Urban Insurrections: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach Toward An Integrated Typology, James Russell Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility and appropriateness of employing a multi-disciplinary approach in the study of urban insurrections in an effort to construct a typology which would include all of the elements common to each disorder. The multi-disciplinary method is necessitated by the biases which are inherent in any analysis that is restricted to either a psychological, sociological, or politico-historical treatment of episodes of collective behavior. All of the disciplines make major contributions to any analysis, but it is the contention of this writer that the disciplines must be integrated before the most accurate depiction …

Selected Determinants Of The Hiring Policy Of Employers Relative To Businesses In Five Counties Of South Dakota, Don Martin

Description of the Problem For nearly everyone in our society, remunerative work has provided a meaningful role. It also provided an avenue for the attainment of respect, dignity, and the essentials of the "good life." On the other hand, unemployment has necessitated reliance on programs for the indigent and unemployed. The central focus of this study was the Janus-headed problem of unemployment and underemployment. The approach was oriented to a level of organization which has not previously been adequately explored. Unlike most of the studies which have attempted to meliorate the exigencies of unemployment, this study focused on the needs …

A Conceptual Analysis Of Alienation In Current Theory And Research, Lanny Aron Neider Jan 1971

A Conceptual Analysis Of Alienation In Current Theory And Research, Lanny Aron Neider

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the assumed relationship between theory and research with respect to alienation. The basic hypothesis of this study is that empirical research on alienation would be influenced by existing theoretical formulations on the topic. It is argued that Melvin Seaman's 1959 conceptualization of alienation would constitute the major theoretical influence inasmuch as it alone provided a systematic set of researchable meanings. To test this basic hypothesis, four sub-hypotheses were developed: (1) Based upon Seeman's five dimensional scheme one should expect a fairly equal emphasis on the examination of all dimensions of alienation in …

The basic objective was to explore the nature and extent of this relation. Literature was reviewed dealing with the relation of reference groups to classical and contemporary theory. Literature related to reference theory dealing with medical students and ministerial specialization was also dealt with. The basic theoretical model used was that of Merton. He related reference group theory to the occupational …

A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz Jan 1971

A Feasibility Model For Farm Supply Firm Mergers, Donald R. Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is currently witnessing a revolutionary change in its elevator-farm supply industry. Technology applied in all phases of the industry -- production, processing, and distribution -- has had an impact upon the structure of the industry. Some of the changes taking place within the industry have been fostered by changes in other sectors of the economy. Employment opportunities and increasing wage rates have provided many marginal firm operators more favorable alternatives outside the elevator-farm supply business. Simultaneously, economic growth has encouraged new investments in larger grain handling and farm supply firms, thus hastening the adoption of technological developments. These …

A Study Of Inequalities In Farm Real Estate Assessment In South Dakota, Norman Victor Strand Jan 1935

A Study Of Inequalities In Farm Real Estate Assessment In South Dakota, Norman Victor Strand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the few beneficial effects of the recent business depression has been the focusing of an increased amount of attention on taxes and tax systems. Research agencies, tax commissions and citizens tax organizations have given the matter thorough study. As a result of increased knowledge of the widespread havoc caused by excessive taxation of general property, many states which formerly obtained most of their revenue from general property taxes, have resorted to supplementary forms of taxation, such as income taxes, sales taxes, corporation taxes, and others. It is beyond the scope of this paper to consider these sources of …

A Study Of Economic Activity In South Dakota, Glenn Aldrich Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is undoubtedly true that now, more than at any time previously, statistical analyses hold an increasingly important place in the business world. It is decidedly important to be the man in business, whether he be farmer, manufacturer, or retailer, that he knows what the trend of business has been in the past, and what the current trend is, so that he may anticipate changes which statistical analyses show are taking place in his particular phase of business or industry. As it applies to smaller units of business, so does it apply to the whole business structure. This study has …

An Analysis Of The Bank Credit Situation In South Dakota, Roy James Smith Jan 1934

An Analysis Of The Bank Credit Situation In South Dakota, Roy James Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was planned as a preliminary survey of the short time credit problems of South Dakota. Although considerable information had been gathered concerning long time credits, no investigation had been made in the short time credit field; consequently the study of short time credits was regarded merely as an extension of the previous field of study. An investigation in this field was expected to be valuable since the efficient operation of the farming business depends in many instances on ready access to a cheap supply of short time credit.

Reaction To Price Change By South Dakota Farmers, John Gordon Mcneely Jan 1934

Reaction To Price Change By South Dakota Farmers, John Gordon Mcneely

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is one of the newest of the important agricultural states. In 1900, many parts of South Dakota were still in the process of being settled. Inspired by the double incentive of high prices and helping to win the war, South Dakota and United States agriculture had expanded to unprecedented levels by 1920.

Social Adjustments Of Physically Handicapped Persons, Marie Van Maanen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Life is a series of adjustments to environments, and he who is most versatile in making adjustments is likely to be the first to climb the ladder to success. "Success does not consist in achieving a certain standards. It does consist in living up to the limit of one's abilities. If such is the case then it behooves each individual, no matter what his inherited mental capacity or his physical prowess, to make the most of his environment. He who has been deprived of some of his physical faculties has a greater task of adjustment to his environment than the …

The Founding Of The Brookings Register, Neva Whaley Jan 1929

The Founding Of The Brookings Register, Neva Whaley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thus in this “History of the Brookings Register,” I am producing an effect. This effect had to have a cause. This cause was the development and success of the paper, which is in turn is the effect of there being some cause for its development. That cause is the town of Brookings. What I have been trying to say is that without the town of Brookings there would have been no Brookings Register. Does it not seem logical then, to take up a brief history of the found and settlement of this town?
