Grand Canyon National Park comprises 1009 square miles of contrasting life zones and landscapes, with elevations ranging from 2500 feet at the Colorado River to more than 9000 feet of the North Rim. This area includes 117 miles of the Canyon, part of the Kaibab Plateua known as the North Rim and part of the Coconino Plateau or South Rim. Both formations are included in the Colorado Plateau (See Figures 1 and 2).

Several studies have been made of xeric forests in southern Michigan which have developed through secondary succession following the cutting of the presettlement vegetation. Brewer et al. (1973) described such an area in Allegan County, Michigan which was dominated by presettlement pine and is now dominated by oak. The oak forests of the Harvey Ott Preserve in Calhoun County, Michigan have been described by Catana (1967). Studies of the oak forests in the Haven Hill area in southeastern Michigan have been made by Thompson (1953). The general purpose of the present paper is to analyze community mental health services in Michigan with respect to the responsiveness of the system to the target community. In order to accomplish this goal, several variables must be considered.

First, historical precedents of the current mental health system will be examined to determine the responsibilities of the system to the citizenry. This is a study of the utilization of community mental health services by the Chicano population in a Western Michigan community. As members of the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States, the Chicanos are faced with many of the same social ills that plague other minorities. Consistently increasing urbanization has been a salient characteristic of American society in the 20th Century. As more and more people have moved into cities, suburbs, and metropolitan areas, state and local governments have found it necessary to regulate the use of land through zoning legislation and zoning ordinances. New York City first enacted a comprehensive zoning ordinance in 1916.¹ Since 1926, when the United States Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of zoning ordinances in the landmark decision of Euclid v Amber Realty Co,² virtually every urban area in the nation has been subjected to zoning.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine factors leading individuals to participate in the laetrile movement. Laetrile, a substance obtained from a variety of foods including apricot kernels, has been termed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be both ineffective in the treatment of cancer, and even dangerous when taken in large amounts. Even so, over 50,000 people in the United States are estimated to use this substance for the control and prevention of cancer. Clients' preferences for different theoretically derived approach were also found to be important determinants of counseling outcome. The readjustment problems that were encountered by the prisoners-of-war (POWs) were caused by their identification problems, the chief aspect of which was their defensive isolationism. These problems produced further difficulties for the individual POW in the behavioral category and for the entire POW group in their underlying distrust of the outside world. These also produced confused reactions, paranoid syndromes, and a lack of participation in military and civilian affairs, and were expressed in the POWs as fearful withdrawal and belligerent negation with anti-social overtones. Early research on the study of lesbianism was largely psychoanalytically oriented and contended that homosexuality was a form of psychopathology. Many have found that female homosexuals have a deep sense of inferiority and suffer from neuroticism. Recent investigation however, indicates that this is not necessarily the case. It has now been found that lesbians are no more neurotic than female heterosexuals. Furthermore, several other investigators have found lesbians to be better adjusted, in some respects, than heterosexual women.

Past research has demonstrated that empathy, traditionally defined as the ability to discriminate, label and then experience the emotional response of another, acts as an inhibitor of aggressive behavior. Additional evidence has shown an increase in empathic functioning can be the result of various empathy training strategies. It has recently been hypothesized that aggressive behavior might be decreased as empathic functioning increases. The Hand Test and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale were administered to 25 institutionalized (Mage = 80.00) and 25 community-living (Mage = 72.92) elderly females to investigate personality differences between the two groups, and to explore the relationship between personality and intelligence in regard to the aged. It was discussed that the results of the present study should be interpreted with caution, since significant age and educational differences were found between the groups that may have contributed to the results.
