Taking Clinical Judgment Out Of The Equation : A Call For The Standardization Of Mci Diagnostic Criteria And Construction Of A Model To Predict Conversion To Dementia., Adam Tyler Gerstenecker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the diagnostic criteria for mild cognitive impairment have evolved considerably since their inception, they remain varied and able to be interpreted and implemented in different ways depending on the judgment of the clinician. Because of this issue, a wide range of incidence, prevalence, and conversion rates are found in the research literature. Using data collected from 400 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment, limitations inherent in current mild cognitive impairment diagnostic criteria were addressed. First, using Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative diagnostic criteria, an equation was constructed to predict conversion from mild cognitive impairment to dementia by analyzing the predictive …
Measuring Mindful Interoception : Development Of The Mindful Interoception Sampling Task (Mist)., Samuel J. Dreeben
Measuring Mindful Interoception : Development Of The Mindful Interoception Sampling Task (Mist)., Samuel J. Dreeben
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sustained, non-evaluative, present moment interoception or ? "mindful interoception" (MI) is a central feature of many widely practiced clinical interventions, including mindfulness-based therapies, cognitive-behavioral therapies, focusing-oriented psychotherapy, and Gestalt therapy. However, to date, no valid measures of MI have been developed. The lack of such a measure has precluded attempts to discern A) to what extent MI ability changes as a function of MI-based therapies, B) if change in MI mediates symptom reduction, and C) if individual differences in MI ability are associated with anxiety, mindfulness, and other hypothetically related constructs. The purpose of the current study was to develop …

The purpose of this study was to compare changes in static and countermovement jump variables across a competitive season of collegiate soccer to estimated training load and subjective measures of fatigue. Monitoring data from 21 male collegiate soccer players were retrospectively examined. Nine vertical jump sessions occurred across the season in addition to daily training load assessment and daily mood-state assessment. Group average changes from the first testing session were calculated and compared to the group average training load for the 7 days preceding each vertical jump testing session for static and countermovement jump height and allometrically scaled peak power. …
Physical And Technical Demands Of Women’S Collegiate Soccer, Ryan Alexander
Physical And Technical Demands Of Women’S Collegiate Soccer, Ryan Alexander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the physical and technical demands of the women’s college soccer game through a case study approach. With advancements in technology, motion analysis has become commonplace in most professional environments. However, the literature on amateur soccer is quite scarce and warrants more attention. The aims of this dissertation were: 1) to describe the physical demands of each position for a women’s college soccer player as they relate to total distance covered, efforts, and distance covered in high-speed velocity bands, 2) explore the variation in physical performance during a competitive season, and 3) compare …
Toying With Americanization: The Impact Of Corporate Paternalism On Immigrant Children In Early 20th Century Colorado Coal Mining Communities, Jamie Devine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the early 20th century coal miners' lives in Southern Colorado were fraught with violence and hardships. Many immigrant men brought their families to remote areas to live in company towns and work in coal mines. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) attempted to assimilate these ethnically diverse immigrants into American society. One method was to impart American values onto the children living in these company towns. CF&I purchased American toys for the children during Christmas and created kindergartens for the children to attend with the intent of imparting American values. In contrast, the parents of these children …
Breaking Your Own Heart: A Qualitative Study Of Grief After Initiating A Breakup, Laura P. Finkelstein
Breaking Your Own Heart: A Qualitative Study Of Grief After Initiating A Breakup, Laura P. Finkelstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explored how young adult initiators of romantic relationship dissolution experience grief and support through the breakup process. Participants were six female and three male undergraduate students at The University of Idaho, all of whom had initiated a breakup within the past six months. Initiators responded to a variety of questions about their experiences in a semi-structured interview. Based on a qualitative analysis of these interviews, a variety of themes emerged highlighting the often minimized experience of initiating a romantic relationship breakup in early adulthood. Additional analysis compared themes based on participant gender and age. Results suggest that initiators …

The Effect Of Romantic Jealousy On Self-Control: An Examination Of Trait Constructs And Sex Differences Based On Survey And Experimental Data, Lyndsay A. Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A large body of research has demonstrated that the experience of romantic jealousy is often associated with a variety of negative outcomes. However, evolutionary psychologists have provided evidence that jealousy is an adaptive emotion that can aid with mate retention. Together these lines of research suggest that jealousy may at times work to protect and enhance one’s relationship, whereas in other cases it could lead to harmful consequences. Considering the varying outcomes of jealousy, it is critical that research explore more specifically how this complex state operates and how it affects individuals’ functioning. In the present research I conducted 2 …
Stakeholder Perceptions Of A University Response To Crisis, Katherine M. Kelley
Stakeholder Perceptions Of A University Response To Crisis, Katherine M. Kelley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to contribute to current theory-driven research in crisis communication by examining the perceptions of multiple stakeholder groups to a university crisis response strategy. Two main questions were examined in this dissertation. The first question attempted to determine if a significant difference existed between stakeholder groups and their perception of university reputation, responsibility for the crisis, and potential supportive behaviors toward the university following the university’s response to a crisis. The second asked if Coombs’s Situational Crisis Communication Theory is a practical application for universities.
