What A Business Librarian Learned From The Health Sciences: Adapting The Pico Framework To Inform Library Instruction For Marketing Students, Jim Kelly

Problem/Need: How can I make a one-shot library instruction session for an undergraduate marketing research course more relevant and more interesting for the students and the librarian?

Solution: Draw on the techniques used by health sciences librarians (PICO, etc.), but reverse the PICO approach in order to create multidimensional scenarios to use when demonstrating library resources for these marketing research students.

What’S In A Name? Measuring Potential Influence Of Medical Cannabis Labels On Attitudes Towards Its Use, Dylan Pieper

In this study, I hypothesize that participants who read a vignette summarizing a scientific article on using cannabis to treat cancer pain will report significantly different approval of the treatment if they are randomly assigned to see either the label marijuana, cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or nabiximols (a pharmaceutical cannabis derivative). Specifically, I predict that participants will report significantly lower approval when reading marijuana compared to nabiximols. I also hypothesize that reported stigma will mediate the relationship between the noun condition and reported approval and that reported political orientation will mediate the relationship between noun condition and reported stigma. Individuals’ perspectives and stances on an issue will often cause them to perceive information in a way that agrees with their beliefs. Biased assimilation refers to individuals’ tendencies to perceive information consistent with their beliefs as more positive than information inconsistent with their beliefs. It is related to the hostile media effect, which refers to individuals’ tendencies to view balanced news coverage as biased against their stance. Both Liberals and Conservatives tend to show these biases by perceiving some news coverage as biased. In this study, 250 participants will read a news article about a recent bill that was passed. …

Perceptions Of Microaggressions And Consequences Differ By Political Orientation, Christina Fortuna, Jordan Newburg, Bre Kirpes

Microaggressions are subtle forms of discriminatory behavior. Women are more likely than men to perceive gender microaggressions (Basford, Offermann, & Behrend, 2014), and political orientation can affect perceptions of microaggressions (Harper, 2018). In this study, we hypothesized that politically liberal women would perceive discriminatory behavior and anticipate negative outcomes for another woman more than politically conservative women, especially when microaggressions were subtler. In a pre-registered experiment, 248 female participants read one of four workplace interaction vignettes depicting microassault, microinsult, microinvalidation, or no microaggression (Basford et al., 2014). The Relation Between Disordered Eating, Stress, And Anxiety In First-Year College Women [Poster], Jenna K. Anderson

Research has shown that there is an increase in rates of stress and disordered eating for students transitioning to college. The current study examined this connection by determining the relation between disordered eating, stress, and anxiety in first-year college women. To this end, 99 college-enrolled women completed paper-and-pencil surveys in a psychology lab, such as the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21) and the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q). According to the results, the DASS-21 stress sum was significantly correlated with the EDE-Q total disordered eating sum (r(92) =.330, p = .001), but the DASS-21 anxiety sum was not (r(92) …

With the world’s older adult population expanding rapidly, it is important to understand how decision-making abilities change across the lifespan. The objective of this research is to study the effects of age, numeracy, and mental fatigue when faced with a consumer or gamble choice situation, in which many options are available (hyperchoice). Due to the development of technology, the scenario of hyperchoice is common. While people have more options to choose from, they may also feel overwhelmed. A total of 114 older adults and 112 younger adults were surveyed. Results of this study indicate that too many options may deteriorate …

Prehistoric Plant Resources In The Cedar Valley: How Prehistoric People Utilized Flora In Subsistence Practices, Lyn Tackett

Over the last 10,000 years, the Cedar Valley in northeastern Iowa has seen an influx of plants and people; both of which have impacted the native flora of the region. Prairie grasses, wetlands, and other natural features of the Iowa landscape have been altered to accommodate the use of the land by humans. Some of the clues to what attracted various cultures to this region are hidden within the native flora. Therefore, a comparative study of the Cedar Valley area was done to determine what plants were available to Prehistoric native people when they came to the Cedar Valley. After …

"It's Important To Just Have Your Voice Heard": Young Voters Changing Perceptions Of Political Efficacy [Poster], Christopher Matthew Merck

Youth voter turnout in Iowa spiked in the 2018 midterm election. This paper attempts to figure out why. By replicating a 2004 study examining the voting behavior of young Iowans during the 2002 midterms, my study identified significant shifts in how young voters think and communicate about voting. After conducting 37 open-ended interviews with 18-24-year-olds, I found that although young people identified many of the same concerns in 2018 as they had in 2002, they were far more likely to vote. Respondents were more likely to identify the consummatory effects of voting, which in turn led to an increase in …

Valuation Multiples: Identifying Undervalued Stocks From 1987 To 2017, Luke Muller

Major Themes in Economics

This research reports the absolute returns and alpha generated by hypothetical portfolios arranged by six commonly used valuation multiples from 1987 to 2017. I find the best returns are offered by the Sales/TEV multiple while the FCF/TEV multiple generates the most Fama-French Three-Factor alpha. My results contradict two prior claims by Fama and French: 1. any valuation multiple is as good as another and 2. book value-to-market value is the preferred measure for identifying undervalued companies. I also examine the performance of each valuation multiple for small, mid, and large-cap companies and find that smaller stocks offer greater investment returns …

Non-Linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model Approach And The J-Curve Phenomenon: China And Her Major Trading Partners, Alex Hunter

Following Bahmani-Oskooee and Fariditavana (2016), I use the non-linear autoregressive distributed lag model approach of Shin et al. (2013) to examine the J-curve phenomenon for the Chinese economy. Most recent studies have used methods such as the linear autoregressive distributed lag model approach of Pesaran et al. (2001) which assumes a linear relationship between the exchange rate and the trade balance. I argue that lack of support for the J-curve effect could be due to assuming that effects of exchange rate changes are symmetric. The Effects Of Relative Wages And Border Enforcement On Illegal Immigration, Aaron Iehl

The flow of illegal immigrants into the United States cannot be accurately measured because any successful illegal immigrations will not be detected. This paper uses an apprehensions function developed by Hanson and Spilimbergo (1999) to estimate a lower bound for illegal immigration. An OLS regression model is employed to examine the effect of relative wages and border enforcement on the number of apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border from 1999-2017. These results are compared with findings from Hanson and Spilimbergo (1999) who studied apprehensions from 1976-1995.

Determinants Of Box Office Performance: Return Of The Regressions, Griffin Scott

Brewer, Kelley, and Jozefowicz (2009) used data from the late 1990s to the early 2000’s in order to determine what made a movie a success at the box office. I replicate their study using data from 2014 to 2018. Ex ante, production budget, critical reviews, horror and comedy movies were all significant at the one percent level. Ex post, the same variables plus number of screens, summer and holiday release, star power, and word-of-mouth were significant at the one percent level.
