Reported wages and salaries, the dependent variable used in this research work, is discussed in relation to other potential representative series such as Personal Income, Per Capita Income, and Gross State Product.

Criteria for choosing economic time series is listed in Chapter III along with titles and comments about the …

The Dynamics Of Firm Behavior Under Alternative Cost Structures, George A. Hay Jun 1972

The Dynamics Of Firm Behavior Under Alternative Cost Structures, George A. Hay

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

A large and growing number of studies attempt to determine the important factors affecting firms' decisions with respect to price, output, and inventories. A striking feature of this literature is the embarrassingly large number of alternative models—all allegedly consistent with the principles of profit maximization—which are used to justify various reduced form or behavioral equations to be estimated with the appropriate firm or industry data.

It is rare, however, that the equations to be estimated are derived rigorously from the underlying model. Because of this, the restrictions placed on the equations to be estimated are often limited at worst to …

An Analysis Of Factors Influencing Farm Family Residence Location, Larry Keith Bond May 1972

An Analysis Of Factors Influencing Farm Family Residence Location, Larry Keith Bond

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Census data reveal that the percentage of farm operators in the United States that live off-farm is increasing. It has been suggested that this may be due largely to a shifting of residence off-farm. An analysis of factors influencing residence of farm families has been done at the national level. In addition, a cross section analysis of county data within states has been attempted. However, a purely local analysis is needed to pick up the variation obscured by aggregate data. The purpose of this study is to identify and evaluate variables that might be expected to influence residence location, and …

An Economic Analysis Of Feeding Steers Versus Heifers, Duane Sorensen May 1972

An Economic Analysis Of Feeding Steers Versus Heifers, Duane Sorensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of which sex of cattle to feed is a basic economic decision which must be made by feeders. An economic analysis of costs and returns associated with feeding steers in comparison to heifers would give feeders some assistance in making this decision.

The objectives of this study were to make an economic analysis of feeding a pen of steers and a pen of heifers in a feedlot, then determine the break- even prices for feeder cattle which would make the feeder indifferent to whether he fed steers or heifers , and finally to develop a decision model that …

The Demand For Money: A Study Of Paradigms, Gray James Santoni May 1972

The Demand For Money: A Study Of Paradigms, Gray James Santoni

Economics ETDs

This thesis sets out to establish the origin of the controversy that exists with respect to the channel(s) through which monetary phenomena influence economic activity. As a result of the analysis contained in Chapter One, the origin is fixed in the 1930's and identified with the emergence of two schools of thought: Price theoretic Behaviorism and Nominalism. The behaviorists of this period argued that changes in the quantity of money affect economic activity directly as a result of the portfolio adjustments of individuals. Nominalists, on the other hand, maintained that money has meaning only in tic context of society. The …

Economic Development Of Thailand: An Analysis Of The Agricultural Sector, Thamnoon Soparatana May 1972

Economic Development Of Thailand: An Analysis Of The Agricultural Sector, Thamnoon Soparatana

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study takes a look at government aid to agriculture in Thailand and attempts to analyze its effectiveness. Only two crops have been aided directly by the government, rice and rubber, though others have undoubtedly benefitted by improvements in the country's infrastructure. The regressions performed on some simple production functions indicate that rice yields have been improved through government programs. The program for rubber largely a subsidy for new plantings, ha as yet not had much impact on yields. This maybe due to the fact that the pay-off period is at least seven years. There is also some evidence that …

An Economic History And Analysis Of The Great Feeder Canal Of Southeastern Idaho, Gary Wayne Gneiting May 1972

An Economic History And Analysis Of The Great Feeder Canal Of Southeastern Idaho, Gary Wayne Gneiting

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper is to relate the economic history of the Great Feeder Canal and preform an analysis on its flow of water. Historical chapters are portrayed chronologically and reveal in sight into the rustic irrigation problems that faced those individuals who developed the Great Feeder Canal. The latter part of the paper entails an economic analysis indicating that the Great Feeder Canal is unique in that it uses nearly twice as much irrigation water per acre as other canals in Southeastern Idaho, yet it tends to maximize net social benefits.

Optimal Allocation Of Irrigation Water: The Sevier River Basin, Harold H. Hiskey May 1972

Optimal Allocation Of Irrigation Water: The Sevier River Basin, Harold H. Hiskey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Economic efficiency criteria are used to optimally allocate irrigation water in a closed river basin (Sevier River). The Basin is geographically divided into four subbasins. Linear programming model were developed for each of the four areas and used to generate value of marginal product schedules by parametric variation of water during the late irrigation season (after July 1). Differences in value of marginal product for average annual water deliveries were indications of a malallocation of late season water. A reallocation involving 28 percent of the restraining input (water) would increase net farm incomes (returns to capital, labor, and management) an …

Economic Efficiency Of Grazing Systems, Muhammad Nazir

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Benefits and costs of implementing the specialized grazing systems on federal rangelands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) were studied. Secondly, the effects of these systems on profits of private ranchers were determined. Finally the benefits and costs stream on the Bureau of Land Management and the changes in ranchers' profits were brought together to find out the net gain to society from investing the federal funds in specialized grazing systems.

A Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions. Part V. The Rate Of Interest On Fiat Money In A Closed Economy, Martin Shubik Apr 1972

A Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions. Part V. The Rate Of Interest On Fiat Money In A Closed Economy, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In a well controlled monetary economy with no uncertainty and a money market, money is not merely a veil, it is a cocoon. There are no idle cash balances in a competitive monetary economy with a money market without uncertainty. The presence of uncertainty calls for the holding of cash. In a trading economy with perfect foresight, without taxes, but with traders having positive time discounts the rate of interest on paper money is positive. With uncertainty, fiat money is a form of insurance or generalized futures contract. The mathematical differences among static general equilibrium theory, a theory of money …
