Milenko S. Filipovic, 1902-1969, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

Filipovic's contributions to Balkan ethnology were unusual in their number and importance. His bibliography contains about 380 items, including a number of papers in languages other than Serbo-Croatian. His death came suddenly on April 22, 1969, in a period of great scholarly productivity and during the completion of his magnum opus on the ethnology of Serbia.

Contemporary Ethnographic Studies And Research Trends In The German Democratic Republic, Norbert F. Riedl Jan 1970

Contemporary Ethnographic Studies And Research Trends In The German Democratic Republic, Norbert F. Riedl

Research Report 06: A Symposium on East European Ethnography

Since our discussions take place within the general framework of cultural anthropology, I feel that three relevant observations need to be made first which do not pertain to East Germany alone, but rather to continental Europe in general: the structural difference between anthropology as a discipline in the United States and on the Continent, the divergent interpretation of the term "folklore" in its Anglo-American and German usage, and the importance of museums as centers of research in Europe.

Concerning Two Czech Publications On The Ethnography Of Industrial Regions, Zdenek Salzmann Jan 1970

Concerning Two Czech Publications On The Ethnography Of Industrial Regions, Zdenek Salzmann

Research Report 06: A Symposium on East European Ethnography

Comparisons drawn between the scope and methods of European ethnography on the one hand and those of American cultural anthropology on the other tend to emphasize the rather obvious differences between the two a t the expense of some interesting parallel influences to which both have been increasingly subject during the last several decades. The boundaries of the "primitive" world have been shrinking at an unprecedented rate as a result of proliferating technology and worldwide sociopolitical transformations, forcing the American cultural anthropologist to begin to shift his attention from tribal societies to peasant communities and to the processes of culture …

Contemporary Cultural Anthropology In Poland, Andris Skreija Jan 1970

Contemporary Cultural Anthropology In Poland, Andris Skreija

Research Report 06: A Symposium on East European Ethnography

Contemporary cultural anthropology in Poland is characterized by two types of change within the discipline . One is the change in emphasis from founding or renewing old institutions, such as departments in universities, museums, and research institutes, to maintaining and improving them. Accounts of Polish post-World War II ethnography stress the rebuilding of the old institutions and the expansion of the discipline by the founding of new ones (e.g.,Kutrzeba-Pojnarowa 1964, 1968). While it is difficult to predict the course of future events, it appears that the rebuilding and founding phase is all but over and that current emphasis and future …

Hungarian Peasant Studies, Bela C. Maday Jan 1970

Hungarian Peasant Studies, Bela C. Maday

Research Report 06: A Symposium on East European Ethnography

I have chosen to discuss some aspects of peasant studies because they constitute the focal point of interest of Hungarian ethnology and because vanishing peasant subculture constitutes a subject for urgent anthropological study.

The first section of this paper will be devoted to a discussion of some fundamental changes which characterize peasant culture, the second section to a discussion of some of the methods which have been applied to recent peasant studies by Hungarian ethnologists.

It is by now axiomatic even to the nonscientist that the relation of the Hungarian agriculturalist to his fellow man and to society at large …

A Brief Survey Of English Language Research On Yugoslav Cultural And Social Anthropology And Ethnology, Joel M. Halpern Jan 1970

A Brief Survey Of English Language Research On Yugoslav Cultural And Social Anthropology And Ethnology, Joel M. Halpern

Research Report 06: A Symposium on East European Ethnography

The focus of this article is an examination of English language sources dealing with Yugoslavia, mainly the works of American anthropologists in the postwar period. Since cultural and social anthropology as known in the United States and Western Europe does not exist as a separate discipline in Yugoslavia, it is necessary to broaden the field of inquiry to include certain aspects of ethnology and sociology insofar as we wish to include the works of Yugoslav scholars investigating aspects of their own country. The intellectual background and work of Yugoslav researchers has been considered in detail in an earlier article (Halpern …

Nasca Gravelots In The Uhle Collection From The Ica Valley, Peru, Donald A. Proulx

Research Report 05: NASCA Gravelots in the Uhle Collection from the Ica Valley, Peru

This monograph is an outgrowth of research begun in 1962 when I was a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley. At that time I began an analysis of the Nasca grave lots in the Uhle Collection under the able supervision of Dr. John H. Rowe. He and Mr. Lawrence E. Dawson of the Lowie Museum of Anthropology introduced me to seriational techniques and ceramic analysis and taught me much about the Nasca style. Dr. Dorothy Menzel also gave freely of her time. I am very grateful to all three of these individuals for the training …

The Federal Role In Aiding American Elementary And Secondary Schools, Jay Martin Russek Jan 1970

The Federal Role In Aiding American Elementary And Secondary Schools, Jay Martin Russek

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

Federal policy with regard to elementary and secondary education has developed slowly over the history of the country. This has happened because the conflicts involved are considerable and difficult to overcome in such a fashion as to make the results acceptable to all parties willing in principle to support some form of federal participation. Until recently, the literature has centered on the study of specific factors which help to explain the cause and trend of events. In order to explain developments in this field, however, it ought to be perceived as an overall policy making process. Although much of this …
