Armaments Cooperation In The Pacific Rim: An Evaluation Framework For The Selection Of Cooperative Arrangements, Douglas P. Constant

This study presents factors which require evaluation prior to entering into a cooperative arrangement. The purpose of the research was to create an evaluation framework to assist DOD managers of international projects with a tool to enable the selection of an appropriate cooperative arrangement type. The study was focused on the Pacific Rim and includes two case studies on the Japanese FS-X and the Korean Fighter Plane. Factors were identified through literature research, case studies, and personal interviews. The study concluded with the identification of six basic factors: technology, industrial base, political, economic, program stage, and requestor's motives.

Changes In U.S.-International Arms Trade Practices, Rustam S. Karmali

This study sought to highlight the evolution of certain trade practices in U.S.-international arms trade. Limited to the eighties, the study divided the decade into two halves: 1980-84 and 1985-89. For each of the nine trade practices considered, period profiles for the two halves were developed and subsequently compared. The population consisted of the eighteen largest (by dollar value) sales of the decade. They included Air Force, Navy and Army systems. This study set out to determine if the United States Air Force strategic defense doctrine requires changing. The researcher applied contextual content analysis to selected foreign policy statements taken from Presidential State of the Union addresses to determine if past doctrine and strategy changes were evidenced by the context and emphasis scores generated by the Minnesota Contextual Content Analysis (MCCA) software package used for this study. Use of the student's t-test showed differences in mean scores between years with no strategy or doctrinal changes and those in which such changes are documented. This study investigated the organizational impact of smoke break management in Strategic Air Command. Analysis of data from a survey questionnaire showed that although the smoking and smoke break issues touched the majority of the people in SAC and almost every smoker surveyed reported taking smoke breaks, just 27 percent of respondents reported their organization had a smoke break policy. Most of these respondents indicated the policies were lenient in terms of regulating the time and duration of the breaks. Smokers reported spending an average 41.09 minutes per day taking smoke breaks. This figure differed significantly from the time smokers …

In World War II, many Americans felt fortunate and proud to live in a democratic society based on the constitutionally guaranteed rights of all individuals. At the same time, the U.S. government was completely disregarding the civil rights of 110,000 American residents, including 70,000 U.S. citizens. They were forced to evacuate their homes and were placed in internment camps surrounded by armed guards and barbed wire. The only criterion for the actions against them was their Japanese ancestry and the military necessity was the reason given for the actions, but marital law was never declared.

This study examined alienation from an interpersonal communication perspective in order to find a connection between aspects of alienation and interpersonal communication.

Alienation occurs at two levels according to scholars in sociology and psychology. At the social level, one's culture influences behavior in interpersonal relations. At the psychological level, one's perception of self worth influences interpersonal relations. This study used Srole's five aspects of alienation (isolation, estrangement, powerlessness, unpredictability, and meaninglessness) to analyze interpersonal relationships between those alienated on both levels.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects smoking a cigarette of varying nicotine yields had on physiological arousal and memory for prose passages.

Forty-five male habitual smokers were assigned to either a placebo (0.1mg nicotine cigarette), a 0.7mg, or a 1.5mg nicotine cigarette group. All subjects were in good health, reported that they regularly inhale smoke, that they smoked daily, and have for at least the past 3 months. Cigarette smoking is a serious health hazard affecting a sizeable proportion of the adult population. The addictive nature of cigarettes has been blamed for the difficulty smokers experience in achieving and maintaining abstinence. Cigarette cravings are frequently cited as a factor contributing to relapse. Addiction theories proposed independently by Wikler, Siegel, and Solomon view cravings as classically conditioned responses to internal or external cues. These responses are presumably multidimensional, having cognitive, emotional, and physiological manifestations.

This thesis proposes to examine German efforts in the United States in the years before American entry into the Second World War. This will be done by examining one Nazi agency: the German Library of Information which operated out of New York City from 1936 to 1941.

This study examines expansion of presidential power in terms of the establishment of the United States as a world economic and political power and the development of nuclear weapons.

This thesis is a study of the Mormon adoption program developed by the Mormons in response to the Indian slave trade in Utah, 1850-1880. It focuses on the Mormon justifications, as enumerated by Brigham Young, for the adoption policy and it links those justifications to expected results. Further this thesis compares the Mormon's expected results with the actual results of the adoption program through an analysis of historical accounts and Mormon ordinance records.

A national survey of bishops' wives was conducted to determine whether Reuben Hill's "Roller Coaster" model of family stress following a stressor event should be modified to include a honeymoon period when the precipitating event is viewed positively by the family. The honeymoon period was expected to be within the first year, and too few respondents were in their first year to give statistically significant evidence of such a pattern. Several measures did give non-significant evidence of a honeymoon phase, though.

This thesis is a description of the phonology of Salasaca Quichua (SQ), a member of the Quechua II or A language family. There are 26 phonemes which include three aspirated voiceless stops and three voiced stops.

Voiced stops have fricative allophones in intervocalic environments. There are two underspecified segments (/G/ and /N/) whose phonological realization depends on the environment which follows. The /G/ may be realized as [g], [ǥ], [k], or [x]. The /N/ may be realized as a bilabial, alveolar, alveopalatal, palatal or velar nasal.

Restrained eaters, those who chronically and severely restrict food intake in order to lose weight, are thought to exhibit thoughts and behaviors similar to those seen in semi-starved and eating disordered (bulimic and anorexic) individuals. A paradoxical tendency to overeat once food restraint is disinhibited has been noted in restrainers. Food and body weight preoccupation and hyperresponsiveness to external food cues have been hypothesized to occur in restrained individuals; however the literature reports conflicting results and these factors have not been thoroughly investigated. Cognitive factors which differentiate restrained eaters from nonrestrained eaters may affect information processing.

Plant use among the Lakota has been greatly reduced and in some cases, completely eliminated by the damming of the Missouri River by Oahe Dam. The development of specific antiviral therapy has increased the need for rapid viral diagnosis and necessitates a better understanding of viral epidemiology. The purposes of this study were to determine the efficiency of immunofluorescent assay employing monoclonal antibodies from commercial sources to detect respiratory virus antigens in clinical specimens and to define the epidemiology of respiratory viruses in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Throat swab, nasopharyngeal swabs and nasopharyngeal washes were excellent specimens for studying viral epidemiology; virus isolation rates were 7.7%, 33.2%, and 39.7%, respectively. The interaction of flame volatilized sodium with sulfur and silica (quartz) was studied under coal fired boiler conditions in a laminar flow reactor. Measured compositions of sodium, sulfur and quartz were bound together in a synthetic coal matrix and subject to various temperature profiles ranging from 900-1500°C and residence times ranging from 0.1 to 1.4 seconds. As well as studying the inorganic reactions, a detailed look was also spent on the actual combustion characteristics of the synthetic coal. These results are serendipitous in nature but deserve attention as well.

The present study investigated the effects of acute intoxication with ethanol on prose processing. Three groups of subjects were studied: males, females taking oral contraceptives, and females not taking oral contraceptives. Subjects were administered either 0.0 or 1.0 milliliter per kilogram of body weight of ethanol, and then read two long (400 words) and two short (200 words) expository prose passages from a computer screen. Immediately after reading each passage, subjects orally recalled the passages.

Overall, intoxicated subjects encoded prose passages significantly slower and recalled significantly less information from the passages than the sober subjects, and this difference could not …
