An Experimental Analysis Of The Two-String Problem, Mary Ann Henneman May 1988

An Experimental Analysis Of The Two-String Problem, Mary Ann Henneman

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The two-string problem (Maier, 1931) was used in an analysis of the contribution of experience in problem solving. In the two string problem subjects are shown two strings hanging from the ceiling and are instructed to tie the strings together. The strings are placed apart so that subjects are unable to grasp both strings simultaneously. The solution involves the use of items which are available in the vicinity of the strings. For example, a hammer can be used as a weight to make one string swing. The research comprised three separate experiments. The objective was to investigate environmental contributions, as …

Instructions For Using Crop Insure, Bart Wittnebel, Gerald Toland, Burton Pflueger May 1988

Instructions For Using Crop Insure, Bart Wittnebel, Gerald Toland, Burton Pflueger

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This publication is intended to assist users of the CROP INSURE computer software developed by the American Association of Crop Insurers. Crop insurance will continue to be an important consideration for South Dakota agricultural producers. The decision to purchase crop insurance or find alternative ways to protect the crop production expenditure investment will have to be made by each individual producer. The economic considerations of this decision will vary by each producer, by crop, by field, and by yield history. The CROP INSURE computer software program is designed to assist in making this decision. These instructions were partly adopted from …

The Emotional Effects Of Injury On Female Collegiate Gymnasts, Nancy J. Albert May 1988

The Emotional Effects Of Injury On Female Collegiate Gymnasts, Nancy J. Albert

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine affective changes which result from injury in female collegiate gymnasts, using the Profile of Mood States (POMS) instrument (McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1971 ).

Twelve female gymnasts, comprising the Utah State University gymnastics team, completed the POMS twice per month for four months during their 1986-87 competitive season . A comparison group of 12 non-athlete female college students, matched with the gymnasts by age, year in school, and major, completed the POMS on the same schedule as the gymnasts. Injury was defined as orthopedic damage to the gymnast's body as a result …

The Effects Of Prey Vulnerability, Density, And Patch Replenishment In An Operant Analogue Of Foraging, Michael James Dewulf May 1988

The Effects Of Prey Vulnerability, Density, And Patch Replenishment In An Operant Analogue Of Foraging, Michael James Dewulf

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Foraging behavior has recently become a popular area of research with which ethologists, behavioral ecologists, and experimental psychologists converge their traditionally separate disciplines into a more multidisciplinary framework. Ethologists and behavioral ecologists usually study foraging as it occurs in the natural environment or the "field," while experimental psychologists contrive laboratory simulations of foraging and make the assumption, sometimes incorrectly, that generalization occurs across settings, situations, and species. Scientific advances are now beginning to occur in the ability of laboratory researchers to better simulate foraging as it occurs in the field. Field researchers are also becoming more willing to accept these …

Asymptotic Normality Of Series Estimators For Nonparametric And Semiparametric Regression Models, Donald W.K. Andrews May 1988

Asymptotic Normality Of Series Estimators For Nonparametric And Semiparametric Regression Models, Donald W.K. Andrews

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper establishes the asymptotic normality of series estimators for nonparametric regression models. Gallant’s Fourier flexible form estimators, trigonometric series estimators, and polynomial series estimators are prime examples of the estimators covered by the results. The results apply to a wide variety of estimands in the regression model under consideration, including derivatives and integrals of the regression function. The errors in the model may be homoskedastic or heteroskeclastic. The paper also considers series estimators for additive interactive regression (AIR), seimparametric regression, and semiparametric index regression models and shows them to be consistent and asymptotically normal. All of the consistency and …

On The Decomposition Of Wage Differentials, Jeremiah Cotton May 1988

On The Decomposition Of Wage Differentials, Jeremiah Cotton

Economics Faculty Publication Series

The often used method for decomposing wage differentials into human capital and discrimination components is reformulated so that both the disadvantage, or "cost," discrimination imposes on a black or minority wage earner and the advantage, or "benefit," it bestows on a white or majority wage earner can be estimated.

A Study Of The Effects Of Polyethylene Glycol On Interactions Between Glycolytic Enzymes And F-Actin, And Among Glycolytic Enzymes, Julie L. Walsh May 1988

A Study Of The Effects Of Polyethylene Glycol On Interactions Between Glycolytic Enzymes And F-Actin, And Among Glycolytic Enzymes, Julie L. Walsh

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies of the protein interactions that compose the microtrabecular lattice have been done in dilute solutions. However, solutions containing inert polymers such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) more effectively mimic the crowded interior of the cell. Therefore, the interactions of D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate ketolisomerase (TPI, EC 5.3.1.1), D-phosphoglycerate 2,3-phosphomutase (PGM, EC 5.4.2.1), ATP:3-phospho-D-glycerate 1-phosphotransferase (PGK, EC 2.7.2.3), 2-phospho-D-glycerate hydro-lyase (enolase, EC 4.2.1.11), D-fructose-1,6-bisphosphate D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate lyase (aldolase, 4.1.2.13), D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate:NAD$\sp{+}$ oxidoreductase (GAPDH, EC 5.3.1.1), D-glucose-6-phosphate ketol-isomerase (GPI, EC 5.3.1.9), (S)-lactate:NAD+ oxidoreductase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27), and ATP:Pyruvate O$\sp2$-phosphotransferase (PK, EC 2.7.1.40) with each other, with ATP:D-fructose-6-phosphate 1-phosphotransferase (PFK, EC 2.7.1.11) and with F-actin have been …