The participants were from 4 stakeholder groups associated with a …
Explaining Combat Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: An Integrated Mental Illness And Military Process Model, Mandi F. Deitz
Explaining Combat Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: An Integrated Mental Illness And Military Process Model, Mandi F. Deitz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to examine a process model of combat-related and mental-illness related processes that explain increased likelihood of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This dissertation proposed the development of PTSD may occur due to cultural, social, and self-related pathways associated with veterans’ dual encounters with combat (i.e., severity) and mental illness symptoms. Participants were 195 military veterans recruited from multiple sites and strategies to maximize sample size and representation. Participants were asked to complete several self-administered assessment inventories, including: the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Military, the Trauma Symptom Checklist, the Combat Experiences scale, the Self-Stigma of Mental …
Attitudes Toward Suicide, Mental Health, And Help-Seeking Behavior Among African Immigrants: An Ecological Perspective, Sheri A. Nsamenang
Attitudes Toward Suicide, Mental Health, And Help-Seeking Behavior Among African Immigrants: An Ecological Perspective, Sheri A. Nsamenang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The population of Africans in the United States is growing, yet little is known about the impact of migration on the attitudes of African immigrants toward suicide, mental health, and helpseeking behavior. Migration entails movement from one cultural environment to another, and the process requires adaptation to the host country. According to Ecological Theory, interactions between the societal structures, values, and beliefs of the host country, cultural values from the country of origin, and individual-level characteristics may affect mental health-related attitudes and behaviors. As such, the current study used mixed methods, administered via online survey, to investigate socio-cultural predictors of …
The Effects Of Working Memory On Brain-Computer Interface Performance, Samantha A. Sprague
The Effects Of Working Memory On Brain-Computer Interface Performance, Samantha A. Sprague
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neurodegenerative disorders can cause individuals to lose control of their muscles until they are unable to move or communicate. The development of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has provided these individuals with an alternative method of communication that does not require muscle movement. Recent research has shown the impact psychological factors have on BCI performance and has highlighted the need for further research. Working memory is one psychological factor that could influence BCI performance. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the relationship between working memory and brain-computer interface performance. The results indicate that …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explored the relationship between the therapeutic alliance and perceptions of therapist empathy and genuineness through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Alliance, empathy, and genuineness are each integral parts of the therapeutic relationship. Prior meta-analyses demonstrated that alliance, empathy, and genuineness each had a moderate relationship to therapy outcome. No previous analysis has explored how therapist empathy and genuineness contribute to the therapeutic alliance. Studies for this analysis were obtained through a multi-part search strategy. Out of 2,141 obtained abstracts, 46 studies contained enough data for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Thirty-six studies reported alliance/empathy relationships, six studies reported alliance/genuineness …

Analysis Of Social Costs Of Gentrification In Over-The-Rhine : A Qualitative Approach., Shireen Deobhakta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the social costs and benefits of the gentrification process using qualitative methods. The neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine (OTR) in Cincinnati, Ohio, represents certain universalities of gentrification in an older city, and was thus chosen as the site for a case study. OTR’s prime location between the Central Business District and uptown medical and university community has spurred rapid gentrification, particularly since the early 2000s. Using in-depth interviews, participant observation, a focus group, and print media, this dissertation sought to understand the social costs and benefits of gentrification in OTR. Adopting the language of “revitalization” and “renaissance,” the city …
Putting The Person First : An Examination Of Thought Disorder And Personality Heterogeneity In Schizophrenia., Catherine Rose Robertson
Putting The Person First : An Examination Of Thought Disorder And Personality Heterogeneity In Schizophrenia., Catherine Rose Robertson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Recovery Model of mental illness, emerging as the new zeitgeist in regards to treatment, emphasizes the optimization of functioning for each individual, using personal strengths and preferences to drive the recovery process. Thought disorder has long been considered a core symptom of schizophrenia and has been implicated in multiple domains of functional outcome. In spite of its relationship to functioning and substantial heterogeneity of the phenomenon, little to no research has examined potential factors which may be related to these differences in thought disorder and its related domains of functioning. The current study proposes that “normal” personality traits, such …

