Museum Professionals In Special Collections And Library Exhibition Development, Carrie Meyer, Darby Kurtz

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

In June 2021, the McGoogan Health Sciences Library opened the Wigton Heritage Center on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus. This facility serves as a welcome center and museum for the history of the UNMC campus and explores the history of the health sciences in Nebraska. You read that right—a library opened a museum. Special Collection and Archives (SCA) professionals exist in a unique environment that utilizes three cultural heritage and preservation professions—libraries, archives, and museums. The Wigton Heritage Center project explores how museum practices for exhibition development, environmental monitoring, and curatorial practice are utilized in a library environment. …

Customize And Outsource Exhibits: Not As Easy As You Think, Carrie Meyer, Darby Kurtz Aug 2023

Customize And Outsource Exhibits: Not As Easy As You Think, Carrie Meyer, Darby Kurtz

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

In the summer of 2019, UNMC’s McGoogan Health Sciences Library closed for renovation. At the same time, new construction of the Wigton Heritage Center, a museum dedicated to the history of UNMC and the health sciences in Nebraska, began. The team worked with an outside design firm on all the typical exhibition creation needs and then along came a pandemic, and a few other “glitches” along the way. In 2021, Phase 1a opened, and Phases 1b and 2 followed in 2022-2023. We will share the good, bad, and unfortunate lessons learned from our experience of building a museum—remotely—with multiple designers …

Migration Tales From A Small Consortium, Euemduan C. Osmera, Angela Kroeger, Keelan Weber

According to Oracle's white paper, Successful Data Migration, October 2011, up to 75% of new systems fail to meet expectations. That is quite a high number, and our small consortium felt this was true after we migrated to Ex Libris Alma/Primo VE in 2020! We often see librarians on Alma listservs asking for best practices, tips and tricks to manage data, or what metadata challenges to be aware of before migration. After working in our new system for two and a half years, we have insights based on our failures and successes. In this presentation, we will share warnings and …

It's Not Impossible! Digital Preservation Programs And How You Can Make One Too, Larissa Krayer Jun 2021

It's Not Impossible! Digital Preservation Programs And How You Can Make One Too, Larissa Krayer

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Digital preservation is more than a back-up. It ensures long-term access to digital content through policies, strategies, and actions. It needs to be addressed programmatically but it can be hard to know where to start. The Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library recently used assessment tools to define their current digital preservation environment and develop a proposal to implement a program that meets national standards within two years. The assessment exercise will allow the library to more strategically advocate for resources for digital preservation and gain buy-in from senior leadership.

Elevating Librarian-Mediated Search Services: When 2nd Best Isn't Good Enough, Danielle Westmark, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa L. Hartman Oct 2019

Elevating Librarian-Mediated Search Services: When 2nd Best Isn't Good Enough, Danielle Westmark, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa L. Hartman

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Objective: To optimize librarian-mediated search services, librarians must consider all aspects of their search service that affect service utilization and efficacy. The library literature provides little information concerning the format in which libraries are providing literature search results and even less on the effect of format on search service utilization.  At our academic health science library, the number of search requests received rose dramatically after we began providing results in RefShare format. RefShare is the collaboration tool available in ProQuest’s RefWorks®.  We wanted to know how other libraries were providing results and whether they had seen format affect search service …

Redefining Our Territory: Reaching Pre-Matriculation Students With Case-Based, Online Instruction, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa Hartman

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Online educational tools have made it possible for our library to claim some educational territory that was previously unavailable to us, the pre-matriculation period. During the summer of 2015 we were able to add a two-part, case-based, online tutorial to our incoming medical students’ pre-matriculation materials. We created the story of Sarah Pilger, a hypothetical, obese, pregnant teenager whose pregnancy is complicated by a fetal toxoplasmosis. The case introduces the incoming students to almost all the resources they might want to use while enrolled at UNMC and also introduces students to the roles of the many healthcare professionals who are …

Beyond Arl Diversity Initiatives: Peer Mentoring, Genevia Chamblee-Smith, Christian I.J. Minter

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Background: The purpose of this research project is to highlight the benefits of peer mentoring as an ongoing resource for career advancement and retention among alumni of the Association of Research Libraries’ Career Enhancement Program (CEP) and Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce (IRDW) program. We define peer mentoring as informal mentoring that happens between individuals to promote career success. This project is in response to “White Librarianship in Blackface: Diversity Initiatives in LIS” in which one of Hathcock’s criticisms of current diversity initiatives is the focus on increasing numbers without addressing long-term retention.

Methodology: The project was conducted through …
