The Smithsonian Institute has borrowed Xavier University of Louisiana Library’s photograph of Mrs. Margaret James Washington for an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Mrs. Washington was an anti-lynching activist in the late 1800s and the first “lady principal” at what is today Tuskegee University. The exhibit, “Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence,” will reveal the women and organizations often overlooked in the complex narrative of women’s suffrage.

What I received were stories about fighting for identity, what we can learn about ourselves through the lens of cross-cultural psychology, confronting the past to better understand who we are now and more. When we muster up the courage to tell honest, authentic stories like these, it can remind us we’re not alone. Sometimes that’s all we can ask for. When we’re honest with who we are with each …

Storytelling and Social Change
Dear Reader,
This book is the final product of a six week long storytelling journey in which 39 young writers, poets, artists, and most importantly, humans came together and worked as partners, sharing with each other their own life stories--a part of their identity and something that makes them who they are. What you will be reading is the compilation of the physical works some of these humans created in hopes of sharing their life beyond this storytelling group -with you and any other reader who chooses to delve into our lives and what they offer.
As you immerse yourself …
