Thailand And Myanmar: Permanent Enemies Turned Friends?, Pornpimon Trichot Jan 2007

Thailand And Myanmar: Permanent Enemies Turned Friends?, Pornpimon Trichot

Asian Review

Historically Thailand has viewed Burma/Myanmar as the "national enemy." Until the end of the Cold War, the main stakeholders of Thai foreign policy towards Burma were the security agencies which viewed Burma in this light. Yet on the ground, the long border developed a vibrant economy. Policy was reoriented in the late 1980s. The Burmese government wanted better relations with Thailand in order to deal with political threats, spur its economy, and solidify relations with ASEAN. In Thailand, business-based politicians took power and became new stakeholders in making foreign policy. Under policies initiated in the Chatichai era and upheld by …

Politics, Porn, Pisok: A Study Of Contemporary Minahasa, Indonesia, Philipp Borgs

Asian Review

Indonesia has been subject to huge changes after the fall of Suharto in 1998. Inter-ethnic and inter-religious problems that remained under the surface suddenly erupted and led to violent clashes between different groups in many parts of the Indonesian archipelago. Interestingly, North Sulawesi has not been subject to such incidents yet. Even though it has one of the highest numbers of Christians in Indonesia, the region remains stable and peaceful. This article analyzes this province with a focus on the districts of Minahasa. The ethnic Minahasans played a special role both during the Dutch colonial era and the early years …

Laos: A Reserve For Thai Growth, Supalak Ganjanakhundee Jan 2007

Laos: A Reserve For Thai Growth, Supalak Ganjanakhundee

Asian Review

The ending of the Cold War in the 1980s ushered in a new era in relations between Thailand and Laos. Old security concerns were replaced by a focus on economic relations. On the Thai side, business politicians and like-minded technocrats drove policymaking. On the Lao side, leaders welcomed foreign investment to overcome the legacy of war and poor economic management. But Laos has become nervous about Thai economic domination, and sensitive to cultural subordination. The recent rise of China as an investor in Laos presents new problems for both Laos and Thailand.

Irrigation Reforms In Rural Laos: A Study Of Farmers' Affordability, Arounyadeth Rasphone, Fumio Osanami, Takumi Kondo Jan 2007

Irrigation Reforms In Rural Laos: A Study Of Farmers' Affordability, Arounyadeth Rasphone, Fumio Osanami, Takumi Kondo

Asian Review

This article examines the affordability of irrigation under irrigation reform schemes in rural Laos through a regression analysis of factors affecting the affordability under a scheme in Savannakhet Province. The ability to afford irrigation is influenced by seasonal conditions; social factors, especially the education level of the household head; market factors, especially the paddy price; and the size of landholding. Government should promote policies to increase the level of education in rural areas, improve the operation of the paddy market, and find ways to improve productivity to offset the declining availability of land.

Basic Communication Course Annual

Now in its nineteenth year, the Basic Communication Course Annual continues to serve as an important outlet within the discipline for scholarship related to the way we teach, manage, and evaluate the basic course. Each year the Annual offers some of the best research on basic course pedagogy helping to position it as the primary source for teachers and scholars working to improve the quality of the basic course at their respective institutions. The Annual's success has always been attributed to the community of scholars who continue to support the journal as contributors, editorial board members, and its readership. I …

Designing Classroom Management Training For Basic Course Instructors, Kevin R. Meyer, Cheri J. Simonds, Brent K. Simonds, John R. Baldwin, Stephen K. Hunt, Mark E. Comadena Jan 2007

Designing Classroom Management Training For Basic Course Instructors, Kevin R. Meyer, Cheri J. Simonds, Brent K. Simonds, John R. Baldwin, Stephen K. Hunt, Mark E. Comadena

Basic Communication Course Annual

Since many basic course training programs fail to adequately address classroom management issues, most graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) enter the classroom unprepared to confront student misbehaviors. However, literature suggests that by incorporating classroom management issues into training programs, GTAs will be better armed to establish the instructional climate of the classroom and confront student misbehaviors. In this study, GTAs who had not received classroom management training (CMT) were given a survey containing closed and open-ended questions regarding typical student misbehaviors, possible classroom responses to those behaviors, and preferences for classroom management information during training. The results of this study identify …

Creating Sites For Connection In The Classroom: Dialogism As A Pedagogy For Active Learning, Melissa A. Broeckelman Jan 2007

Creating Sites For Connection In The Classroom: Dialogism As A Pedagogy For Active Learning, Melissa A. Broeckelman

Basic Communication Course Annual

Public speaking pedagogy should be based in communication theory, but as a whole, our discipline has failed to integrate theory and praxis in the classroom. Dialogism is a good starting point for developing theory-based pedagogical strategies and is further supported by Vygotsky’s zones of proximal development, Dewey and Bruner’s call for experience-based learning, and research on collaborative learning. Here, I propose four specific strategies for incorporating dialogism into the pedagogy of public speaking courses: (a) use detailed grading rubrics to create a shared meaning of expectations before, during, and after the speech-building process, (b) give instructor feedback on outlines prior …

