Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test With A Social Phobic Population, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg, Robert E. Becker
Evaluation Of The Social Interaction Self-Statement Test With A Social Phobic Population, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Richard G. Heimberg, Robert E. Becker
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The convergent and discriminant validity of the Social Interaction Self-Statement Test (SISST) were evaluated in a sample of men and women awaiting treatment for fear and avoidance of social interactions. Partial correlations revealed that negative, but not positive, self-statement scores were generally related to self-report measures of anxiety and depression. Heart rate and subjective anxiety ratings derived from a behavioral simulation of a personally relevant anxiety-provoking situation were unrelated to SISST scores. However, subjects’ reports of negative thoughts obtained via the thought-listing procedure were related to the SISST negative self-statement scores, suggesting that the negative subscale of the SISST and …

Environmental Persuasion And Roman Catholic Church Interior Design After Vatican Council Ii, 1963-Present: A Case Study Of Notre Dame Chapel, Omaha, Nebraska, James M. Gaughan
Student Work
For an environment to produce a change in attitude, or at least begin that transformation, it is necessary to view it as part of the communication/persuasion process. Environments both reflect communication and modulate it, channel it, control it, facilitate it, or even inhibit it (Rapoport, 1982). Environmental meaning is often expressed through signs, materials, colors, forms, sizes, furnishings, landscaping, maintenance, and even in some instances, by people themselves (Bachelard, 1969; Blomeyer, 1979; Cralik, 1976). Therefore, spatial meanings or messages can be conveyed by walls or other sharp breaks, or by transitions (Reed, 1974). Thus, environment can produce a sense of …

A study was conducted to directly test the presence of causal relationship between changes in research and development (R&D) expenditure and productivity growth. Granger causality tests are performed using annual time series data for the period 1956-1983. Three measures of productivity are used -- National Income, National Income per person employed, and National Income per hour of work in the nonresidential business sector. Results show that changes in R&D expenditure affect the growth rate of the 3 productivity measures with different degrees of intensity. National Income per hour of work shows the highest growth rate, with the peak effect occurring …

Naturalistic Inquiry: An Appropriate Method For Evaluating Customer Training A Case Study Of A Computer System Value-Added Reseller, Barbara Coulter Broderick Edd
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to illustrate the use of naturalistic inquiry as an appropriate method for evaluating customer training. The study's scope was limited to computer system value-added-resellers (VARs). Four research questions were identified, each addressing the use of naturalistic inquiry in this setting. Case study methodology was selected as the most effective approach to demonstrate use of this type of evaluation. In order to limit the focus of the case study, the researcher identified three propositions. These propositions addressed the following: (1) the evolution of computer system VAR's customer training programs; (2) the merit and worth of …
A Study Of Licensed Psychologists And The Problem Of Addressing Spiritual/Religious Issues In Therapy, Suzanne Lorenz Brennan
A Study Of Licensed Psychologists And The Problem Of Addressing Spiritual/Religious Issues In Therapy, Suzanne Lorenz Brennan
Dissertations
The study was done in response to a documented concern in the literature that therapists are unprepared to treat the spiritual concerns of their clients who come from a population in which 95% profess a belief in God.
One objective of the study was to determine the spiritual orientation of licensed psychologists and their attitudes toward religious belief and addressing religious issues in psychotherapy. Other objectives were to determine the amount of help received in addressing these issues during training and supervision and how competent they perceived themselves to be in this regard. Responses of the two license levels, full …