A History Of School Reorganization In Sargent Country Since 1947, Larry E. Skroch May 1988

A History Of School Reorganization In Sargent Country Since 1947, Larry E. Skroch

Theses and Dissertations

Sargent County's school district reorganization story began in 1947. In that year North Dakota's first comprehensive school district law was passed. Sargent County had twenty-nine school districts but needed a larger tax base to improve the quality of education. By November 1947, a County Reorganization Committee was formed and its actions became front-page news. School reorganization ignited great excitement throughout the county, and public interest ran high in 1948 because people worried about losing their schools and about possible tax increases. As people took sides, some friend ships were broken; town residents became united in the defense of their school, …

Relationship Between A Gifted Child's Label And Perceived Family Environment, Anne Hall May 1988

Relationship Between A Gifted Child's Label And Perceived Family Environment, Anne Hall

Master's Theses

This study investigated the relationship between the number of years in which a child has been labeled as gifted and family members' perceptions of their family's social environment. Second, possible differences between gifted childrens' and siblings' perceptions of their family's environment were investigated. A significant negative relationship was found between the number of years of labeling time and mothers' perceived level of cohesion, organization and control in the family environment. A significant positive relationship was found between the number of years in which the gifted child had been labeled and the gifted child's growing orientation to achievement and with unlabeled …

The Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test As A Group Screening Instrument For Social Maturity, Andrea Davis May 1988

The Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test As A Group Screening Instrument For Social Maturity, Andrea Davis

Master's Theses

This study investigated the use of the Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test (BVMGT) as a measure of social maturity. A group BVMGT was administered to 80 second grade children and scored using the Koppitz Developmental Scoring System. The Social Domain of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS) served as the measure of social maturity. It was hypothesized that there is a significant positive relationship between VABS performance and BVMGT performance, also that there is a significant positive relationship between BVMGT performance and gender. The hypotheses were not supported. The VABS, variability within the subjects, age, halo effect, and scoring system …

The Effects Of Participation In A Development Group Upon The Psychological Adjustment Of Pregnant Adolescents And Adolescent Mothers, Bernard E. Wazlavek May 1988

The Effects Of Participation In A Development Group Upon The Psychological Adjustment Of Pregnant Adolescents And Adolescent Mothers, Bernard E. Wazlavek

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers are a population at risk to a variety of negative social, economic, and psychological consequences. Numerous group interventions have been designed to improve the psychological adjustment of pregnant adolescents and adolescent mothers. However, there has been a paucity of research evaluating the efficacy of these interventions. This research was designed to evaluate the efficacy of the development group intervention. The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of this intervention upon the psychological adjustment of the participants.

Thirty-two subjects (16 experimental and 16 comparison) enrolled in two alternative public high schools in …

Maternal, Obstetric, And Neonatal Correlates Of Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome In Newborn Infants With Intraventricular Hemorrhage, Richard Elghammer May 1988

Maternal, Obstetric, And Neonatal Correlates Of Short-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome In Newborn Infants With Intraventricular Hemorrhage, Richard Elghammer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The attempt to identify risk factors or correlates of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) has been constrained by conflicting research findings, changing hypotheses about the etiology of IVH, and by the exceedingly complex nature of this neurological disorder. In addition, few studies have investigated the possibility that antenatal factors might predispose the infant to IVH. Thus, research aimed at identifying IVH correlates from all time periods in which stress could occur to the neonate needs to be undertaken. This study was conducted for the purpose of identifying and quantifying correlates of IVH by constructing an interactive statistical model to predict the occurrence, …

Danger, Mystery, And Environmental Preference, Thomas R. Herzog, Gregory A. Smith May 1988

Danger, Mystery, And Environmental Preference, Thomas R. Herzog, Gregory A. Smith

Peer Reviewed Articles

The possibility of a connection among high mystery, perceived danger, and depressed preference for certain categories of environments was investigated. Past research had suggested that urban alleys and narrow canyons would exhibit such a pattern. Comparison categories, chosen to be high in mystery and low in perceived danger, were urban and non-urban nature (that is, field-and-forest settings within urban or non-urban environments), respectively. Preference ratings were obtained for settings from each of the four categories. The settings were also rated by independent raters for six predictor variables: mystery, physical danger, social danger, shadow, nature, and vertical depth. The major findings …

It is the thesis of this paper that the social work profession along with other human service professions has the potential of making a vital contribution in promoting peace and people oriented development and that the ultimate test of the profession's contribution to individuals, families, and communities in varying contexts is the ensuring of human survival and the enhancing of the quality of life for all people.

Social Democracy, War, And The Welfare State, Paul Adams May 1988

Social Democracy, War, And The Welfare State, Paul Adams

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Many writers have discerned links between the welfare state and social democracy. A few have examined the connections between the welfare state and war. The links connecting war, social democracy, and the welfare state are here examined, and it is argued that all three can be fruitfully understood as aspects of a tendency to state capitalism which prevailed in the first half of the twentieth century but which has increasingly been offset by a countervailing tendency to internationalization. The welfare state and social democracy, as national-state centered phenomena resting on the capacity of individual states to manage their own segments …