The Mediating And Moderating Effects Of Coping Mechanisms Following High School Victimization, Kevin D. Hyatt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Victimization from bullying has become a more serious issue as available avenues for bullying have increased and as the media has been alerted to the devastating effects of the phenomenon. Victimization has been linked to increased externalizing and internalizing disorders including depression, anxiety, stress, and at its worst suicide. Research has been focused on the negative outcomes following victimization, with some authors only recently examining the buffering or exacerbating effects of coping mechanisms. Participants (n=642) from a moderately sized southeastern university completed a survey to examine problem-focused and emotion-focused coping as potential moderators and maladaptive coping as a potential mediator …

The Effects Of Foreign Aid For Health On Health Outcomes In Developing Countries, Leah R. Burfeind
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effectiveness of foreign aid for health on the child mortality rate in developing countries. This is a controversial subject as many economists have found grounds to believe it is effective while others provide rationale for why it is ineffective. Based on panel data analysis, this study looks at the effects of external resources for health as a percentage of health spending on the child mortality rate in developing countries to determine how effective aid for health is in terms of improving health outcomes. With an understanding of the current nature of …
Global Capitalism And The Energy Crisis: Challenges And Opportunities Associated With A Transition To Renewables, Hillary Fronk
Global Capitalism And The Energy Crisis: Challenges And Opportunities Associated With A Transition To Renewables, Hillary Fronk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels have provided a cheap and efficient source of energy. Reliance on fossil fuels, especially oil, supported economic growth under capitalism but also has led to climate change. As peak oil approaches, a transition towards renewable sources of energy is mandatory for ensuring future prospects of development and for reducing the effects of climate change. The transition to renewable energy sources could be made smoother if the subsidies provided to the fossil fuel industry were phased out and governments provided incentives for initial investment, financing for research and development, and direct investment. With reference to …
The Impact Of Internet Gis On Access To Water Quality Information, Joseph H. Hoover
The Impact Of Internet Gis On Access To Water Quality Information, Joseph H. Hoover
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Empowering citizens to comprehend complex environmental issues affecting their daily lives is essential to sustaining a healthy and informed public. The work of many environmental nongovernmental organizations (ENGOs) and institutions of higher education (IHEs) center around helping their stakeholders become informed of, and in turn, better understand complex environmental problems. However, providing individual stakeholders with knowledge about environmental issues that is easily accessible and understandable represents a recurring challenge in today's society. As a result, a gap continues to exist between that which is known about environmental problems and the public's awareness and understanding of those issues. Arsenic contamination of …
The Climate Emergency And The Need For Global Climate Stabilization: The Role Of Energy Efficiency In Climate Policy, Amy G. Laughlin
The Climate Emergency And The Need For Global Climate Stabilization: The Role Of Energy Efficiency In Climate Policy, Amy G. Laughlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Global climate change is a worldwide challenge requiring a coordinated, international policy response. However, political pressures and disagreements between developed and developing countries have obstructed past climate negotiations and have stalled the adoption of binding greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Despite slowmoving international climate negotiations and comprehensive climate policies, many countries have turned to energy efficiency as a politically feasible tool to lower energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Economists debate the effectiveness of energy efficiency policies due differing perspectives regarding the relationship between energy use and economic growth. Because of this fundamental disagreement, economists often come to different conclusions …
Changing Geographic Patterns Of High- And Low-Income Groups In Eight United States Metropolitan Areas, Taylor J. Hafley
Changing Geographic Patterns Of High- And Low-Income Groups In Eight United States Metropolitan Areas, Taylor J. Hafley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Income segregation produces unequal social outcomes and has steadily increased since the 1970s. High-poverty neighborhoods suffer from low performing schools, fewer jobs, an evaporation of local role models (Wilson 1987; Reardon and Bischoff 2011a). Recent evidence suggests growing income inequality influences the segregation of affluence more than the segregation of poverty (Reardon and Bischoff 2011b). Metropolitan areas that display strong population and economic growth are susceptible to higher levels of income inequality. I use three unique quantitative approaches to measure the segregation of affluence and poverty in a comparison of four metropolitan areas exhibiting strong growth to four metros with …
Framing The Fight: Women's Use Of Rhetorical Coercion To Gain Political Empowerment From Revolutionary Participation—The Cases Of El Salvador, Guatemala, And Eritrea, Kyleanne M. Hunter
Framing The Fight: Women's Use Of Rhetorical Coercion To Gain Political Empowerment From Revolutionary Participation—The Cases Of El Salvador, Guatemala, And Eritrea, Kyleanne M. Hunter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The below paper examines women’s ability to translate participation in antigovernment movement into political empowerment in the post-conflict government. I use the theory of Rhetorical Coercion to explore how the way in which women frame their participation impacts their ability to achieve increased political empowerment. I find that nationalistic frames are more successful than women’s-specific frames in women’s ability to achieve full empowerment and lasting rights. Using the cases of El Salvador, Guatemala and Eritrea I explore the inputs to a successful rhetorical strategy and the stumbling blocks to translating participation into national inclusion.
