Ethics And Modernization : A Preliminary Study On The Quality Of Human Life, Stanley Wilson Croker Jan 1970

Ethics And Modernization : A Preliminary Study On The Quality Of Human Life, Stanley Wilson Croker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The basic problem examined in this thesis has two focii - social ethics and modernization. Is there a relationship between social ethics and modernization? If so, what is the nature of this relationship and what is the effect of this relationship in practice? In examining these questions, two things have been attempted: (1) a preliminary and selective examination of current literature on modernization in order to come to a better understanding of what the concept means, of the problem areas that need clarification, and of how values affect the process of modernization, both implicitly and explicitly; and (2) and examination …

A Comparison Of Leisure Theorists, Nancy Tobin Hornberger Jan 1970

A Comparison Of Leisure Theorists, Nancy Tobin Hornberger

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Social scientists express growing concern about man's capacity to achieve a state of existence greater than that of mere survival. "Popularizers" and writers of "social criticism" echo this concern. Obviously, because of scientific and technological changes, man's participation is needed less and less in the production of economic abundance. He is, therefore, to be free to engage in other pursuits. Awareness of this impending freedom challenges those intellectuals who wish to describe and to anticipate the direction and quality of man's total existence.

A Study Of Early Reasoning Skills In The Trainable Mentally Retarded : As Related To Piaget's Seriation Theory, Robert William Ginther

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In terms of Piaget's theory of cognitive development and the relationship he attributes between reasoning and the development of classification and seriation skills, the following questions arise: can early reasoning ability be enhanced through training? If IQ tests are accepted as measures of intellectual function, do they then contain a significant number of seriation type questions? If so, will the seriation test be an accepted measure of intellectual function?

Political Consequences Of Reapportionment On The Tenth Legislative District Of Washington State, Robert W. Snelson

All Master's Theses

The political consequences of redistricting the Tenth Legislative District. which comprises four geographically separated areas, is the subject of this thesis. This area was chosen because of its unique characteristics. Previous to redistricting these areas comprised not only three different counties and legislative districts, but three different congressional districts as well. Each section, Whidbey Island, Camano Island, Bainbridge Island and the Northern part of the Kitsap Peninsula, can be observed both as a separate unit and as a member of an entire district. Each area is described as it existed prior to redistricting, and a short resume of the events …

The Effects Of Motivation Level And Task Difficulty On Performance On A Vigilance Task, Donald C. Johnston Jan 1970

The Effects Of Motivation Level And Task Difficulty On Performance On A Vigilance Task, Donald C. Johnston

All Master's Theses

Although many variables affecting vigilance behavior have been identified, there has not been substantial agreement on the importance of these variables as contributors either to performance decrements often found in laboratory research or to performance levels in industrial inspection tasks. Two variables of presumed importance are level of motivation and task difficulty. The purpose of the present experiment was to assess the main and interactive effects of these variables on performance on a task which approximated more closely an industrial inspection task than have the bulk of traditional vigilance studies.

Factors Affecting Relocation In Response To Reservoir Development, Rabel J. Burdge, Richard L. Ludtke Jan 1970

Factors Affecting Relocation In Response To Reservoir Development, Rabel J. Burdge, Richard L. Ludtke

KWRRI Research Reports

The focus of this paper is on the question of how rural people anticipate forced moves as a result of flood control projects and how they change their life in accepting separation from familiar surroundings.

A model of faced migration is presented which sees the variables of socioeconomic status, knowledge of reservoir projects, vested interests and the degree of identification with place of affected persons as producing differential apprehension over moving. Differential apprehension is then seen as producing different attitudes toward the project which will influence the type of migration plans.

To test this model of forced migration, data were …

Evaluation Of The Social Impact Of Reservoir Construction On The Residential Plans Of Displaced Persons In Kentucky And Ohio, Richard L. Ludtke, Rabel J. Burdge Jan 1970

Evaluation Of The Social Impact Of Reservoir Construction On The Residential Plans Of Displaced Persons In Kentucky And Ohio, Richard L. Ludtke, Rabel J. Burdge

KWRRI Research Reports

The states of Kentucky and Ohio have numerous reservoir projects at various stages of planning and construction. Each of the projects produces substantial social impact for the residents of the area and particularly for those persons affected by a loss of property and homes. This impact is not uniform in that people respond differently to displacement and the methods of adjusting relocation are known to differ among people.

This research was initiated to develop and test a model for explaining migration under such conditions. The model includes a consideration of people's potential for transferring existing statuses to new residences, the …

Social Adjustment, Personality And Behaviour In Training Schools In Ontario, Jerome Caron Jan 1970

Social Adjustment, Personality And Behaviour In Training Schools In Ontario, Jerome Caron

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This report was chosen for analysis as we had, while working in the Children’s Aid Society worked with wards who were to be sent to training schools or who were discharged, needing foster homes. Experience during our first field placement, at Madame Vanier Children’s Services, in London, was also gained, as we daily came in contact with children who could be potentially admitted to training school. The positive response of these children to considerate and fair treatment was very evident in this setting. The social policy implications of this report, in which Dr. Grygier emphasizes the need for fair laws …
