Social And Emotional Development Of Toddlers Post-Covid-19 Pandemic, Alice M. Bygd

Counselor Education Capstones

The COVID-19 pandemic created a significantly different world for infants and very young children to grow and develop their social and emotional skills. These infants are now today’s toddlers. They were born or spent the earliest months of their lives in a society that was lacking the naturally occurring social and emotional experiences that children have had in the past. Research on the social and emotional development of young children since the COVID-19 pandemic is lacking greatly. This is due to how close the lived experiences of a pandemic for society are to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The …

The role of a college counselor could be an ideal mentor and advocate for those students who may be at a disadvantage, such as a first-generation student. The specific barriers that first-generation students experience that differ from continuing-generation students are discussed. Additionally, the …

Creating Student Leaders: Strategies For Midwest College, Ryan Hollibaugh

Leadership Education Capstones

The need to build effective work teams and leaders is crucial to the success of a work team. This becomes difficult in a college setting when a manager employs college students. Employing college students means every year managers are losing senior classes and replacing graduates with new workers. This results in teams losing the most experienced workers and oftentimes team leaders. To counteract this, managers are constantly having to find new leaders on a yearly basis and also continue to develop leaders. This is a challenging task and results in transition periods while new employees and the new leader are …

Selling Graduation: Higher Education And The Loaning Of Liberation, Annie Pocklington, Elizabeth J. Flanagan, Christopher Bodenheimer Knaus

Essays in Education

While the costs to attend college continue to rise exponentially, a bachelor’s degree is held up as required for economic stability within the U.S. and across the globe. With drastic disparities in earning potentials after graduation reduced by racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ableism, and related structural disparities, the value of a degree continues to be questioned, especially for historically marginalized communities. As the loan industrial complex continues to profit off of students, President Biden has offered $10,000 in student loan relief for some borrowers, though this action has been blocked by federal courts and is currently on hold. Whether Biden’s …

Political Discourse On Women Of Color, Briel Thelen Apr 2023

Political Discourse On Women Of Color, Briel Thelen

Research & Creative Achievement Day

In the last 50 years political discourse that surrounds women of color (WOC) has changed in numerous ways. There has been an at times slow and at other times fast rise in the assertion that WOC in political movements are radical and even dangerous, and that their stances threaten American democracy. However, my research will look at how the erasure of contributions and actions of WOC in the past has impacted the direct and focused dialogue of today.

Today, politicians, news outlets, political commentators, and consequently lay American citizens will critique progressive WOC in political movements as more radical than …

Self-As-Doer Identity And Health Behaviors: How Approach And Avoidant Orientation Correlate With Healthy Eating, Cooper Scheldroup, Kaitlyn Rusch, Katelyn Kelley, Abree Dieterman

Research & Creative Achievement Day

Introduction: The self-as-doer identity, an identity which describes one in correspondence with doing a behavior, has shown to improve healthy eating behaviors but less is known about how the orientation toward the doer identity (i.e., approach vs avoidant) might affect healthy eating behaviors. Approach motivation puts energy towards achieving a positive stimulus whereas avoidant motivation uses energy to avoid an aversive stimulus. Research indicates that approach goals are simpler to implement and may be better for initial behavioral enactment, while avoidance goals may be better for behavior maintenance.

Although research suggests that approach goals may be successful in behavioral change …

Researchers have shown that elite level athletes may be at a higher risk for suicide, with possible risks including injury, pressure, and substance abuse. Due to the high-stress levels of student athletes, this study was created to explore whether guided imagery (GI) can help student athletes reduce symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety.GI has been shown to decrease depression and anxiety among a variety of populations, but less work has explored the role that GI has in student athletes. Therefore, it was hypothesized that GI will reduce stress, and …

Effects Of Labetolol On Sign Tracking, Cassidy Bos, Brandon Yates, Liam Kubitschek, John Holden

Research & Creative Achievement Day

Sign tracking is defined as when an organism interacts with a conditioned stimulus that signals something desired. This is comparable to when a drug addict is engaging in drug seeking behaviors after interacting with a stimulus which could be associated with drug use. Reducing this type of behavior in addicts who are trying to overcome drug dependence may help prevent relapse. One drug which could be useful is Labetalol, which is an alpha and beta-blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). 17 male Sprague Dawley rats were conditioned over the course of 5 days to associate the …

Implications For Counseling High School Student Athletes In A School Setting, Tristan Schmidtknecht

Counselor Education Capstones

Career counseling is a vital part of the high school counselor’s job. There are unique considerations for every student that transitions from high school to college but the transition process for the prospective student-athlete is especially complicated. The role of the counselor is discussed to begin the literature review, followed by a review of the academic eligibility information that counselors need to be aware of. Academic implications for the student-athlete such as choosing a school and a major are then discussed before transitioning to issues student-athletes may face upon arriving at college. These issues include time management skills, mental health …

This panel explores how the lover’s leap narrative and its representation of Native American figures has been used to forge distinctive visions of public memory both in and beyond Winona, Minnesota. For most, details of the lover’s leap are reduced to Wenonah’s fatal action, specifically how she protested her family’s rigid customs of arranged marriage by jumping to her death from a bluff atop the Mississippi River. The goal of this panel is to offer a fuller account of the purposes this story has served in popular memory and the implications of its persistence for different audiences, past and present. …

International Undergraduates Are Not A Resource For Neocolonial Exploitation, Mathew H. Gendle, Amanda Tapler Mar 2023

International Undergraduates Are Not A Resource For Neocolonial Exploitation, Mathew H. Gendle, Amanda Tapler

Essays in Education

Policies developed to internationalize academic institutions in the U.S. that include admission strategies to increase international student populations must consider potential negative and ethical outcomes. Such policies may inadvertently exploit international students to generate revenue, increase rankings, meet diversity targets, and conduct unrecognized and uncompensated campus labor. However, policies based on mutually beneficial outcomes will diversify U.S. institutions, while also incentivizing the return of benefits derived from this education back to the students’ home communities.

College Administrator Experiences: A Phenomenological Study Of Higher Education Leadership In American Prisons, Donavan Bailey

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Higher education for the incarcerated (HEP) is a re-energized phenomenon in the age of criminal justice reform and social change. Following the 2015 Second Chance Pell Grant Experimental Initiative (SCP), which granted select colleges tuition funding for prisoners, HEP grew exponentially. The successes of the SCP laid the groundwork for the 2020 FASFA Simplification Act. In July 2023 the 2020 FSA begins, and all those imprisoned within America may access Pell Grant Funds for higher education. Despite momentous efforts to bring higher education to the incarcerated, HEP grapples with continued challenges and lacks unified, evidence-based competency equal to normative higher …
