Landscape Genetics Of The American Badger: Understanding Challenges In Elusive Species, Elizabeth Marie Kierepka
Landscape Genetics Of The American Badger: Understanding Challenges In Elusive Species, Elizabeth Marie Kierepka
Theses and Dissertations
American badgers are one of the most poorly understood carnivores in North America due to their highly elusive, semifossorial lifestyle. To complicate understanding their biology further, badgers possess life history characteristics that predict radically different responses to habitat heterogeneity. In particular, they are considered grassland specialists, so their movement and population viability could be highly dependent on grassland habitats. Badgers are also highly mobile, which suggests they experience high gene flow. Predicting how these life history traits impact gene flow, however, is difficult based on the high diversity in responses to landscape heterogeneity among carnivores. To assess how landscape heterogeneity …
The Development Of An Eye-Tracking Method To Assess Cognitive Flexibility Using A Switching-Task Paradigm, Melissa Lu Pinke
The Development Of An Eye-Tracking Method To Assess Cognitive Flexibility Using A Switching-Task Paradigm, Melissa Lu Pinke
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Cognitive flexibility, a domain of the executive functions, has been demonstrated to influence functional communicative ability, specifically the ability to maintain the topic of conversation, take appropriate conversational turns, self monitor, repair communicative breakdowns, and use of alternative communication modalities. The assessment of cognitive flexibility is essential for the clinical evaluation and treatment of individuals with neurological disorders interfering with communication, however, confounds related to language comprehension and expression impact test validity. This is due to the reliance on verbal and physical response requirements, the understanding of complex linguistic instruction, and concomitant cognitive and physical impairments. Therefore, new methods …
Text Mining Of Patient Demographics And Diagnoses From Psychiatric Assessments, Eric James Klosterman
Text Mining Of Patient Demographics And Diagnoses From Psychiatric Assessments, Eric James Klosterman
Theses and Dissertations
Automatic extraction of patient demographics and psychiatric diagnoses from clinical notes allows for the collection of patient data on a large scale. This data could be used for a variety of research purposes including outcomes studies or developing clinical trials. However, current research has not yet discussed the automatic extraction of demographics and psychiatric diagnoses in detail. The aim of this study is to apply text mining to extract patient demographics - age, gender, marital status, education level, and admission diagnoses from the psychiatric assessments at a mental health hospital and also assign codes to each category. Gender is coded …

Making Water Resource Decisions More "Informationally" Efficient: Development Of A Geospatial Water Rights Decision Support System For Kittitas County, Washington, Michael Pease, Jeremy Murray
International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research
In semi-arid river basins like the Yakima River Basin in central Washington State, United States of America, water demand can exceed available supply on an annual basis. More informed decisions about water supply and current allocation have the potential to improve water management. This research created a geospatial water rights database for the Yakima River Basin. The creation of a publicly available decision support system mapping water rights can provide water managers another tool to help achieve this goal. This paper describes the creation of the Decision Support System. In addition it looks at the current utility of the system, …

Regionalization Of Hydrologic Response In The Great Lakes Basin: Considerations Of Temporal Scales Of Analysis, Jonathan Martin Kult, Lauren M. Fry, Andrew D. Gronewold, Woonsup Choi
Regionalization Of Hydrologic Response In The Great Lakes Basin: Considerations Of Temporal Scales Of Analysis, Jonathan Martin Kult, Lauren M. Fry, Andrew D. Gronewold, Woonsup Choi
Geography Faculty Articles
Methods for predicting streamflow in areas with limited or nonexistent measures of hydrologic response commonly rely on regionalization techniques, where knowledge pertaining to gauged watersheds is transferred to ungauged watersheds. Hydrologic response indices have frequently been employed in contemporary regionalization research related to predictions in ungauged basins. In this study, we developed regionalization models using multiple linear regression and regression tree analysis to derive relationships between hydrologic response and watershed physical characteristics for 163 watersheds in the Great Lakes basin. These models provide an empirical means for simulating runoff in ungauged basins at a monthly time step without implementation of …

Freshwater Springs Preservation In Jejudo: Reinterpretation Of Springs As An Ethnological And Environmental Resource, Chang-Yu Hong
Freshwater Springs Preservation In Jejudo: Reinterpretation Of Springs As An Ethnological And Environmental Resource, Chang-Yu Hong
International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research
On Jeju Island, there are many freshwater springs because it is a volcanic island with abundant precipitation and rainwater. While springs were once plentiful in the island, due to depletion and urbanization pressures, many of the traditional wood and rock structures and spaces surrounding springs have become severely deteriorated. Until the 1970s springs served as vital community resources for water provisioning for drinking and household use, agriculture and livestock. However, after most springs fell into disuse, hydraulic engineers have maintained Jeju’s springs with a concern for springs with strong flow and good water quality but disregarding human activities such as …
