Hear about the tools one library used to assess their virtual reference service with text analysis research by using 6 semesters of 10,000 chat transcripts. They used Voyant and Lexos software to extract words and phrases from the chat transcripts and establish word counts and frequencies, then compared the vocabularies of librarians vs. students in chat reference interviews to improve communication between librarians and their user base; findings are being applied to reference tools and resources. This paper will present a case study of how Loyola Marymount University (LMU) evaluated the information literacy component across 72 required Rhetorical Arts course sections taken by 1272 freshmen in Spring 2014. Rhetorical Arts is designed to teach students the time- honored tradition of the “good person writing and speaking well for the public good.” The course requirements (as dictated by a common syllabus) include one face-to-face librarian-led workshop, and coursework requiring students to develop a research topic, create a research diary, and create an annotated bibliography. This presentation offers a case study of how one library’s assessment of datagathered from its public service desk led to changes and improvements in service. The William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) recorded all of the questions and answers asked at its Information Desk from Fall 2009 to the present using the Gimlet (http://gimlet.us) electronic question tracking system. A content analysis was performed on the data that led to advancements in signage and a new knowledge base of FAQ’s. In addition, new services were implemented related to technology and research that addressed user needs.

Curriculum mapping is a procedure for documenting and visualizing student learning at the programmatic level. The process allows libraries the opportunity to record where information literacy skills are taught across the curriculum in order to locate gaps and redundancies within a library instruction program. It also allows for alignment of the library’s learning outcomes with the learning outcomes important to the institution. This paper presents a review of the history of curriculum mapping, followed by a case study of how Loyola Marymount University (LMU) used the process to support information literacy in a new core curriculum.

This paper provides a framework for thinking about meaningful data visualization in ways that can be applied to routine statistics collected by libraries. An overview of common data display methods is provided, with an emphasis on tables, scatter plots, line charts, bar charts, histograms, pie charts, and infographics. Research on “best practices” in data visualization design is presented as well as a comparison of free online data visualization tools. Loyola Marymount University (LMU) designed a 4-module online tutorial to meet the information literacy outcomes associated with a First Year Seminar course. The four modules that comprise the tutorial (Starting Your Assignment, Types of Information, Finding and Evaluating Information, and Using Information Ethically) were integrated into each First Year Seminar course through Blackboard, the university's Learning Management System (LMS). After completing each tutorial module, students were also required to take a quiz. Reference and instruction librarians increasingly face the challenge of transforming traditional face-to-face library instruction to the digital environment in order to reach larger groups of users. This research report outlines the results of a multidisciplinary review of the literature concerning “best practices” in the design of information literacy tutorials. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) conducted a usability study to test Springshare’s LibAnswers product against “How Do I,” our own FAQ (frequently asked questions) web page. Our “How Do I” page featured a set of static links organized by broad category. Abstract Objective – The objective of this study was twofold: 1) to assess the effectiveness of curriculum changes made from the 2009 freshman English library instruction curriculum to the 2010 curriculum at Loyola Marymount University (LMU); and 2) to evaluate the effectiveness of library instruction delivered via a “blended” combination of face-to-face and online instruction versus online instruction alone. This study is a content analysis of reference questions and answers asked at an academic library Information Desk during the Fall 2010/Spring 2011 academic year. An Excel file was created consisting of Reference question statistics recorded using the Gimlet (http://gimlet.us) question tracking system. Loyola Marymount University's (LMU) Reference Department designed a rubric to measure student learning outcomes for freshman English. Students sequentially completed an "English 110 Library Research Worksheet” during library instruction. The rubric which is set up to analyze learning outcomes from parts of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education is applied to collected student worksheets. The Department undertook a multi-step process to try to calibrate the rubric and achieve consensus estimates of inter-rater reliability.
