This collection “Same Sex Marriage and the Law: An Oral History Project” is comprised of 16 interviews with attorneys--who participated in the 2013 case of Obergefell v. Hodges that challenged Kentucky’s laws related to recognition of same-sex marriages--and couples involved in the movement who sought change and hope for equality.

Published on the SMS-I-Media Tourism Express, a bi-lingual weekly ejournal, with the Wechat public account TourismExpress, this article introduces the origin and customs of the Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year. It also gives a brief introduction to the festival's related background knowledge such as the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the 24 Chinese solar terms, the Chinese Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, the Twelve Chinese zodiac animals, as well as the relationship between them and the Western zodiac signs.

Dehexing Postwar West Balkan Masculinities: The Case Of Bosnia, Croatia, And Serbia, 1998 To 2015, Marko Dumančić

History Faculty Publications

Focusing on Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, this article examines film and music that emerged in the region since the end of the Yugoslav Wars of Succession. We analyze how the uncertainties of the postwar era facilitated a dynamic field of cultural contestation in which the music and film industries simultaneously challenge and affirm normative masculine sociocultural roles. Although traditional norms have not lost their primacy in public life, we emphasize the fact that attitudes toward masculinity have, in general, become increasingly ambiguous and multivalent. While local sociological studies accurately observe that violence and intolerance constitute central traits for the majority …

What factors help or hinder democratization in China? Democracy in China is not an unknown term, but the difficulty of making “democratic” reforms in China has raised the question of if China will democratize. This literature review and analysis will examine the factors, which help or hinder democratization in China through economic and cultural means. By using a literature review as well as reviewing the concepts of democracy and prerequisites thereof, three scenarios for democratization will be determined. Through the use of the information provided in the latter, I predict that while democracy is possible in China, the state will …

Peeling The Onion: Satire And The Complexity Of Audience Response, Jane Fife

English Faculty Publications

Satire is a popular form of comedic social critique frequently theorized in terms of Kenneth Burke’s comic frame. While its humor and unexpected combination of incongruous elements can reduce tension that surrounds controversial issues to make new perspectives more accessible, audience response to satire can vary tremendously—including the very negative as well as the very positive. Teaching satire should include exposure to rhetorical theory and audience reception analysis to better prepare students as consumers and creators of satires. With a complex, layered pedagogy, satire can be an important component of the twenty-first-century rhetor’s toolkit.
