Avoidance Behavior In The Elderly Driver, Mark Graves Apr 1996

Avoidance Behavior In The Elderly Driver, Mark Graves

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Do older drivers modify their driving habits in response to functional impairment? Older drivers who avoid challenging driving situations were compared with non-avoiders, to determine whether functional limitations were related to avoidance and whether avoidance is related to reducing crash risk. Results showed that, on the average, older drivers reported avoiding driving at night, on high traffic roads, on high speed roads, and in rush hour traffic while not avoiding left turns, driving in the rain, and driving alone. Subjects were placed into groups based on their cognitive and visual abilities. It was found that older drivers with an impaired …

The Cross-Cultural Use Of Sexually Explicit Language To Express Anger And Aggression, Deanna May Apr 1996

The Cross-Cultural Use Of Sexually Explicit Language To Express Anger And Aggression, Deanna May

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Freud postulated that the instincts of sex and aggression are fused. One possible example of the expression of this fusion is the use of sexually explicit language to convey anger and aggression. If this usage is universal, then it may be construed as evidence for Freud's theory. The present study attempted to determine the pervasiveness of the use of sexually explicit language to express anger and aggression (SEL). Thirty-one epresentatives of languages other than American English completed questionnaires detailing the use of SEL in their native cultures. Results indicated that 28 of the respondents reported use of SEL in their …

The Authoritarian Personality And Economic Distress, Kenneth Hinton Apr 1996

The Authoritarian Personality And Economic Distress, Kenneth Hinton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this study, I combined the personality and social indicator approaches of authoritarianism to determine if these separate approaches reflect similar constructs, and also examined whether economic distress increases authoritarianism and its internal coherence. The writer, in contrast with the time-series designs used in previous social-indicator studies, controlled for extraneous historical events by sampling individuals within the same time period. One hundred and sixty-one employed and 41 unemployed adult manufacturing workers completed a ninety-five-item questionnaire. The questionnaire contained a short version of the right-wing authoritarianism scale (RWA), items reflecting the social indicators of authoritarianism, and both objective (family income, employment …

An Intraorganizational Study Of Communication Effectiveness At United Way Of America: How Effective Is United Way Of America National Corporate Leadership Staff At Communicating To Local United Way Campaign Professionals?, Tracy Nilles

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The researcher examines communication effectiveness within the National Corporate Leadership program, which is a service provided by United Way of America. The UWA NCL program is designed to work with local United Ways to increase contributions at their locales. I attempted to determine whether or not the UWA NCL staff respond to telephone calls promptly, are helpful when contacted, and provide adequate levels of communication to local campaign professionals, and are perceived as beneficial. Local United Ways are classified by metro size (IXI) based on amount of funds raised and are grouped geographically into five regions of the country. For …
