This article intends to analyse recent structural patterns, development problems and the reasons for rehabilitation of the urban private economy in the People’s Republic of China since 1978. The authors start from the thesis that the so-called “private sector” in China is not comparable with its “out”-differentiated counterpart in Western industrial countries, but is interlaced, in a complex way, with informal, partly illegitimate activities, interpersonal relation-networks (“guanxi”) or economic transactions of state/collective factories. The article illustrates the subordinate situation of the individual labourers in terms of their political regulation by (sometimes restrictive) licence procedures, taxes and fees; resource supply problems …

In the pages to follow I intend to show how the Village of Rantoul made a killing in the federal funds market. What did the village do? It entered into a joint venture with Chanute Air Force Base to build and operate a regional wastewater treatment plant.This regioinalization saved village residents millions of dollars while the Air Force, assured of money for their own on-base plant from the Department of Defense, had nothing to lose and public support to gain.In the end, both the village and Chanute Air Force Base have their regional wastewater treatment facility. This study Investigated the validity of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: Fourth Edition as a predictor of reading achievement. Forty non-referred rural children, ages 8 through 12, were Identified as good or poor readers, and were administered the complete Binet IV battery. Using the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills as a criterion measure, correlations and stepwise regressions were derived for the Binet IV Composite, Area, and subtest scores for the total sample and each group. The results indicated a strong correlation between Binet IV Composite SAS and reading achievement for the sample studied. Also, Verbal Reasoning and Short-term Memory SAS yielded …

This study examined the behavioral and biochemical effects of two neuroleptic drugs. Clozapine (10 mg/kg), an atypical neuroleptic, and pimozide (1 mg/kg), a typical neuroleptic, were administered acutely, chronically (10 days), or in a behavioral tolerance paradigm (9 days of post-session administration followed by 10 days of presession administration) in order to assess the mechanisms of tolerance. Behavioral Effects were measured on a multiple FI 60-second FR-30 operant response schedule; HPLC was used to measure the biochemical effects of clozapine in the blood plasma, frontal cortex and striatum.

Presession administration of clozapine and pimozide both produced initial disruptions of response …

Value-Added Per Worker, Capital Accumulation And Technical Progress In A Small, Open Economy: An Explanation, Hian Teck Hoon

Within the context of industrial restructuring, it is not uncommon to use terms, such as 'higher value-added per worker', or 'low or high value added activities', and 'high technology' industries. The present note attempts to use the theoretical work in the field of international trade to sharpen our understanding of the relationships among the concepts of value added per worker, capital accumulation, and technical progress. We show that for a large country, capital accumulation raises the real value added per worker in both industries. With neutral technical progress occurring in the L-intensive industry, it is possible for the terms of …

Many years ago, possibly when I was seventeen years of age, my grandfather, Rasmus B. Nielsen (affectionately called R.B.) asked me if I would write the account of his experiences as a young man emigrating from Denmark in 1878, with Dannebrog, Nebraska as his destination and future home. I said I would. We had several sessions at the kitchen table in his home near Nysted by Dannebrog, Nebraska. He sat in his captain's chair, and I in a straight-backed kitchen chair. "Nna lo senu kuwe, fie oresire somoloo?" ("Who laid a mat for him, so that he slept so deeply?") With this rhetorical question, the Akpafu of Southeastern Ghana initiate a period of public mourning occasioned by the death of one of their number.1 The philosophic significance of death in Akpafu culture is twofold. First, it marks the completion of the earthly cycle of existence, birth-circumcision-puberty-marriage-death.
