In most education systems, African American Vernacular English is not considered a language or variety of English and students who speak it are coerced into using Standard American English only. Using autoethnographic methodology I examine my personal language navigation and negotiation of Standard American English and the oppression of language and identity that accompanied it. I use storytelling to draw the reader into my childhood memories and the drifting away of my first language. Although Forum Theatre (FT) welcomes diverse perspectives to the stage, practitioners have often remarked that FT performances work best in communities that are in some way “homogeneous.” In this essay, I suggest that homogeneity is a recurrent theme in FT discussions because the structure of FT relies on consensus, and I propose that Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s paradigm of strategic uses of essentialism is a productive tool for understanding and evaluating moments of consensus in FT. Although Spivak eventually critiqued the term, I propose that strategic essentialism can nonetheless provide a useful model for understanding how consensus ideally operates within FT …

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

Image work is a central and integral modality of Theatre of the Oppressed. This article examines liberatory, oppressive, and (at times) neglected aspects of Image work. Starting with the desire to know what the Image is really about, the authors invite the reader into a conversation by asking: why do we use Images, who are the Images for, how are Images experienced, and are they doing what is intended? Recognizing the inherent contradictions of using words alone to engage with Images, the authors employ a combination of text and photographs to facilitate this conversation.

Remembering Obama In The Era Of Trump, Dante Allen Miller

McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Symposium

People think the election of Obama led to post racial America. Our research seeks to understand how collective memory of generations affects political understandings of the election of President Obama and President Trump. Using Bonilla-Silva’s lens of racism without racist and Berlant’s theory of cruel optimism we argue that post racial ideas are optimistic and hinder how individuals remember Americas racial past. Through interviewing Generation X and Millennials we find personal relationships factor into how individuals recall political events more than candidate stances. Decoupling politics from person creates a phenomenon where individuals assume voting does not have social implications.

Factors Influencing Corn Fungicide Treatment Decisions, Alicia Rosburg, Luisa Menapace

Faculty Work

Fungal disease management in U.S. corn production has undergone a major shift in the last 2 decades. The decision to apply fungicide, a management practice that was once rarely considered, is now contemplated annually by many U.S. corn producers. We investigate potential factors underlying the fungicide treatment decision. We use economics, agronomy, and plant pathology literature to develop a conceptual model of the fungicide treatment decision and test the model using a survey of Midwest corn producers. We find the treatment decision is positively related to perceived economic gains, but heuristic factors also have a strong influence.

This project will showcase the work that the student organization, Art for El Salvador has done the past few years in conjunction with the non-profit organization, Art for El Salvador. The organization was brought to UNI by Maria and Niah Howard, both graduates of UNI. A student organization was formed and together the two groups have made and sold art to help provide educational needs to impoverished rural communities in El Salvador. Through the hard work of many people, Art for El Salvador actually provided the resources for a community of Casseria Mediagua to build a new middle school. The …

The UNI Center for Violence Prevention (CVP) collaborates with and supports Iowa’s PreK-12 school districts, colleges and universities, and community agencies who serve youth and families by providing gender violence and bullying prevention training and programming, implementation strategies, on-going practice opportunities and evaluation services. Prevention strategies are delivered within the context of a multi-level and multi-systemic approach so as to maximize buy-in and support from a broad array of school and community stakeholders. Since 2006 the faculty librarians at Rod Library have arranged for and conducted hundreds of research day events for thousands of Iowa public and private school students. These intensive three to six hour research events include: instruction on conducting university-level research, tours of Rod Library and UNI resources, one-on-one research consultations with a faculty librarian, and for those interested in attending UNI, informational sessions with UNI professors and coaches. Thirty-two different area schools have participated in Research Days at Rod Library. Some schools such as Independence High School, Nashua-Plainfield Middle and High Schools, and Dike New Hartford Middle School have …

The Global Reach of UNI’s Community Engagement Activities The community engagement work of the UNI campus is gathered, preserved, and showcased in UNI ScholarWorks, the institutional repository. The Rod Library’s digital scholarship unit coordinates and maintains UNI ScholarWorks. The purpose of the repository is to collect, preserve, and make available the creative and scholarly output from the University of Northern Iowa. Early in the history of the institutional repository, a section on community engagement was developed and modeled after the Community Engagement section found in the University of Massachusetts, Amherst’s repository, which highlighted its community engagement Carnegie classification. Introduction: Two sections of UNI Cornerstone worked with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, and Rod Library to gain a better understanding of food insecurity in the Cedar Valley during the academic year 2016-2017. Students engaged in research related to food insecurity, and presented informative speeches on their topics. Students then completed training at the Food Bank, and they volunteered sorting, delivering, and serving food. Students organized a campus-wide food drive, incentivizing different halls to participate and conducted a campus advocacy campaign on food insecurity. By the end of the semester, the students’ food drive had collected over 150 pounds of …

March is Women’s History Month. Throughout March, Northern Iowa Feminists holds the annual collection drive called the Red Basket Project. Many homeless shelters and food banks lack these important hygiene products for women and families. Our goal is to collect menstrual products for EMBARC and Friends of the Family. The Red Basket Project is our way of giving back to the community. In 2017, we donated over 60 boxes of menstrual products to Cedar Valley Friends of the Family. In 2018, we donated over 1,200 individual products and 54 boxes to EMBARC. We cannot wait to see what 2019 will …

Many colleges and universities have re-embraced the public purpose of higher education. As such, identifying and measuring civic learning outcomes for students as well as evaluating the efficacy of civic engagement programs and teaching strategies are important (Steinberg, Hatcher & Bringle, 2011). The primary purpose of this study is to assess the civic-mindedness in students by comparing students that participate in Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) student association to non –NLA students at a comprehensive Midwestern university. Experience Immigrants Have With Housing In Waterloo, Darlene Fitkin

The purpose of this qualitative empirical research is to examine the experiences immigrants are having with housing in Waterloo, Iowa. Waterloo has a large and growing population of immigrants. It is important to capture immigrants’ experiences, to facilitate acclamation with their new environment. Going through IBR and following their guidelines, a list of 10 open ended questions was used as a tool to interview four homebased Head Start workers. Each recorded interview was approximately one-hour long. After transcription, dedoose program was used to develop themes.