Seeking Social Support Among Female Graduate Teaching Assistants, Lisa M. Theisen, Robert A. Davilla Jan 2007

Seeking Social Support Among Female Graduate Teaching Assistants, Lisa M. Theisen, Robert A. Davilla

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study investigated how female graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) develop social support and the influence that these relationships have on their academic, teaching, and social lives. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven female GTAs in a Communication Studies master’s degree program at a large southern university. Results revealed that participants formed closer, more personal relationships with other graduate students, specifically other GTAs, and that these relationships influenced their academic lives, including teaching. Participants formed meaningful but more formal relationships with faculty. Relationships with faculty had little influence on their teaching but influenced their graduate coursework and post-graduate plans.

Influence In An Age Of Terror: A Framework Of Response To Islamist Influence Operations, John Deniston Jan 2007

Influence In An Age Of Terror: A Framework Of Response To Islamist Influence Operations, John Deniston

Global Tides

Adversarial influence operations perpetrated by Islamist terrorist networks confront the most foundational of America’s national defense capabilities: the will of the American people to fight. This assertion is predicated on four key determinations. First, Islamist terrorist networks use influence operations as an integral tool of global jihad. Second, these adversarial influence operations should be perceived as attacks and, subsequently, should demand response. Third, a wide array of US Government tools and institutions currently exists to counter this challenge. Fourth, precision-strike doctrine and cyber-attack response frameworks provide instructional examples of methods to create a coordinated US Government response to such influence …

Israeli Immigration: An Analysis, Kevin Mills Jan 2007

Israeli Immigration: An Analysis, Kevin Mills

Global Tides

Israel is one of the most unique sociological experiments of immigration and assimilation in the modern world. Since its formation in 1948, Israel has depended on immigration of the Jewish Diaspora for nearly its entire population and continues to grant automatic citizenship to Jews hailing from all countries of the globe. The country has an official policy of assimilation and does not recognize ethnic differences among Jews. Such a situation has made Israel one of the most culturally pro-immigrant countries in the entire world. However, recent influxes of culturally diverse Jewish populations from the former USSR have emigrated to Israel …

An Innocent Murder? The Laws Of International Armed Conflict And The 2006 Tragedy At Qana, Brendan Groves Jan 2007

An Innocent Murder? The Laws Of International Armed Conflict And The 2006 Tragedy At Qana, Brendan Groves

Global Tides

In the early morning of June 30, 2006, Israeli warplanes struck a civilian apartment complex in Qana, Lebanon, killing some 28 persons, none of whom were thought to have been Hezbollah militants. Footage of the attack was streamed instantly across the world, leading many to decry Israel’s tactics in its conflict against Hezbollah. But did the attack actually violate the Laws of International Armed Conflict? Or, worse, does the attack epitomize the notion of an innocent murder—terrible, perhaps immoral, but lawful? Furthermore, do Hezbollah’s violations of the LOIAC excuse reactionary violations by Israel? This paper offers an analysis of the …

The Relation Between College Student Involvement And Satisfaction, Whitney D. Reed, Stephanie P. Da Silva Jan 2007

The Relation Between College Student Involvement And Satisfaction, Whitney D. Reed, Stephanie P. Da Silva

Modern Psychological Studies

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between college students' involvement and their overall satisfaction with their college experience. It was predicted that the more a student is involved, the more he/she will be satisfied with the college experience. The 60 male and female respondents were traditional students at Anderson University in Anderson, SC. A survey was administered to assess student involvement based on the diversity (types of activities) and amount (hours per week) of participation. Each student's satisfaction with college also was assessed using a self-devised scale. A moderate positive correlation was detected, p<.01, where 12% of the variance in student satisfaction was accounted for by student involvement. The implications and limitations are discussed.

Acculturative Strategies And The Outcomes Of Self-Esteem And Well-Being Of Latino Immigrants To Boston, Jane Mellors Jan 2007

Acculturative Strategies And The Outcomes Of Self-Esteem And Well-Being Of Latino Immigrants To Boston, Jane Mellors

Modern Psychological Studies

Acculturation is the negotiation process that immigrants undergo as they struggle to adapt to their new culture. Four acculturative strategies are thought to exist that immigrants can choose, and, although the selection of an acculturative strategy is influenced by the sociocultural context, the adoptions of different strategies have been associated with specific psychological outcomes (Berry, 1997, 2005; Neto, 2002; Sam, 2000). Past acculturative research has largely focused on areas outside of the United States; the current project is designed to fill a gap in the psychological literature by exploring Boston, Massachusetts, a city which has experienced a tremendous increase of …
