Previous research on the incremental validity of the Learning Behaviors Scale (LBS; McDermott, Green, Francis, & Stott, 1999) has shown that good learning behaviors were associated with good academic achievement (Schaefer & McDermott, 1999; Yen, Konold, & McDermott, 2004). Additionally, research has indicated that learning behaviors account for appreciable variation in student grades and academic achievement test scores above and beyond the contribution of intelligence (Schaefer, 1996). This study investigated the effects of short-term peer tutoring, with interspersal or without interspersal, on sight word acquisition. Four first grade students and two second grade students participated in the study. Student dyads (i.e., 1 tutor and 1 tutee) were either in the without interspersal condition or in the interspersal condition. Using an AB single case design, student performance was measured and graphed in two ways, cumulative learning and student learning rate. Contrary to expectations, results indicated the overall cumulative learning measurement for students in the without interspersal condition acquired the greater number of words learned, required less instructional time, …

Psychological abuse in childhood is believed to have an affect on psychological wellbeing in adulthood, specifically in the area of substance abuse. Following the lead of studies in psychological abuse, substance abuse and protective factors, the present study examined the relationship between childhood psychological abuse and adult substance use, along with the role of protective factors in that relationship. Participants, consisting of college undergraduates, completed a series of measures of family cohesion, bonding, substance use, and psychological maltreatment. Effects Of Education On Gender Income Inequality In The United States, Jiang Li

This paper examines the relationship between gender income inequality and educational attainment level with reference to the United States (US). The population under consideration is divided into several groups based on their educational levels. Then gender income inequalities are calculated under each educational level. The total educational effect is shown to be composed of three effects. By measuring these effects, it is found that like past studies, more education reduces gender income inequality, but not in every case. Moreover, this paper explores the relative size of each of the component effects within the educational effect.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the tooling intervention, developed by Skinner, Skinner, and Cashwell (1998), through the use of verbal versus private reports of peers' prosocial behavior. Previous tootling studies have focused on private reports of prosocial behavior, but verbal reports of prosocial behaviors utilizing the tootling intervention have not been investigated. Two classrooms of 3rd grade students were taught to tootle by either verbally reporting or by privately writing down observed prosocial behaviors of their peers. The purpose of this study was to a) determine if school psychologist hypotheses of behavioral function would be consistent with direct behavioral observation data collected via computer program, b) determine if school psychologists agreed with the teacher's hypotheses on behavioral function, and c) determine if school psychologists agreed with each other on behavioral function based on information from the A-B-C logs. Minimal agreement was found between the computer-based hypotheses and the school psychologist's hypotheses, and between the school psychologists and the teacher hypotheses. Agreement on behavioral function was found in two of the cases among school psychologists.

The purpose of this thesis was to test the relationship between depression, communication competence (CC), and social support. This relationship is rooted in the premise that central to CC is one's ability to solicit and receive social support from interpersonal relationships in terms of 3 dimensions: assertiveness, responsiveness, and cognitive flexibility. It was hypothesized that depression is negatively associated to cognitive flexibility, and in tum the assertiveness and responsiveness CC dimensions are positively related to quality interpersonal relationships and the social support received from such relationships. This exploratory study examined the specific topographies and corresponding demographic information of restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors, interests and activities of children with autism, and evaluated developmental differences between age groups. However, results from MDMA discrimination studies across different laboratories have not been consistent. Habitat and fish assemblage data were collected on 12 streams in northern Michigan to assess the applicability of a habitat rating system developed for low gradient streams in Wisconsin in determining stream health in low gradient coldwater streams in northern Michigan. The American respondents were selected from a convenience sample of students from a Midwestern university. The Turkish respondents consisted of a convenience sample of undergraduate and graduate students from two urban universities. Ninety-six surveys were given in Turkey and 113 were given in the United States to currently enrolled female and male undergraduate and graduate students between the ages of 17 and 51, yielding 204 usable surveys at a 97 percent response rate. Exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is suspected to produce long lasting cognitive deficits in children and adults. This study assessed the effects of dietary exposure to a commercial mixture of PCBs on spatial learning and memory in Fisher 344 rats. Aroclor 1254 (0, 10, 50 ppm) was administered for 28 consecutive days in the daily diet. Seven days after the last dietary exposure, acquisition training began in an eight-arm radial maze. Lake Macatawa, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, has been impaired by nonpoint source pollution from agriculture. A Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), developed by the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, established a 60% reduction goal in phosphorus load by 2008. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Asian Indian immigrant women raising children in the U.S. as value contradictions between Asian Indian culture and U.S. culture. Relational dialectics in parent-child relationships among Asian Indian immigrant women and their children was also explored using the dialectcial perspective. Participants for the study were 20 Asian Indian women chosen randomly from the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek (MI) AI community who participated in one-one-interviews.
