Throughout the nat1on there is a rapid increase in college and university enrollments. With this ever-increasing enrollment high school students find it necessary to make earlier decisions concerning their future. Such decisions usually bring forth the question, "Will I be able to succeed in college?" Such a question places much responsibility upon the high school counselor to provide students, as well as parents, with objective information concerning this transition from high school to college. Therefore, high school counselors are in need of more valid methods of making recommendations as to possible success in colleges and universities.

The primary purpose of this study was to analyze academic preparations in relation to actual teaching assignments of social studies teachers in public, accredited Iowa high schools f or the school year 1962-63. A secondary purpose was to survey social studies high school programs. Class schedules from a number of high schools were examined and analyzed as well as daily teaching programs and major and minor preparations of social science teachers in public secondary schools in Iowa.

The word kleindeutsch, as it will be used in this investigation, means the territory which comprised Germany in the year 1871 plus the spirit behind the movement to make Germany a state for "pure" Germans. The term grossdeutsch, as it will be used in this investigation, means the territory which comprised Germany in 1871 plus Austria and the spirit behind the movement for one large federal government which might include some non-German people.