Governing Confidence: Rhetoric, Affect, And Post-Crisis Financial Education, Samuel M. Jay
Governing Confidence: Rhetoric, Affect, And Post-Crisis Financial Education, Samuel M. Jay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The 2007-08 financial crisis has been characterized as a “crisis of confidence” (Akerlof & Shiller, 2009), a span of time during which the non-discursive energy needed to compel Americans towards profit-producing decisions evaporated. Amidst this decline, the US lost its competitive edge in the global marketplace. Initial responses to the crisis by national leaders failed, triggering a revision to reasoning that resulted in a new argument taken up by central government: the lack of financial knowledge experienced by the majority of US citizens led to a population of ignorant decision makers lacking the confidence needed to take the risks necessary …
A Legacy Of Letters: The Construction Of An Aging Masculine Identity, K. Tiffani Baldwin
A Legacy Of Letters: The Construction Of An Aging Masculine Identity, K. Tiffani Baldwin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to investigate the construction of a masculine identity through a qualitative analysis of personal letters written by an aging man over the last two decades of his life (age 68-89). Symbolic interaction and life-span communication are the guiding frameworks behind the development of the research questions and the subsequent analyses. Research question one asks: What themes emerge from the personal letters written by an aging man? The following two themes emerged: a) relationality, and b) age and aging. Research question two asks: What do the metaphors that emerge from personal letters reveal about the …
Social Identity And Social Learning Factors As Predictors Of Intergroup And Intragroup Social Aggressiveness In College Sororities, Bethany L. Doran
Social Identity And Social Learning Factors As Predictors Of Intergroup And Intragroup Social Aggressiveness In College Sororities, Bethany L. Doran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and social learning theory (Bandura, 1977) as theoretical guides, the main objective of the present study was to determine if individual and group identity factors--unstable self-esteem, narcissism, sorority member intragroup status, collective narcissism, sorority intergroup status, sorority intergroup social aggressiveness, and sorority intragroup social aggressiveness--were predictive of young adult females' intergroup and intragroup social aggressiveness in college sororities. Participants for the present study included (N= 222) young adult females who are current members of college sororities in the United States. Path analysis revealed that many individual identity and group identity factors predict …
Future Work: Denver Metropolitan Area Jobs In A Globalizing Economy, Sharon Gabel
Future Work: Denver Metropolitan Area Jobs In A Globalizing Economy, Sharon Gabel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the past twenty years, globalization has had both observable and intangible impacts on business and labor markets at the local level, that are of critical importance to communities and the people who inhabit them. While impacts of global economic change on local labor markets have been anticipated, there is little insight in the research literature into the empirical dynamics of the interrelationship between global economic change and local labor markets. This study examined the impacts of globalization on local labor markets through three lenses: (1) quantitative analysis of employment change in the Denver Metropolitan Region local labor market, (2) …
Heavy Drinking Behaviors And Parental Influence Among Greek Affiliated College Students, Melodie Harris
Heavy Drinking Behaviors And Parental Influence Among Greek Affiliated College Students, Melodie Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heavy drinking behaviors have been observed in relation to fraternity and sorority membership. Some have argued that this relationship persists as a result of the drinking-conducive social environments of Greek organizations, but others have suggested that this relationship may be spurious. Using data from The Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (n = 10,904) the link between Greek affiliation, alcohol consumption, and parental influence was examined through the lens of social learning theory. It was hypothesized that members of Greek organizations would report higher levels of drinking compared to others and that the inclusion of the variable of …
